the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 108 no 43 friday april 27 2001 all the lehigh news first greek week commences at sayre field by nora linscheid week-long competition between fraternities and sororities begins with banner contest and tug-of-war news writer sexual innuendos and they could not bash other houses the winner of the banner contest for the fraternities was delta tau delta fol lowed by phi gamma delta in second place and lambda chi taking third first place for sororities went to gamma phi beta with alpha omicron pi and delta gamma taking second and third places respectively the two first place winners for the tug-of-war competition were theta xi fraterniy and alpha gamma delta sorority figi and gamma phi took second place kathryn lucas 04 a sister of a o pi was excited about her sorority coming in second place in the banner competition making the banner was so much fun and ours was very creative she said our favorite part was the leopard print the opening ceremonies for greek week were held monday afternoon at sayre field with delta tau delta fraterni ty and gamma phi beta sorority taking top honors the competition between houses began with a banner contest followed by a game of tug-of-war according to marshall kurtz 03 ifc greek week co-chairman and brother of lambda chi alpha fraterni ty the participating sororities and fra ternities were judged based on the content and creativity of their banners along with the enthusiasm of the pre sentation the houses that showed a positive image received more points kurtz said kurtz added that houses were expected to follow general guidelines for their banners banners could not include any references to alcohol or photo courtesy of michelle marshall newly initiated phi gamma delta brothers clad in purple paint participated in a contest of tug-o-war during the opening ceremonies of greek week 2001 pike sponsors annual dream girl pageant by amy cohen jessica hadad brings alpha phi their fifth straight competition win proceeds go to charity news editor alpha phi sorority won the pike ' dream girl competition for the fifth year in a row tuesday night in lower grace hall the contest which is sponsored every year by pi kappa alpha fraterni ty had 15 contestants from the nine sororities the winner was jessica hadad 04 in addition to the regular contes tants there was a surprise contestant jessica clinkenbeard from delta delta delta sorority newly initiated pike brother chris campbell 04 was dressed up as jessica i had a great time campbell said it was all in good fun and i hope every body enjoyed it the cost of admission was 3 per person a good portion of the money earned by the event will be donated to united cerebral palsey some of the proceeds will also be donated to pike alumni john pollick 98 who was attacked and hit violendy on the head one evening while walking back to the house according to matt johnson 03 pollick is now a quadriplegic johnson 03 andjared boschen 03 coordinated the evening johnson was pleased with how the competition went i thought it went really well he said all the girls were really great and every one did a great job the first stages of competition were evening wear beachwear and a talent com petition in which all 15 girls participated after these events were completed the group was narrowed to three finalists jess davidson 04 representing alpha chi omega laurentia ash 04 repre senting chi omega and hadad repre senting alpha phi pi beta phi contestant tierney verderami 04 thought the evening was well-planned i thought everything went smoothly behind the scenes verderami said i had an awesome time ron de los santos 02 and greg nirshberg 01 were the co-emcees for the evening the sorority girls in the audience were great nirshberg said they were really loud and spirited the finalists each had to answer one question the topics of the questions were extremely varied one question was would you rather wear a life pre server for 24 hours or ride a horse wher ever you go and another was if you were in a lesbian biker bar what would be your best pickup line the finalists also participated in phys ical challenges that consisted of throwing water balloons eggs and frisbees at newly initiated pike brothers the talent competition featured several different talents including singing various types of dancing yoga and some trumpet playing natalie landgraf 04 represented gamma phi beta and played the song air gai on the trumpet as her talent i was very nervous because there were so many people there landgraf said i tried to have fun with it while some girls were trying to win others said they came just to have fun lena andrews 04,-who represented alpha omicron pi enjoyed herself while trying to win some points for her house at the same time i had fun that is mostly why every one was there to have fun and maybe get some points for their house in good spirit of greek week andrews said a diverse panel of judges chose the winner the panel included tony silvoy the owner of goosey gander rob riley 02 lehigh's wave man and pike dream girl 1999 andrea tantaros 01 when all the final votes were counted ash placed third and davidson second leaving hadad with the crown the event was sponsored by blockbuster goosey gander 11 lehigh pizza perkins and starters pub ash received a gift certificate to blockbuster davidson received a gift cer tificate to perkins and hadad received flowers and a gift certificate to starters the contestants also won points for their
