the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 109 no 1 tuesday september 4 2001 all the lehigh news first sororities meet freshmen by caitlin cantor assistant news editor women interested in greek life had a chance to meet sorority members in a relaxed environ ment sunday at the panhellenic council's bagel brunch the bagel brunch was intend ed to make sorority rush less intimidating by allowing the women to get to know the soror ity members without feeling pres sured to join a specific house none of the sisters displayed greek letters and they only told the women what house they were in if they were specifically asked this way first-year female stu dents were given the opportunity to get a general feeling about those involved in greek life rather than a specific house the rush chairs and up to 10 women from each house attend ed the brunch house members tried to answer questions the women had about rush and greek life this is a chance for us to break the ice with the girls who are interested amber grant 03 a member of kappa alpha theta said we want the girls to feel comfortable with us and to make spring rush less scary b&wphoto by autumn cruz heather browne 02 panhel's recruitment chair helped orga nize the event we want to promote greek life as a whole and show the girls who are interested in rushing but have reservations about it who and what it involves browne said we want to eliminate the myths and stereotypes of sororities women came to the brunch with their rush counselors or rho chi's browne said she was pleased with the turnout the brunch was advertised through flyers gryphons and the welcome week schedule carol crewdson 05 lauren chanatry 05 and lauren lamascia 05 eat bagels and socialize at the panhellenic council's bagel brunch on the u.c front lawn sunday welcome week offers activities for new students by nora linscheid assistant news editor for many upperclassmen the trip back to lehigh brings excite ment for upcoming classes parties and reunions with friends after a three-month summer vacation students are often ready to leave home behind and enjoy the luxury of their independence but the end of the summer experience is often much differ ent for freshmen as they embark on their new freedom and leave behind their families friends and home lives to help familiarize first-year students with lehigh the dean of students office along with many campus clubs and organi zations held a series of events and activities for welcome week the activities which lasted from aug 24 through sunday included events such as casino night a hypnotist karaoke a drive-in movie volleyball and a barbecue panhellenic council's bagel brunch and a marshmal low roast evan ehalt 05 enjoyed casino night which was spon sored by the residence hall association casino night gave us the chance to win prizes and have a lot of fun ehalt said alexander curtis 05 thought the hypnotist was funny but could have finished sooner he sort of went on too long curtis said garage to ease parking shortage by amy cohen news editor there are many changes in parking services this semester with the largest being the addi tion of more than 200 spaces for faculty and students in the new parking garage on morton street the garage which is not yet fully finished will contain staff parking residence hall parking and metered parking spots according to pat mitchell manager of parking services the garage will have two gates upon completion the first will come from asa drive and lead to the second level of the garage and the second gate will be one and a half levels from the top of the garage mitchell is hoping the project will be completed within the next few weeks there are 123 spots open in the upper level of the garage for stu dents living in brodhead house these students will receive special access cards so they will be the only people able to park in the upper level next year the area will be b&w photo by autumn cruz the new parking garage on morton street will help to alleviate parking shortages on campus once it is finished see parking page 5 see welcome page 5 football defeats georgetown 41-14 see page 20 sports 15-20 women's volleyball 17 sports briefs 19 men's soccer 20 gardiner replaces hunter as dean of admissions and financial aid see page 4 news 1-6 college news briefs 2 exclusion stickers 3 bethlehem briefs 6 tough times what can students expect from the economy see page 9 business 9-11 business briefs 9 mcdonald's scam 10 look who's investing 11 forty percent of mcdonald's profits come from the sale of happy meals source:http://www.uselessfacts.net
