sponsors project impact due to expire in the fall the success of project impact lehigh's attempt to decrease drinking and violent behavior and enhance the educational experience for students has been put into question by students and faculty according to john smeaton vice provost for student affairs project impact has shown many indications of success throughout its operating time the lehigh community has been able to witness a significant reduction in crime reports it is commonly known that many of the disciplinary problems are linked to alcohol abuse smeaton said so having lower crime rates is a major source of gratification smeaton also credits the increased interest in substance-free housing substance free housing is an oppor tunity for students to live in an envi ronment where people don't bring alcohol-related problems back to the dorm this is gauged as an indicator of impact's success three years ago there were about 11 people interested in substance-free housing he said now there are around 200 people in addition smeaton said there has been a decrease in students going to the hospital for alcohol poisoning some students however believe that project impact has created more prob lems than successes in my personal opinion people are being pushed to sit in their rooms and take shots conor miller 01 said at least when we used to be able to go to dance parties and drink we were able to sweat off a lot of the alcohol david miesse 03 agrees i don't think project impact has affected drinking at all miesse said the only difference is the size of the parties everybody still drinks and everybody still drinks a lot smeaton said impact still has a long way before all problems are worked out courtesy of the gladstone collection the gladstone collection is on display at zoellner arts center from march 14 to june 10 the collection shows how baseball and culture are interwoven students question safety in south side by issabella shields recent attack off-campus raises concerns about proximity of dangers of the local area residents news writer campus crime rates have declined over the past several years and there is some indication that those rates are still falling but what constitutes campus crime and is the bethlehem area a safe place for students to live a resident of brodhead house was attacked last friday and said she felt very safe around the outskirts of campus until the incident on the corner of new and morton streets took place at approximately 11:30 p.m the victim said she was walking from brodhead to an off-campus house when a man came from behind and hooked his arm around her neck he then threw her against a parked car kicked her pulled her hair and tried to beat her until she finally got away i was so shocked that this was hap pening and i was starded that this guy was so angry at me the victim said he was yelling at me all because i had not paid attention to him when he asked me if i wanted some of his sandwich campus police chief edward shupp said that an area is only as safe as the people make it lehigh and the city of bethlehem are very safe places shupp said there is safety in numbers i do not recommend to anyone walking any where alone at night things like this can and do happen from time to time it depends on the individuals at a certain time in a certain place the victim said she tried to attract attention while the attack was happening i was screaming and yelling and thinking that someone would come and no one did she said i guess that if people heard me they just assumed it was a drunken fight with somebody that i knew the incident occurred on the same block as wawa not only do many lehigh students frequent the establish ment but there is a police sub-station located inside bethlehem and lehigh police officers use this space to write up reports while staying visible to anyone in the area wawa is a pretty heavily trafficked area at night and there are always lots of police officers in there all through the night shupp said it is odd that an assault happened at that place but some thing like this can happen at any time shupp believes that education is the key to living safely students can't expect the police or the university to make this a safe haven shupp said students need to be aware of what can and can't happen tom dubreuil associate dean of stu dents agrees with shupp and encour ages students to make good decisions if you live in brodhead or any resi dence hall don't let a person in the build ing if you don't know him or her he said and if someone is coming to your build ing make sure you meet them at the door besides attending university police seminars shupp recommends off campus students stop by bethlehem police sub-stations so that they can become familiar with the area with the construction of lehigh's new residence hall and the further expansion into the community shupp requested a sub-station be built inside the complex we will be moving a lot of students into the community which is a good thing shupp said but we need to have a partnership with all parties involved we will utilize the sub-station to get the word out about prevention proactivity and programming it will be available 24 hours a day for anybody who has a ques tion or concern that they wish to speak to an officer about dubreuil said he gives shupp and the campus police a lot of
