the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 109 no 6 friday september 21 2001 ah the lehigh news first fall victim released recovering by amanda macmillan news writer a student who sustained a fall off of a fraternity house balcony sept 8 has been released from the hospital and is now in a rehabilitation center according to vice provost for student affairs john smeaton brothers of phi delta theta fraternity and university police are still refusing to comment about the incident the student who lives in an off campus residence was injured after falling about 30 feet off of phi delt's porch the incident occurred while the fraternity was having an unregistered party university police were called to the scene and an ambulance transported the student to the hospital he spent four days in the intensive care unit the student was then trans ferred to a rehabilitation facility to begin his recovery smeaton said although his injuries will likely require four to six more weeks of recovery the student has been making good progress university police are still working on the investigation but will not comment it is not appropriate for me to give away any of the informa tion we have until the investiga tion is closed and the formal report is available said chief of police ed shupp phi delt brother elliot noon 04 said that for insurance and privacy reasons the fraternity members have all been instruct ed to not talk to anyone about the situation a campus-wide email sent wednesday by smeaton con cluded by saying that the student's family is appreciative of everyone's concern smeaton said that before attention shifted to the terrorist attacks on new york and washington sept 11 many students had been inquiring about the status of the injured student b&wphoto by autumn cruz the student fell approximately 30 feet off phi delt's balcony internet access improves by amanda macmillan news writer a new e-mail server and an increase in memory are among the improvements made to lehigh's internet access this year during the first week of classes many professors had their students log into the course information web site to demonstrate how it works this overflow of usage was unex pected and too much for the system to handle according to bruce taggart vice provost for information resources roy gruver ir director of technical services agrees the volume caused the server to fully utilize the avail able system memory -
