mountain making it the biggest event this year we skied for about 2 1/2 hours and it was a lot of fun desantis said it was my first time but it was a good opportu nity for people who ski a lot to have the chance to get out while lift tickets were free for all partic ipants five students won free ski rentals in a contest sponsored by lehighlive.com rha president anthony hillman 01 said this was the first time in three years that skiing was included in the winterfest activities we opted not to include skiing in the last couple of years because there was concern that there wouldn't be enough snow hillman said but that wasn't a problem at all everyone i talked to said they had a great time - we were very pleased kevin cassidy 04 thought the trip was a good way to have fun away from lehigh the event was great cassidy said i only had to pay 14 for ski rentals and we were out there for close to three hours it was a great chance to meet people and it provided me with some thing to do besides just hanging out in friends rooms or going up on the hill nathaniel golub 04 said the event was a good way for students outside of the greek system to meet each other the winterfest is a great program golub said i ski a lot so the ski trip was a good opportunity to meet other people who share my same interests hillman said the ice skating event held saturday at the lehigh valley ice arena has been a staple of winterfest since its inception this year however the rha decided to include a luau theme scott sundby 04 said lehigh should hold more free student events i was really impressed with the turnout sundby said i think that there should be more sponsored events that are free for students the third event the phat pad contest will determine who has the most creatively decorated room on campus hillman said rha received about 25 entries for the contest winners will be announced on photo courtesy ofholu warholic wednesday the first prize winner will receive a 150 gift certificate from the lehigh valley mall and the second and third place winners will receive 100 and 50 gift certificates respectively desantis said she was worried about the turnout for the winterfest activities i was kind of nervous because there were other activities going on that looked promising desantis said but i was very pleased with the amount of people who have been participating students ice skated saturday at the lehigh valley ice arena as part of rha's winterfest 2001 activities which included a ski trip and a room decorating contest link between discipline behavior found by gina montana news writer lehigh researchers said preschool chil dren who are strictly disciplined by their parents are likely to develop overly aggres sive behavior during their adolescent years roy c herrenkohl professor of soci ology and anthropology and jean russo research scientist for the center for social research published their findings on the link between abusive child rearing and aggressive behavior in the february issue of the journal child maltreatment their study is the nation's longest con tinuing study of child abuse herrenkohl and russo studied 297 families who had volunteered to partici pate in the study they observed these families and studied the behavior of the families preschool children in situations in which they interacted with their mothers and other children in and outside of the home several years after these observations herrenkohl and russo resumed their study of the same children at grammar school age they gave the children's mothers and teachers questionnaires to evaluate the chil dren's behavior in several cases the teachers reported having problems with some of the chil dren's aggressions herrenkohl and russo related the data they gathered about the children during their preschool years to the behavioral problems the teachers reported and eval uated their findings on three criteria for child rearing they found that greater severity of physical discipline by parents at the preschool age results in a high level of aggression as the children approach the 11-year-old mark according to herrenkohl a positive parent-child relationship particularly between mother and child is crucial to the development of a child's demeanor and behavior the more negativity surrounding a parent-child relationship the greater the possibility for displaced aggression later in life for that child he said the last factor herrenkohl and russo evaluated was the affluence of the studied families their results showed that the children living in poverty were overly aggressive meredith pinckney 02 was surprised to hear that a family's financial standing can affect the aggressiveness of their chil dren's behavior i figured the degree of a family's wealth obviously will affect the develop ment of their children pinckney said i just would have never related it to aggres sive behavior you can see that evaluating children's aggressive behavior is certainly not simple herrenkohl said herrenkohl said he hoped his and russo's research will help to change how some parents raise their children if new parents got help with parent ing they could be helped to be more pro ductive in practice herrenkohl said we want to help parents become more productive in raising their children to be productive themselves herrenkohl and russo's research began in 1974 as part of a state-funded research program on abuse and neglect of children by their parents the program was sponsored by such organizations as the child welfare agency and mental retardation agency head start in 1976 they received funding by the federal government to expand and con tinue their research herrenkohl's and russo's next project is to reveal certain relationships between the school age behaviors of children and their demeanors as adolescents herrenkohl said we have continued to study the same children throughout their adolescent years and have found additional relationships between the school age behavior of the children and their behaviors as adolescents hi p^ikf mens and women's chris mulvihill speaks is lehigh's tuition too *• * basketball teams beat about the history of high mrsg
