the brown and white all the lehigh news first vol 109 no 25 jbriday january 25 2002 new housing option for lottery by jasmine foreman news writer lehigh's new residence hall campus square is expected to be the most popular living option during this year's housing lottery associate director of residential services ozzie breiner said the building will be completed and ready for students to move in next semester the residence hall will consist of four buildings and add 250 bed spaces to on-campus living but the complex won't only include housing breiner said also included in the campus square project is the moving of the bookstore into the ground level of building c and the ground level of building b will be used as a retail space breiner said we're not sure yet what will be there possibly a coffee or ice cream shop campus square is for upper classmen and will embody the same concept as sayre park breiner said there are 50 four-bedroom apartments 12 three-bedroom apartments and 7 two-bedroom apartments all bedrooms are single occupancy each apart ment will have a bathroom living area and full kitchen we are hoping that the 250 additional spaces in campus square will bring people from off campus back to the campus breiner said jennamarie devito 05 said she hopes to get in campus square i want to live in campus square because it seems like it's going to be really nice devito said i'll have my own room and the girls i want to live with are really great housing is only guaranteed to freshmen and sophomores last year a little more than 1,000 stu dents registered for the lottery and almost 200 of the juniors and seniors who registered had to be waitlisted breiner said breiner said campus square will help decrease the amount of waitlisted students we are hoping that with so many additional spaces in the system we will be able to guar antee housing for nearly every one who registers breiner said students who signed bids with greek houses are illegible for the lottery although campus square is the most popular choice among students there are other residence halls that will need to be filled on-campus housing includes sayre and trembley parks warren square brodhead drinker and richards houses oheneba afriyie 05 is hoping to get a good pick in the lottery b&wphoto by autumn cruz afriyie said i'm just trying to live someplace nice like sayre it seems nice and cozy residential services hopes that the new campus square apartments will bring students back onto campus exhibit leaving zoellner by nur-e rahman news writer dance on paper drawings marks and notations is on display until sun feb 3 in the main gallery of zoellner arts center sketches drawings and pho tographs by artists such as arnie zane douglas dunn pooh kaye melissa fenley and doug t jones are being dis played the artists are choreogra phers with an understanding of the connection between visual and performing arts ricardo viera director of lehigh's art galleries is interest ed in the movement of traffic through space you really have to think about what color this exhibit is viera said we used color to direct the eye because a lot of these pieces aren't really col orful but there are hints of color bursts of color the whole approach the concept and more than that - it's about the feeling viera said that in working closely with james carroll coor dinator of the new arts program in kutztown pa the conception and creation of this exhibition was a careful collec tion and re-creation of the visual marks or notations made by more than 50 choreographers and consultation residences during the past 27 years with more than two years of research and preparation and significant contributions from the new arts program owner of all the pieces in the exhibition viera was able to contact many artists and collect visual repre sentations of their performance arts throughout the years they the new arts program have been collecting works viera said choreographers are little understood i saw the idea and looked at the pieces i decided to call it dance on paper because when you look carefully at it that's what it is viera said according to viera the mission of the art gallery is visual literacy he says this exhibit has allowed many people to realize and witness the connection between the performing arts and the thought process of the artists first-hand which then can be interpreted as visual art some of the pieces at the exhibition are samples from notebooks that artists and choreographers had left behind at the new arts program where they were all educated and trained at one point in their careers viera said the new arts program is a museum without walls a place of education cre ation and training the artists featured in this exhibit were all involved with the new arts program in the beginning of their careers many of the pieces on exhibit are rep resentations of their sense of movement and feeling associat ed with dance and stage viera designed a booklet to accompany the exhibition copies can be picked up at the gallery the catalog dance on yoshida announces new award by usa schulter news writer provost ron yoshida announced the arrival of the hillman award for excellence in undergraduate student advising at the student senate meetingjan 15th the award will honor a faculty member who has made a considerable impact in a student's undergraduate career the award will recognize exemplary student advising this is defined as either guiding students through their exploration and pursuit of an academic course of study or assisting students in the devel opment and/or completion of research related to their degree program we want to recognize someone who doesn't just keep office hours but really goes out see exhibit page 4 see award page 4 photo courtesy of media relations starting power forward scott taylor is intense about basketball and his studies see page 20 sports 17-20 coach whitehead 20 wrestling feature 20 advertising executive speaks to business students about interactive marketing see page 4 news 1-4 world news briefs 2 advertising lecture 3 tighter security and regulations change flying see page 5 lifestyles 5-11 in tune 6 look who's talking 9 face in the crowd 11 quick fact america's first minimum wage was 25 back in 1938 source:http://www.uselessknowl edge.com
