the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 109 no 4 friday september 14 2001 all the lehigh news first terrorist acts stun community nation b&wphoto by autumn cruz tragic news creates grim atmosphere by amy cohen news editor the campus was in a state of shock all day tuesday after hearing of the event that took place in new york and washington after leaving classes in the rauch business center tuesday morning students encountered groups standing around the tele visions in the lobby trying to figure out what was going on other students who were walking on campus stopped in the gym to listen to the radio in an attempt to hear what had happened people cried in worry and disbelief as they found out what was happening and attempted to reach their friends and family classes were cancelled by president farrington at 11 a.m faculty staff work to give support by amy cohen news editor while many students were trying to deal with the tragedies of tuesday's events they didn't have to deal with the problems on their own lehigh set up support ser vices for students from 5 p.m tuesday through 7 a.m wednesday staff were avail able in the university center and the ulrich student center many students visited ulrich to watch the televisions set up there and to talk with the staff members and other students present jennifer lichty assistant director of the alumni associa tion volunteered at ulrich from 7-9 p.m tuesday and 5-7 a.m wednesday it's important that people are here if we are needed ir professors answer questions by nora linscheid assistant news editor international relations profes sors discussed the ramifications of the terrorist attacks on the world trade center and the pentagon in a session wednesday at taylor college the purpose of the session which was led by international relations professors henri barkey rajan menon and chaim kaufmann was to give students a chance to talk to experts and have questions answered said doug haugen residence life coordina tor at taylor college the focus of the discussion was on the aftermath of the tragedy and the actions that the u.s government will be taking in retaliation menon however warned against acting too quickly against a certain group there is enormous anger not only in new york city but also around the world menon said the problem is finding who did this if we unleashed a missile barage against some body the number of people who died who had nothing to do with this would be very high and we might not even get the ones who are responsible barkey also pointed out the difficulty of dealing with terror ist groups the major problem in dealing with a terrorist organization is that they are not threatened by normal measures barkey said when you have people who are willing to die for their cause how are you going to deter them kaufmann suggested a policy of deterrence by defense if you make your security better the terrorists won't have success and will lose interest but barkey pointed out that as the united states has become more sophisticated the terrorists have also become more sophisticated knowing that they have learned to communicate without any ways that we can detect he b&wphoto by autumn cruz said what happened tuesday was a low tech operation but what was high tech about it was that we picked up nothing students gathered outside taylor college to listen to international relations professors explain tuesday's events see help page 5 see tragedy page 5 see questions page 5 lehigh students and brown and white editors reflect on their feelings of the attacks see pages 14-17 professional sports cancelled in the aftermath of tragedy see page 20 sports 18-20 sports briefs 19 effects on mlb 20 community service activities planned to aid victims see page 3 news 1-5 event timeline 2 church services 3 smeaton's reaction 4 lehigh students react to tuesday's tragedies see page 7 lifestyle 7-13 look who's talking 10 events guide 13 qgfi each of the twin towers had 104 passenger elevators and 21,800 windows source:http://www.cnn.com
