the brown and white vol 108 no 42 4aii the lehigh news first earth day talk examines suburban sprawl by kara wetzel managing editor suburban sprawl is endangering the environment and our sense of community pulitzer prize-winner thomas hylton said in a speech that served as the highlight of lehigh's second earth day celebration wednesday along with hylton's speech the earth day events featured music by local artist robert blake and tents with information on environmental issues an estimated 70 people were at the lecture almost double last year's earth day attendance hylton is the author of save our lands save our towns the book attacks pennsylvania's land use prac tices and focuses on the prevention of suburban sprawl hylton emphasized building more towns that have schools shopping areas and homes within walking distance of each other this he said will not only save land space but will also create more of a sense of community and foster neigh borly relations the increasing tendency to build large houses and shopping areas outside of cities in the past 40 years have been an experi ment gone wrong hylton said since cities have lost much of their populations to what used to be farmland not only is the rural environment ruined by this expansion but the situation has been exacerbated because the land is being designed for cars not people while people used to be able to walk to most places they are now forced to drive everywhere making them more inactive and unhealthy hylton said tim lyster 02 and amanda henry 02 organized the event with a group of students from professor albert wurth's environment and society class lyster thought the tenant of hylton's speech was something the entire audience could understand i thought it was an excellent speech lyster said no matter what your interest level or knowledge you could still appreci ate what he was saying lyster said he was pleased that the event gathered more sponsors this year we all thought it was extremely suc cessful particularly because we were able to include more organizations this year earth day garnered support from student senate the visiting lecturers committee and the english earth and environmental science science technology and society religion studies economics history and journalism departments b&wphoto by amanda henry lyster said these sponsorships yielded about triple the budget of last year's event he said plans were in the works to try to get environmentalist julia butterfly hill a woman who lived in a tree for two years to make a political statement to come next year robert blake a musical political and environmental activist from philadelphia sang songs to earth day participants about mounting environmental issues battle winner tubb to play sundaze by nora linscheid news writer jam band tubb won the battle of the bands contest thursday in lamberton hall and will open at sundaze on may 5 the competition which included performances by seven bands was meant to encourage the lehigh com munity to display its musical talents and ability while vying for a time slot in which to play at sundaze according to university productions music chair justin sluka 02 each band played for about 20 minutes and was then evaluated by five judges on their performance the five judges chose their three favorite bands sluka said they got together immediately following the show and the band with the most votes won besides tubb the bands that partic ipated in the contest were orphic theory bad blood brad and ryan charles murphy situation 7 and the slicked up 9s ivor griffiths 02 is a member of situation 7 and a regular performer at lamberton and godfrey daniels he enjoyed playing at the event but was disappointed with the judging i guess i just didn't know how they b&wphoto by amanda henry judged griffiths said the poster implied that the crowd got to pick the winner that didn't happen but if we lost there was a reason we lost ashley johnson 04 was impressed with the performances and the sound quality of the competition everyone was great she said i really liked venom he was a member of one of the bands sluka said the turnout was good of course there were swells of people with each band but overall there was a decent crowd all night he said johnson agrees it wasn't a huge crowd but i defi nitely noticed that there were a lot of people there she said according to sluka up would like to hold the competition every year to give a student band the chance to play at sundaze not only this event he said but we also hope to hold a jam night to give stu dents a place to play on campus johnson hopes that more music related events will be provided on campus for students next year she said it would be nice to have more events like the battle of the bands competition where some students were given a chance to share their music and other students were able to enjoy listen ing to the music seven lehigh bands performed in the battle of the bands
