the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 108 no 35 friday march 9 2001 all the lehigh news first wave man wins mtvs vj for a day by noeiia cabrera riley gets his fifteen minutes of fame as he competes against others for host of popular tv show news writer rob riley 02 also known by many as wave man at lehigh football games appeared on mtvs wanna be a vj contest monday tuesday wednesday and thursday this year marks mtvs fourth annual wanna be a vj contest it's run a bit differently this year due to the unpopularity of the past two winners ray muhns mtvs current holder of the vj title hosts the show riley said he thinks ray is a cool person but does not know how to act on television mtv messed up with the past two vj's if you watched mtv you didn't see ray too often riley said this vj contest is the first thing he's done since spring break last year the show which airs monday through friday from 3:30 until 4 p.m has been running since late last year mtv picks out who will be contes tants during the half hour they know how to pick their matches and like certain match ups riley said there are always three contestants and one wins at the end of each day if someone wins four consecutive days in a row they must compete against muhns himself on the fifth day head to head they are voted on by viewers through the internet and by telephone if mtv feels the winner can do a better job than muhns being a vj they will let the audience's vote count if they don't feel the person is capable however they will in a sense fix the show so that ray keeps winning until they find the person they really want to fill his place they want someone who can carry on a really good show riley said they won't let somebody in that won't give them exactly that they let the audience pick who will go up against ray but they have the final say there have been three people who have made it through the fourth round but none have defeated the current vj according to riley most have lost to ray by a two percent margin i want to make believers out of anyone that thinks i can't do it if they're b&wphoto ky stella malit.k rob riley shows his rapport relations and changes in the new century at cohen lecture news writer strobe talbott former deputy secre tary of state and founding director of the yale center for the study of globalization focused on globalization in a lecture entitled america and the world challenges in the new century in baker hall at the zoellner arts center tuesday the lecture is part of the 15th annual cohen international relations lecture series instituted at lehigh in 1986 to promote understanding of international affairs and world peace following a welcome statement by provost ron yoshida henri barkey chair of the department of international relations introduced talbott talbott's lecture focused on the global ization of the new world after the end of the cold war he invited the audience to think of the political leaders currently in office urgency tends to drive out the impor tant in which the world will see in ten twenty or fifty years from now talbott said as a prelude to understanding the current international system talbott explained the history of the cold war a system based on a universal divide between the democratic west and the communist east pick an era talbott said you look at any of the past important situations it was focused on the word versus talbott demonstrated how the world was sliced in two because of conflicting ideologies that of the democratic free market and that of the closed communist world this division caused a great amount of fear which many people in the audience had experienced the opposing ideologies were so intense as seen in the cuban missile crisis that the activation of nuclear war heads was a plausible fear the end of the cold war wasn't just the good guys in the west winning and the loss of a potent ideology but rather the death of divisions talbott said talbott explained the current system of the world is of globalization where barriers of the past like the iron wall of the cold war are nonexistent instead countries are working together and having significant effects on each other even the still-existing communist china is looking for ways to open up to more globalization talbott said we are all on the same side in theory and in many cases practice but with the promise of globaliza tion talbott offered some challenges for the next generation of foreign policy makers these challenges were not of an ideological nature like those of the cold war but challenges threat ening economic intellectual and cultur al divisions talbott said that we must recognize the astounding percentage of poor in the world the world's ecological problems and cultural wars around the world no place in the world is far enough away to ignore talbott said nihar desai 01 a political science major found talbott's lecture to be very helpful i am very interested in global affairs desai said it is interesting to watch how conflicts come about and remember what mr talbott said and have his thoughts in the back of my mind according to barkey talbott is heavily involved in foreign affairs partic ularly when it comes to russia and has written six books the lecture was followed by a question and answer session and was attended by students
