new methods of using and manufacturing elec trical distribution apparatus would tend to increase the serviceability and decrease the cost of transmis sion lines was emphasized by d.k blake in his talk to the combined meeting of the student electrical engineering society and the le high valley section of the american institute of electrical engineers last friday night the meeting opened with a ban quet at 6:30 served by the sun inn at the engineering societies meeting room in packard labora tory the meeting then adjourned to the auditorium to hear mr blake's lecture on primary distri bution systems mr blake a distribution system engineer for the general electric company illustrated hi-s lecture with lantern slides and a special moving picture which demonstrated the advantages of using the new equipment new feature cited the main feature said mr blake is a change in the manner of distributingnhe electricity at load centers or towns in the old system the high voltage line ran to a single large capacity sub-station which lowered the voltage before sending the current out to the load in the new system the high voltage line runs to a number of small distri buting units at different places in a community and thus each unit takes care of only a small section there are two main advantages to the new system the first is that the use of the small units makes it possible to expand the distribut ing capacity of the system in ac cordance with the growth of the demand thus it is no longer neces sary to risk the investment that was formerly necessary in order to erect a large sub-station whose final capacity might not be called for for many years the second advan tage of the small units is the fact that their design makes it possible to standardize them and thus rea lize the savings that come with quantity production of any item mr blake showed pictures of ac tual installations that were work ing in a very satisfactory manner mr blake has made an intensive study of the problem during the past eight years and his contribu tions to the central station indus try on the subject have earned him the charles a coffin foundation award leather is x-rayed by lehigh skins during the separate processes of curing soaking liming and bat ing the technique employed was the method wherein the three-di mensional lattice work forming the crystal structure of a substance serves as a diffraction grating for x-rays from the study of the structure of calfskin as indicated by molyb denum radiation it was found that there is no fundamental change in the collagen the fibrous substance on the skin during processes which precede the final tanning of the skin it was also shown that the col lagen in calf and goat skins is structurally the same coming events surely dying from the halls of old lehigh the causes for this change have been analyzed and some interesting conclusions can be drawn the tea party 1 ' without tea has also been marked for oblivion from all indications there has been quite a change from the times when regular board meetings were held just on general princi pals the regular meetings of the board have been suspended with but the dreaded words face the setting sun always are awaiting the frosh who makes a slip a noticeable difference has taken place in the length of the paddles the relative merits of the long and short paddles will not be discussed here but at present the short ones are in vogue the truth of the mat ter is that because of the depres sion the boys can't afford the long paddles it was rumored that the dorms had enacted a new truce with the freshmen but so far the planks on the toll bridge have been numbered twice the old system of making the frosh replenish the house silver supply while away for the week end has also died out the favorite rendezvous of the college men can still be determined by a casual glance at the spoon bowl the new method of handling the freshmen has been found to work except to get silver the fresh men still wear their dinks and say hello once in a while most of the reprimanding is done by a stiff talkin gto and maybe the threat of a tea party howland to address eta sigma the advent of new methods of using and manufacturing elec trical distribution apparatus would tend to increase the serviceability and decrease the cost of transmis sion lines was emphasized by d.k blake in his talk to the combined meeting of the student electrical engineering society and the le high valley section of the american institute of electrical engineers last friday night the meeting opened with a ban quet at 6:30 served by the sun inn at the engineering societies meeting room in packard labora tory the meeting then adjourned to the auditorium to hear mr blake's lecture on primary distri bution systems mr blake a distribution system engineer for the general electric company illustrated hi-s lecture with lantern slides and a special moving picture which demonstrated the advantages of using the new equipment new feature cited the main feature said mr blake is a change in the manner of distributingnhe electricity at load centers or towns in the old system the high voltage line ran to a single large capacity sub-station which lowered the voltage before sending the current out to the load in the new system the high voltage line runs to a number of small distri buting units at different places in a community and thus each unit takes care of only a small section there are two main advantages to the new system the first is that the use of the small units makes it possible to expand the distribut ing capacity of the system in ac cordance with the growth of the demand thus it is no longer neces sary to risk the investment that was formerly necessary in order to erect a large sub-station whose final capacity might not be called for for many years the second advan tage of the small units is the fact that their design makes it possible to standardize them and thus rea lize the savings that come with quantity production of any item mr blake showed pictures of ac tual installations that were work ing in a very satisfactory manner mr blake has made an intensive study of the problem during the past eight years and his contribu tions to the central station indus try on the subject have earned him the charles a coffin foundation award leather is associate professor of chem ical engineering and kenneth g chesley lehigh institute of re search fellow are the authors of an article on x-ray studies of animal skin which was published in the january issue of the journal of the american leather g lem sts asso ciation the investigation was undertaken for the purpose of determining whether or not any structural changes could be detected in animal skins during the separate processes of curing soaking liming and bat ing the technique employed was the method wherein the three-di mensional lattice work forming the crystal structure of a substance serves as a diffraction grating for x-rays from the study of the structure of calfskin as indicated by molyb denum radiation it was found that there is no fundamental change in the collagen the fibrous substance on the skin during processes which precede the final tanning of the skin it was also shown that the col lagen in calf and goat skins is structurally the same coming events surely dying from the halls of old lehigh the causes for this change have been analyzed and some interesting conclusions can be drawn the tea party 1 ' without tea has also been marked for oblivion from all indications there has been quite a change from the times when regular board meetings were held just on general princi pals the regular meetings of the board have been suspended with but the dreaded words face the setting sun always are awaiting the frosh who makes a slip a noticeable difference has taken place in the length of the paddles the relative merits of the long and short paddles will not be discussed here but at present the short ones are in vogue the truth of the mat ter is that because of the depres sion the boys can't afford the long paddles it was rumored that the dorms had enacted a new truce with the freshmen but so far the planks on the toll bridge have been numbered twice the old system of making the frosh replenish the house silver supply while away for the week end has also died out the favorite rendezvous of the college men can still be determined by a casual glance at the spoon bowl the new method of handling the freshmen has been found to work except to get silver the fresh men still wear their dinks and say hello once in a while most of the reprimanding is done by a stiff talkin gto and maybe the threat of a tea party howland to address eta sigma
