the library ac cording to garth a howland as sistant professor of fine arts professor and mrs macmahon collected the paintings now on ex hibition at the library professor macmahon will use his experiences in efirope last summer as a back ground for his talk the professor and his wife are co-chairmen of the exhibition committee of the col lege arts association which is sponsoring the present follows club concert pi delta epsilon's third annual gridiron banquet will be held some time in april it was decided in a meeting held last wednesday ac cording to ralph c benson pres ident of the society for the past two years pi delta epsilon national journalistic hon orary fraternity has conducted these banquets at which prominent le high men and campus activities are satirized and roasted on the grid iron lajst year asa packer personated by one of the members of the so ciety was brought from the grave to behold burlesques of present day occurrences on the campus some of the skits included no beer rushing at registration house par ty and freshman regulations this year's banquet will be held along the same lines although the theme might be different benson also stated that the invitations which are usually sent to faculty and out standing students are considered quite an honor the annual gridiron banquet in augurated on april 3 1930 is mod eled after that sponsored by the washington press correspondents club to which presidents of the united states are invited that the autogiro will make it much simpler for the common man to do his own flying was the predic tion of richard w wetherill ex ecutive secretary of the autogiro company of america at a meeting of the industrial engineering so ciety wednesday evening in pack ard auditorium mr wetherill emphasized the fact that the element of safety has been the essential feature in the de velopment of the autogiro no injuries requiring hospital treatment except a minor injury in curred by a pilot during an exper imental flight have been reported since the earliest stages in the de relopment of the autogiro an in teresting feature of the autogiro is that no matter what position it is in the ship can be righted by sim ply releasing all the controls the speaker stated explains mechanism mr wetherill explained the me chanical features of the autogiro especially emphasizing the fact that the horizontal blades shortly the sophomore council at its meeting last friday in drown hall vofed unanimously in favor of a petition to arcadia for discontinu ing freshman regulations for the rest of the semester according to a statement by l.h robbins secretary of the sopho more class the council is also mak ing the suggestion that starting next year the only regulations for freshmen will be the wearing of a dink and black tie for one semester after mid-year examinations next year no requirements whatever will be in force if the petition is ac cepted arcadia to meet feb 29 definite action will be taken at american institute of mining and metallurgical en gineers held feb 15-17 in hotel commodore new york according to howard eckfeldt professor of mining engineering the institute was opened with a dinner in the hotel and a stage show was put on for the enjoyment of the visiting representatives after the opening festivities the delegates split up into various groups and had discussions on their specialized subjects lehigh was represented by pro fessor eckfeldt dr benjamin l miller professor of geology allison butts associate professor of metal lurgy bradley s stoughton pro fessor of metallurgical engineering dr maurice ewing instructor in physics and several students from the mining and metallurgical de partments ventilating fan displayed professor eckfeldt was a mem ber of the committee on a new code for mine ventilation during the dis cussion a new type of ventilating fan was introduced this new pro peller type of fan which is used at moose shaft in butte montana has a capacity of 250,000 cubic feet of air per minute with a water gauge pressure of 9 inches the former fans with a diameter of 8 feet com pared to the 6 foot diameter of the propeller fan had a capacity
