gathering of 100 attends banquet given by n.y club the wrestling law which was passed in 1923 is unfortunate for intercollegiate comeptition and we are doing all we can to have it re pealed or modified said dr neil carothers director of the business college at the meeting of the n y lehigh alumni club in new york last tuesday evening many matches will be taken out of the state as a result of this law con tinued dr carothers the meeting was held at the railroad club hudson terminal building and was attended by over 100 enthusiastic alumni we have gone before the attor ney general of the state of pennsyl vania and we will know saturday whether the law is unconstitutional or not a l edwards deputy general of the state says that there is hope of modification according to dr carothers carothers cites marks academic conditions have never been so good as they are at the present time at lehigh said dr carothers the men who gradu ate from lehigh to-day are able to hold their own among gradu ates of other schools he stated since the complete reorganiza tion of sports at lehigh in 1925 which abolished the subsidizing of sports we have been paid large dividends dr carothers stated these dividends have not been in gate receipts but in dividends of honor wholesomeness and fair play it has brought about a feeling of sane clean and manly sportsman ship the deficit that was shown in sports this year is a minor problem there have been deficites of from 1,000 to 7,000 in the past the alumni and trustees have absorbed these debts in the past but they cannot be expected to do this all the time according to dr caro thers reports on deficit the three ways of doing away with this deficit to abolish fresh men sports abolishment of a num ber of major sports or raising the athletic fee 5 will not have to be resorted to the present plan is to put all sports on a strictly econ omical basis it is believed that this plan will prove sufficient dr carothers stated if the state board of athletics finds that the wrestling law is con stitutional all the schools and col leges in the state will send a peti tion to the state assembly to ask for it's repeal if this has no effect we will have to get along as best we can continued dr caro thers billy sheridan dean of wrest ling coaches said lehigh stands high in the sport of wrestling and will come out on top if the faculty does not put the strength of the team on probation at the end of this semester the navy meet is the most important meet this sea son bishop will be put in the 155 lb class instead of the 145 lb class to bethlehem prof tomlinson fort head of the mathematics depart ment delivered a brief eulogy in commemoration of general lee both lehigh professors had the highest respect for the southern general flower of the south was what professor . fort called him while professor harmon stated that lee was probably the greatest military genius that the anglo-saxon race has produced he was one of the greatest military commanders in the history of the world even though he lost in a bitter struggle educational advance rapid professor harmon told of the souths rapid rise in educational methods especially in the past twenty years throughout his talk he linked general lee as an im portant contributor to this great advancement the true test of a man's great ness appears either in victory or in adversity said the speaker during the remaining five years of lee's life after his surrender he never complained never dis heartened others never quarreled with the doom of fortune professor harmon said that dur ing the days of reconstruction in the south education had retro gressed he stated that in these times 20 years of advancement in education were lost to the south . he continued that it was not until after the public schools had again been given into the hands of south erners that progress was made and thaf ever since this progress has been steady and continual after the south had its own educational plans it endeavored to establish two efficient systems one for the whites and one for the negroes when it was impossible with reduced taxation to support one therefore both systems were necessarily inadequate said mr harmon ¦ decadent period cited the lecturer fully described this decadent period and then told of the latter part of the nineteenth cen tury education which was domin ated by academies and private schools he said that the twentieth century thus far has been the age of colleges with drastic educational reforms speaking of negro education professor harmon continued ne gro schools have improved more slowly than white schools this may be partially accounted for by the lack of funds and because of the indifferent attitude of some ne groes the speaker added that there are some outstanding institutions of the south institutions that will bear a favorable comparison with any universities in the country there are others that have made and are making an honest effort to raise their standards without a great deal of success stated professor harmon sigma chi will hold dance sigma chi will hold a closed dance on the evening of feb 5 from 9 p m to 1 a gathering of 100 attends banquet given by n.y club the wrestling law which was passed in 1923 is unfortunate for intercollegiate comeptition and we are doing all we can to have it re pealed or modified said dr neil carothers director of the business college at the meeting of the n y lehigh alumni club in new york last tuesday evening many matches will be taken out of the state as a result of this law con tinued dr carothers the meeting was held at the railroad club hudson terminal building and was attended by over 100 enthusiastic alumni we have gone before the attor ney general of the state of pennsyl vania and we will know saturday whether the law is unconstitutional or not a l edwards deputy general of the state says that there is hope of modification according to dr carothers carothers cites marks academic conditions have never been so good as they are at the present time at lehigh said dr carothers the men who gradu ate from lehigh to-day are able to hold their own among gradu ates of other schools he stated since the complete reorganiza tion of sports at lehigh in 1925 which abolished the subsidizing of sports we have been paid large dividends dr carothers stated these dividends have not been in gate receipts but in dividends of honor wholesomeness and fair play it has brought about a feeling of sane clean and manly sportsman ship the deficit that was shown in sports this year is a minor problem there have been deficites of from 1,000 to 7,000 in the past the alumni and trustees have absorbed these debts in the past but they cannot be expected to do this all the time according to dr caro thers reports on deficit the three ways of doing away with this deficit to abolish fresh men sports abolishment of a num ber of major sports or raising the athletic fee 5 will not have to be resorted to the present plan is to put all sports on a strictly econ omical basis it is believed that this plan will prove sufficient dr carothers stated if the state board of athletics finds that the wrestling law is con stitutional all the schools and col leges in the state will send a peti tion to the state assembly to ask for it's repeal if this has no effect we will have to get along as best we can continued dr caro thers billy sheridan dean of wrest ling coaches said lehigh stands high in the sport of wrestling and will come out on top if the faculty does not bethlehem prof tomlinson fort head of the mathematics depart ment delivered a brief eulogy in commemoration of general lee both lehigh professors had the highest respect for the southern general flower of the south was what professor . fort called him while professor harmon stated that lee was probably the greatest military genius that the anglo-saxon race has produced he was one of the greatest military commanders in the history of the world even though he lost in a bitter struggle educational advance rapid professor harmon told of the souths rapid rise in educational methods especially in the past twenty years throughout his talk he linked general lee as an im portant contributor to this great advancement the true test of a man's great ness appears either in victory or in adversity said the speaker during the remaining five years of lee's life after his surrender he never complained never dis heartened others never quarreled with the doom of fortune professor harmon said that dur ing the days of reconstruction in the south education had retro gressed he stated that in these times 20 years of advancement in education were lost to the south . he continued that it was not until after the public schools had again been given into the hands of south erners that progress was made and thaf ever since this progress has been steady and continual after the south had its own educational plans it endeavored to establish two efficient systems one for the whites and one for the negroes when it was impossible with reduced taxation to support one therefore both systems were necessarily inadequate said mr harmon ¦ decadent period cited the lecturer fully described this decadent period and then told of the latter part of the nineteenth cen tury education which was domin ated by academies and private schools he said that the twentieth century thus far has been the age of colleges with drastic educational reforms speaking of negro education professor harmon continued ne gro schools have improved more slowly than white schools this may be partially accounted for by the lack of funds and because of the indifferent attitude of some ne groes the speaker added that there are some outstanding institutions of the south institutions that will bear a favorable comparison with any universities in the country there are others that have made and are making an honest effort to raise their standards without a great deal of success stated professor harmon sigma chi will hold dance sigma chi will hold a closed dance on the evening of feb 5 from 9 p m to 1 a
