the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 108 no 44 tuesday may 1 2001 all the lehigh news first bazaar provides afternoon of food and fun by lauren bell news writer provost ron yoshida kicked off lehigh's 14th annual international bazaar in the courtyard between maginnes hall and fairchild-martindale library saturday the festival showcased diversity on campus as more than 20 student orga nizations presented fashions food dance and music from different coun tries and cultures hot and cold international foods were offered at the various tables run by student organizations the turkish students association for example offered ethnic puff pastries and shish kababs the entertainment was free to all attendees kevin sullivan 01 said he was happy that other people besides students came out for the bazaar i enjoyed seeing people from the community as well as fellow students and teachers sullivan said residents of bethlehem including mary kacmar enjoyed the ambiance of the event this is a beautiful event kacmar said all the other people who stayed at home don't know what they are missing there were a number of student-per formed acts including a fashion show a group who played traditional mexican b&wphoto by ryanlicwinko music on guitar break dancing greek dancing demonstrations and a traditional indian song sung by a member of the indian student association isa szymon zietek 01 particularly liked the live traditional mexican music i thought the live music really added a nice touch to the atmosphere zietek said the greek dancers performed four dif ferent kinds of dances including ikariotiko kritiko syrto zeimbekiko and the hasaposevriko during the last dance the members of the group encour aged the crowd to learn and participate the fashion show featured many dif ferent styles ranging from hellenic fashion to chinese other international fashions featured were turkish mexican pakistani egyptian french and indian at the chinese student club both participants could play a game of chinese chess while at the isa booth a participant could pay to have a henna tattoo drawn on him mikey montenegro 02 visited the isa booth and got a henna tattoo i was just browsing the different booths and i saw that they had some really cool patterns montenegro said the international bazaar was hosted by the global union the office of international education and various student organizations students faculty and residents of the lehigh valley were immersed in a wide array of culutres at the 2001 internationl bazaar saturday afternoon keim speaks about perks of greek life by catitjn cantor news writer dr will keim told students the reasons to become involved in greek life and keep it alive through his formula for creative pas sionate living as well as suggestions of how to be successful in college wednesday in lower grace hall keim said success was about service character integrity honesty loyalty commitment truthfulness trustworthi ness and doing your best for yourself your family and friends community state province nation and world keim said the formula for creative passionate living consists of leadership brotherhood or sisterhood scholarship and a damn fine social life if everyone joined greek life there would be diversity within the houses which would cause everyone involved to have a more interesting experience keim said individuals would learn much from their brothers or sisters that they would not otherwise learn from experiences in houses where everyone is the same keim asked attendants to stop being openly hostile toward minorities since that will only push people away from the greek system for example if someone makes a joke to his friend about another individual's sexual preference it might drive the lis tener of the joke away because he may have a brother with the sexual preference being laughed at keim said greek life also enhances social life keim asked that students know their limit with alcohol because two-thirds of rapes at col leges happen on dates and alcohol is almost universally involved in this hor rible act of violence be sober commu nicate your desires clearly say no accept no not as a rejection but just as no keim said in addition keim offered tips on dating he suggested that students should date a lot of people and should quit trying to find the right person and let the magic person sneak up on them also keim said people should be sober on dates and go out for food or go to music events because music brings people together in addi tion keim urged students to take slow hands on dates by being assertive and direct because the date will respect that students found keim to be informa tive while entertaining i enjoyed dr keim because he was informative and persuasive but at the same time he was really funny brian lenhart 04 said his approach seemed to be much more effective than an authoritative approach might have been often people say that greek members only contribute to charities and community service because they have to keim however said that it doesn't matter why people serve the point is that they do it bridget dyer 04 enjoyed the real life examples that keim gave it was cool that he took real things that happen and that people say and he made sense in a positive way out of those things dyer said for one example he said that people often say oh sororities just want your money and keim pointed out that everything costs money if you want to join a syn agogue it costs money if you want to join a library it costs money and other organizations too i hope people who are opposed to greek life for that reason will realize that now keim pointed out that if everyone joined a sorority or fraternity everyone would be a legacy he said everyone would have brothers and sisters there would be no loneliness keim said these people sitting beside you are the ones you will have as your best man or bridesmaid at your wed dings these are your friends for life toward the end of the speech he was talking about ghb the date rape drug when brent fuller 01 threw an open beer can at keim and exited the
