the brown and white lehigh uni vol 108 no 41 all the lehigh news first -« uvauuj 9 __ f_r __ m v __._•---_ gov ridge to speak at commencement by amanda gontarz news editor pennsylvania gov tom ridge will speak june 3 to the class of 2001 at the 133 rd com mencement at goodman stadium ridge will receive an honorary doctor of humane letters degree at the ceremony senior class president brian witlin 01 said in a press release that he is honored to have ridge speak gov ridge is an accomplished and inspirational politician who has carved his own path and is the definition of a self-made man witlin said he has shaped the economic and educational systems in pennsylvania to make it a more technologically educated state and an example to the rest of the nation witlin vice president jan triani 01 secretary stephanie bailer 01 and treasurer jason stone 01 e-mailed the members of their class last spring for suggestions for the commencement speaker they then compiled a list of the top 10 candidates and presented it to president farrington before the academ ic year ended triani said farrington's office then contacted a number of the suggested candidates and waited for the replies bailer said choosing the right speaker was a challenging task for the officers we wanted to pick someone that would relate well to the senior class inspire us with personal advice and experience and motivate us to pursue our dreams and goals bailer said i think our class will be pleasandy surprised to hear that we have chosen governor ridge he is an extreme ly accomplished individual and i believe he is an excellent example of the success that we all aspire to ridge grew up in erie pa and grad uated from harvard university in 1967 after serving in the u.s army he earned a law degree from dickinson law school he was elected to congress in 1982 as a republican and has been re-elected six times ridge took the governor's office in 1995 and was in the running to becom ing president bush's vice-presidential candidate according to triani ridge might consider running for president in a future race one day the seniors could be saying the president spoke at my grad uation she said triani said she originally did not want to have a politician speak at commence ment but is now excited to have ridge address the class she said 1 think lehigh is very fortu nate to have the governor as our speaker photo courtesy of university relations out of all the colleges and universities in pennsylvania he chose to speak here he was asked to speak at over 50 schools some not in pennsylvania pennsylvania gov tom ridge will receive an honorary doctor of humane letters degree when he speaks at the class of 2001 commencement ceremony lambda chi holds risk management week speaker relates experiences with drinking repercussions that can result from being irresponsible by nora lincheid news writer since his recovery hatzai has been working as a counselor and speaking at college campuses they asked me to speak here he said because as a fraternity you guys are the leaders on campus hatzai remembers having a great time while drinking but doesn't think the good times were worth the price he had to pay hatzai's accident caused him to be mentally out of commission for two years according to an article written in the syracuse university daily orange on april 27 1992 he suffered two frac tured wrists a fractured hip a hairline fracture in his neck and internal bleed ing in his head when you're drunk you think that nothing can happen to you hatzai said that's what i thought before my accident lambda chi alpha fraternity spon sored a week-long effort to promote risk management among its brothers last week speakers were invited to discuss topics such as rape sexual assault and alcohol abuse with the brothers ross trachtenberg 02 the assistant fraternity educator for lambda chi said the house made a commitment under president jonathan watkins 01 to put a strong focus on risk management risk management means trying to recognize and avoid dangerous situa tions trachtenberg said fraternity educator ross hurwitz 01 also pushed for these events among the speakers was stephen hatzai a drug and alcohol counselor from philadelphia who spoke thursday b&w photo by lauren lustbader about his experiences with alcohol abuse two weeks before his graduation in 1992 hatzai fell 40 feet out of a house at syracuse university while drunk sustain ing permanent injuries including a speech impairment and a paralyzed arm lambda chi invited speakers to its house to help educate its brothers on issues like alcohol and sexual abuse as part of the fraternity's risk management week see hatzai page 4 i iimiiii„mwm"».,|qp it » — jffmmmmmmm the men's lacrosse team *^^^ i lost to army 16-10 h see page 15 nigr j sports 15,17-20 . wt * track and field 18 i men's tennis 20 ij softball 20 the women's center !
