the brown and white vol 109 no 9 lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 tuesday october 2 2001 all the lehigh news first cuban ambassador discusses ideas by autumn cruz photo editor the situation in cuba has been por trayed with a negative bias from the united states media according to united nations ambassador to cuba orlando requeijo six lehigh students traveled to the cuban mission in new york city friday to meet and talk with requeijo requeijo said he believes the american press only reports the bad news about cuba that does not reflect the reality of the situa tion after providing the group with a brief historical background of the relationship between the united states and cuba requeijo gave examples of positive things cuba has done since fidel castro came into leadership in 1959 requeijo said cuba offered humanitarian aid to help the united states after the recent terrorist attacks but has not heard a reply from u.s authorities yet not even a thank you requeijo said he said it goes unrecognized that cuba is treating free of charge 15,000 victims b&wphoto by autumn cruz orlando requeijo united nations ambassador of cuba speaks with the group that visited the cuban mission in new york city friday car wash raises 800 by randi greenberg all profits to help victims of sept 11 terrorist attacks news writer alpha chi omega sorority and kappa alpha fraternity joined forces friday in a car wash that raised 800 for the terrorist attack relief fund ka brother eric kronenberger 03 came up with the idea last week i was listening to the radio and they were talking about dif ferent ways to help out kronenberger said a chi o president sarah wichryk 03 and kronenberger organized the event held in ka's parking lot hoping that both stu dents and faculty would drive their cars up on the hill to benefit the cause flyers were posted around campus informing students and faculty of this fund-raising event a lot of people close to us were affected by this tragedy and we all wanted to do some thing to help a chi o member bari goldman 04 said all proceeds from the car wash will go to the red cross relief effort to help those who directly suffered from the world trade center terrorist attack each driver is estimated to donate a 5 minimum and we are expecting to raise a lot of money sarah friedman 04 said before the event adam plotch 05 drove his car to the ka parking lot i think this was a great idea to help benefit people who suf fered due to such a tragedy plotch said i'm glad i can do a small part to alleviate the suffer ing in addition to the students washing cars other fraternity and sorority members stood in the street outside ka and asked cars driving by for donations to boost the spirits of those around ka brother andrew rothstein 04 dressed up in a b&wphoto by megan wallace cow costume and chugged a glass of milk each time a car donated money michael bergen 03 was a little disappointed by the turnout everyone on campus talked about how they were going to help and then we actually gave them a chance to do something and not that many people came bergen said adam sporn 02 a brother in ka said he was still pleased with the results even though we were hoping to make more money a lot of people showed up sporn said i think it turned out well members of alpha chi omega sorority and kappa alpha fraternity wash cars to raise money for victims of terrorist attacks sept 11 scholarship fund established by jasmine foreman news writer president farrington intro duced the creation of the sept 11 scholarship fund in an e mail sent to the campus com munity sept 25 this is a permanently endowed fund set up to help support those in the lehigh community whose financial sit uations have been affected by the terrorist attacks in new york and washington d.c support comes in many forms farrington said in the e-mail one of course is emotional and we've seen an extraordinary outpouring of compassion and concern through the efforts of our faculty staff and students who have been reaching out to each other in a multitude of ways in the wake of the recent national tragedy in addition to emotional support some people at lehigh are going to need financial support see f.und page 6 see cuba page 4 i ... <» ™ football team defeats central connecticut state university 58-10 see page 20 sports 15,17-20 crosscountry 15 volleyball 17 men's soccer 19 traveling theater company presents shakespeare's the tempest see page 3 news 1-6 college news briefs 2 cd signing 3 bethlehem briefs 6 less companies attend this year's career fair see page 9 business 9-11 stocks 9 business briefs 9 look who's investing 11 hallmark makes cards for 105 different relationships source:http://www.uselessfacts.net
