the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 108 no 26 all the lehigh news first tuesday january 30 2001 center receives grant from nasdaq by rudy kaplan business pages editor the martindale center held a celebra tion dinner last week to honor the nasdaq educational foundation which recently announced a 100,000 grant and five-year partnership with the center the grant will support the journal perspectives on business and economics published annually by the martindale center for the study of private enterprise nasdaq will also provide an addition al 15,000 to support the center's scholar in residence program which brings well-known members of the busi ness community to lehigh for lectures and discussions the featured guest at the dinner was laura levine director of education and information for nasdaq's foundation levine discussed how the martindale center was chosen for the grant the nasdaq foundation board and i were so impressed with the quality of the perspectives journal levine said we feel that the opportunity to work on perspectives is excellent because it's not just the students who go on the trip and write the journal who benefit but rather everyone who reads the journal that's one thing that's important to us - the benefit can spread beyond the first user of the funds perspectives consists of papers written by martindale student associates who have spent time in a foreign country and have studied the local economy fourteen student associates traveled to ireland last year they are now in the process of researching and writing their papers which will be published later this year j richard aronson is the director of the martindale center we've been producing the journal for 20 years and it has grown to a nice circu lation but it has never been truly exten sive aronson said our objective with this grant is to expand the circulation dra matically electronically or otherwise the martindale center was founded in 1980 through an endowment by elizabeth fairchild martindale and harry turner martindale 27 the center states that its mission is to advance educational and scholarly pro grams to increase understanding of the u.s economy and its relationship with the world economy the center which is tied to lehigh's college of business and economics but draws students from every college at the university picks its new student associ ates every year from a select group of b&w photo by rudy kaplan juniors students may apply to the erin rebele,'ol went to ireland last year program after being nominated either by as a student associate a faculty member or by maintaining a high gpa lehigh faculty met with nasdaq to accept a grant from left james hall laura levine of nasdaq j richard aronson and provost ronald yoshida turanchik takes director position in athletics by noelia cabrera b&w photo by lauren lustbadek news writer barbara turanchik executive direc tor of the lehigh alumni association will take over the position of director of the athletic department's partnership program in march turanchik will take the place of craig anderson 60 who retired in june i'm looking forward to working with athletic director joe sterrett and all of the coaches and staff in athletics turanchik said on lehigh's web site they are a great group of people that i have respected for their job in enhancing the athletic experience at lehigh and i look forward to adding my contribution too as director of the partnership program which supports the 23 intercollegiate teams turanchik will continue to build relationships between the lehigh athletic alumni and the university right now the partnership program's funds are about 600,000 and our goal is to go higher with that amount and get more people and alumni involved she said i am always up for a challenge and i think this is definitely a challenge for lehigh this challenge is one that will allow me to use my skills to develop another dimen sion to the athletic partnership program building on the foundation set by craig anderson turanchik said on the web site turanchik said another part of the challenge would be informing students including non-athletes about the athletic partnership program they need to know that alumni ath letes are also giving back turanchik said you have what you have because of support from loyal alumni who gave a part of what they have to improve lehigh for future classes barbara turanchik will take over the position of director of the athletic department's partnership program from craig anderson starting in march see turanchik page 4 see nasdaq page 4 uvm fkj bi women's basketball office of international is genetic testing rk m loses to bucknell 89-79 education sponsors ethical fac w^yf see page 14 trip to kenya see page 7 w^;piyj»j s ee p a g e 3 the air from a cough i jjr i^___lfil moves at 600 miles per "■__■* v^rli i sports 13"16 news 1"4 science 7-9 hour ejj t__j_slfr swimmin9 15 college news briefs 2 migraines 8 kl__nl sht men's basketball 16 mad cow disease 9 c wrpcflinn 1r sourcerwww.uselessknowledge.com
