the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 108 no 29 friday february 9 2001 all the lehigh news first daddy's money is going to surf away by sarah goldman assistant news editor bruce taggart vice provost of information resources spoke to the student senate tuesday about a student technology fee to be added to tuition for the upcoming year student senate also discussed combining fraternities with the residence life office the technology fee will be 100 per semester and will be added to students bursar bills all student must pay the fee regardless if they live on or off campus it will take the place of the communications fee previously 75 a year this is a competitive package to keep lehigh competitive taggart said this fee will help support a multitude of changes for residents and student life every student will be given a licensed copy of microsoft office programs in this package include word excel publisher access and small business tools taggart said in addition to the software plans for distribution of new versions of the software have been made if an upgrade becomes available it will be downloadable off the internet the following semester the retail value for this package is over 500 according to taggart in order for lehigh to remain competitive the system needs to be revitalized some of the gradu ate student computer labs are using five year-old computers this is not making us very compet itive taggart said plans for improvement include b&w photo by ryanucwinko upgrading current workstations with new computers the university is currently using nine megabytes of bandwidth but by next year they plan on having 45 megabytes taggart said ir feels this change is nec essary to keep the network from running out of space ir does cull the traffic and a majority of the used space on the network is for research but students are at 70 percent utilization of the space now in addition the shared 10 megabytes in residence halls will be switched to 10,000 megabytes we plan a significant increase in band width in residence halls taggart said wireless technology is going to expand to keep lehigh competitive next year rauch business center fairchild-martindale and linderman libraries will be able to support wireless lap top computers taggart plans to increase computer usage in all of the buildings but will focus on linderman linderman is greatly underused taggart said my goal is greater utilization in the next year in addition to these buildings the university center front lawn will be a wire less network area wireless technology allows laptops to have access to the network without being plugged in to a lan or a modem software for this technology is available in the bookstore taggart said off campus students will be able to access the network from an off campus interet service rrovider isp instead of the through the new technology fee off campus students will be given the opportu nity to get on the network through fast net internet access will be 24 hours a day guess who has the phatest pad of them all by austin bump if you thought that you had the best looking dorm room think again holli warholic 01 and olga argeros 01 of taylor college were named the first and second place winners of the third annual phat pad contest tuesday the first place winner received a 150 gift certificate while the second and third place winners received 100 and 50 gift certificates respectively according to contest judge anthony hillman 01 the contest has been spon sored for the last three years by the residence hall association the idea was originally introduced during the 1998-99 school year by a member of the rha executive board it began as an incentive for students to design their room while using individual creativity the contest is beneficial because lehigh is always looking for good resi dence hall photos to be used in universi ty publications ranging from admissions brochures to residence hall life represen tations used by residential services hillman said the judging took place throughout most of tuesday between 10 am and 7 p.m the judging panel was comprised of students and faculty as well as members of the rha executive board administrators including the dean of students also judged the contest hillman said each room was judged on three categories uniqueness general usability and general looks when the judges were here they said that they really liked my posters and christmas lights as well as some origami in my room warholic said hillman said winners are chosen for individuality and creativeness the main thing that the judges are looking for is really how special your room is and how individually unique the specific design is hillman said phat pad entry forms have been available in the university center for the last three weeks with the only restriction being that the contestant b&w photo by amanda gontarz news writer must be living in a residence hall fraternity and sorority
