news writer and greg meyer news editor monologist josh kornbluth performed ben franklin unplugged to a full house this weekend at zoellner art center's diamond theater kornbluth relates his experi ences trying to create a mono logue about ben franklin he takes his audience on a journey through his thought process starting with the realization that he looks like the famous found ing father using only a handful of props including a desk research books and boxes kornbluth managed to engage the audi ence in waves of laughter and moments of emotional connec tion the initial realization that kornbluth does indeed resem b&wphoto by autumn cruz ble franklin is only reinforced and heightened as the show pro gresses kornbluth explains his trans formation from being an admirer of the beloved chubby and iconic forefather to despis ing him for his perceived poor relations with his son william to arriving at a point where he was able to admire ben franklin for the numbers representing this year's graduating class have been unveiled outside the u.c the senior class is raising money for a class gift and the sept 11 scholarship fund funds raised for research by william brobston news writer the 12th annual good scholar election for cancer research will open sunday with the cancer research mile walk there are 47 campus organi zations participating in this year's election most fraternities and sororities are participating as well as many honor societies and clubs candidates from each organization will work to receive as many donations as they can the event is being organized for the second year by theta delta chi fraternity last year the campaign raised 62,000 jason allen 02 philanthropy chairman of theta delta chi is not concerned that donations may be lower this year because of the focus on funds for sept 11 victims it seems that people are in a giving mood allen said so maybe we will receive more than expected we would like to raise 70,000 this year but we will be happy with whatever we raise aside from the mile walk two candidates days will be held nov 8 and nov 14 during which candidates will stand on designat ed corners to collect donations voting booths will be open monday through next friday and nov 12-16 in the university center from 11 a.m to 1 p.m and in the ulrich student center and rauch business center from 2 p.m to 4 p.m allen explained that the winners are chosen for raising the most money not for winning an actual election this is basically an election that you can buy allen said the awards ceremony will be held nov 26 at 7 p.m in neville 2 auditorium the first place winner will receive two airplane tickets to anywhere in the united states along with 1,000 for his or her organization the second place winner will receive dinner for four at the inn of the falcon and 500 for his or her organiza tion the third place winner will get a pair of gift certificates to the bookstore and bethlehem sporting goods and 250 for his or her organization in addition all candidates will receive a per sonal gift for their participation dr alvin cohen professor emeritus in the department of economics is the treasurer for the election i am very firmly convinced that young people have to learn at a fairly early age the impor tance of giving back to the society in which they live cohen said since the campaign began in 1990 it has raised 293,800 for cancer research female engineer speaks by usa schulter lifestyle writer influential engineer ginger evans told a packard auditorium audience monday that she feels obligated to give young people background information before they enter the work force because she does not believe college fully prepares students for the real world evans the first woman to win the man of engineering award was brought to lehigh by forward for the organization and recognition of women's advancement rights and development and the women's center evans said she struggled her freshman year at colorado state university where she obtained a bachelor's degree in civil engi neering it took hard work and determination for her to raise her grades and move on to receive a master's degree in hydraulics evans said the hardest thing she had to overcome in her quest for success was how to be more assertive i was raised a good girl evans said i was taught to be accommodating and to not think of myself first evans also had to learn how to negotiate a skill she attribut es to nothing but experience evans touched on three areas in her speech business sexual harassment and balancing family and career evans urged students to learn the business aspects of their career choice whether it be engineering or theater she recalled her peers fathers knowing so much more about engineering because they understood business i never thought i'd have to worry about it business - i focused on being a good engi neer evans said though she's never had the desire to start her own business she said she encourages stu dents to consider the option anyway for it will help them to make more informed decisions about their futures another option evans strong ly encouraged is graduate school she said it will not affect
