illustrated probality and science discussed by physicist theory used in dealing with disintegration of radio-ac tive elements that current day physics does not deny casuality was affirmed by max petersen associate professor of physics last evening in the auditor ium of packard laboratory about 300 persons attended the lecture probability and modern physics professor petersen elaborated on his topic by declaring that where there fails to be any atomic deter minateness one must also admit that these concepts are restricted to one of two modes of description of the phenomena involved by developing the subject from simple illustrations of balls in bas kets petersen showed the boltz mann bose-einstein and fermi dirac statistical method the ex planations of the behavior of gases molecules atoms and electrons were given the explanation of the brown ian movement in terms of the sta tistical theory is simply that on the tiny particle the impacts of sur rounding molecules are so few that they deviate appreciably from sta tistical equilibrium he added after outlining the methods and something of the results of the sta tistical theory in its legitimate realm the phenomena of great ag gregates of particles professor pe tersen added that there were other places in physics where we speak of probability such as the disintegra tion of radio-active substances the wave theory of electrons has become in a few months our most powerful tool in the entire field of electro physics he stated before elucidating on that phase of mod ern physics yet the wave theory of light was shown to be inadequate in many regards he added for it fails completely to describe the ra diation of black bodies professor petersen quoted from kant's cri tique of pure reason to show the two different concepts of the term causality kant's postulate of cau sality i construe to be a metaphysi cal postulate he stated causality in the sense of classical physics has a different meaning the solution of certain mathematical relations differential equations involving the quatities and their derivations con stitute the classical meaning of cau sality according to the speaker i am persuaded that there may be a way through the legitimate use of intuition to restore the notion of atomic determinateness to a sure status he concluded the fritz engineering laboratory is nearing the completion of exten sive tests sponsored by the baldt anchor chain and forge corpor ation of chester pa on stud link anchor chains according to c hale sutherland professor of civil engin eering the materials include forged alloy-steel cast steel and wrought iron chains ranging in sizes from seven-eighths to two and one-half inch diameter stock the tests provide for ascertain ing failures in the pulling of chains transverse loading of a single link standard tension tests on the chain stock and chemical analysis of the metal some of the chains carried weights of over 650,000 pounds the importance of the attesta boltzmann bore einstein and fermi-dirac statis tical methods illustrated probality and science discussed by physicist theory used in dealing with disintegration of radio-ac tive elements that current day physics does not deny casuality was affirmed by max petersen associate professor of physics last evening in the auditor ium of packard laboratory about 300 persons attended the lecture probability and modern physics professor petersen elaborated on his topic by declaring that where there fails to be any atomic deter minateness one must also admit that these concepts are restricted to one of two modes of description of the phenomena involved by developing the subject from simple illustrations of balls in bas kets petersen showed the boltz mann bose-einstein and fermi dirac statistical method the ex planations of the behavior of gases molecules atoms and electrons were given the explanation of the brown ian movement in terms of the sta tistical theory is simply that on the tiny particle the impacts of sur rounding molecules are so few that they deviate appreciably from sta tistical equilibrium he added after outlining the methods and something of the results of the sta tistical theory in its legitimate realm the phenomena of great ag gregates of particles professor pe tersen added that there were other places in physics where we speak of probability such as the disintegra tion of radio-active substances the wave theory of electrons has become in a few months our most powerful tool in the entire field of electro physics he stated before elucidating on that phase of mod ern physics yet the wave theory of light was shown to be inadequate in many regards he added for it fails completely to describe the ra diation of black bodies professor petersen quoted from kant's cri tique of pure reason to show the two different concepts of the term causality kant's postulate of cau sality i construe to be a metaphysi cal postulate he stated causality in the sense of classical physics has a different meaning the solution of certain mathematical relations differential equations involving the quatities and their derivations con stitute the classical meaning of cau sality according to the speaker i am persuaded that there may be a way through the legitimate use of intuition to restore the notion of atomic determinateness to a sure status he concluded the fritz
