injured on first play after opening kickoff of game ware played brilliant football as safety man ; short makes consistent gains •. by langdon c dow the fighting marquis of easton traveled to taylor stadium satur day afternoon expecting to find a set-up awaiting them in the form of a lehigh team and they found it in the first half only in a much dif ferent form from that expected during the first 30 minutes of the battle lafayette was pushed around and set back in every corner of the maroon territory possibly one of the greatest fighting lehigh teams in years was out there smearing lafayette's offensive thrusts right and left in addition to gaining at will through a maroon forward wall that was regarded as the second strongest in the east although lafayette finally emerg ed victorious 13 to 7 lehigh fol lowers fully realize the fact that coach austin tate's starting team aided by five late substitutions bat tered and fought down practically three fresh lafayette elevens coach herb mccracken sent in streams of substitutes in the second third and fourth periods to try to stem the spirit of this slowly weary ing band of brown and white uni formed warriors whose neat white jerseys at the beginning of the game now told the story of the fierce ness of their struggle chick halsted hurt lehigh hopes took a severe jolt as chick halsted coach tate's triple threat halfback was injured on the first play after the opening kickoff he was not forced to leave the game but his ball carrying ability was considerably cut down and not as effective as in former games his accurate pass to cap tain allan ware paved the way for lehigh's touchdown which kept the brown and white forces ahead during the first half the throng of 12,000 spectators had hardly settled in their seats be fore captain ware-gathered hal sted's pass into his arms on lafay ette's 20-yard line and then zig zagged his way through the leo pard secondaries to push over a touchdown a feat equalled only by colgate this season against coach mccracken's powerful defensive machine ware kicked the extra point making the score lehigh 7 lafayette 0 before the game was five minutes old phil bugen and al soco low did the scoring for lafayette the former a reserve fullback plunged o,ver from the two-yard marker reuter had partially block ed short's kick and the leopard's powerful drive was started from lehigh's 18-yard line six plays took the ball to lehigh's two-yard line and the following play gave lafayette its first score after hav ing trailed behind for three quar ters socolow scores for lafayette al socolow did quite a bit of damage throughout the fourth quar ter substituting for wilcox the diminutive halfback squirmed his way through lehigh's forward wall numerous times for nice gains he finally crossed the brown and white goal line thus raising la fayette's score to 13 points after cook's placement kick went wide it would be useless to attempt to pick out lehigh's outstanding per former the type of game turned in by stein clark rauch hirshberg and halsted was clearly indicated by their exhausted condition when removed late in the fourth quarter demarest suvalsky and baker fin ished the game turning in stellar performances notwithstanding the fact that an average of three fresh men had been opposing them all af ternoon doering short and ware form ed the trio of unsubstituted lehigh backs while ike gormley took hal sted's place in the closing minutes of the game their work contrast ed with that of the 10 backs by lafayette clearly shows a distinc tion paul short reeled off numer ous substantial gains after twist ing his way past the leopard for ward wall captain ware played a brilliant brand of football in the safety position when the ends were down too close and the ball taking all kinds of bounces the lehigh leader made no mistakes in trying to scoop it up at other times he made running catches of punts run ning them back sometimes as far as versity at the first part of last year 46.66 went to the unemployed otherwise known as student labor forty-three dollars and seventy eight cents was spent for 1972 en velopes one for popper one for sonny and one for the head of each of the 38 living groups the inserts cost 29.01 the clerical work which was done by the regular office force cost 2.50 while the professors re porting cards cost 4 this year the system of getting out valentines was changed lit stead of betting with the students and printing the valentines when they are needed the registrar's of fice has changed its side and has printed two envelopes for every student assistant registrar schwartz expects to save money under this plan with less loss by having the work done while the of fice force is normally idling valentines cost university 125 largest item is student labor for the welfare of her students lehigh university pays out approx imately 125 by sending out valen tines according to assistant regis trar schwartz for the first semester last year 2,015 valentines were distributed to 967 worthy students these way ward boys which were 63 per cent of the total enrollment of the uni versity cost their almo mater exact ly 125 95 at that time this fig ure does not take into considera tion the time spent by professors and instructors nor the supervision of the registrar's office by certain advanced mathemati cal reasoning known only to en suggestion to the committee that they eliminate the usual favors and reduce the price to four dollars per couple but the committee did not see fit to adopt it i will suggest the same thing to the junior prom committee in the spring and will continue to do so until it is accept ed we have audited all the ac counts and a close survey shows everything to be as represented the students will give injured on first play after opening kickoff of game ware played brilliant football as safety man ; short makes consistent gains •. by langdon c dow the fighting marquis of easton traveled to taylor stadium satur day afternoon expecting to find a set-up awaiting them in the form of a lehigh team and they found it in the first half only in a much dif ferent form from that expected during the first 30 minutes of the battle lafayette was pushed around and set back in every corner of the maroon territory possibly one of the greatest fighting lehigh teams in years was out there smearing lafayette's offensive thrusts right and left in addition to gaining at will through a maroon forward wall that was regarded as the second strongest in the east although lafayette finally emerg ed victorious 13 to 7 lehigh fol lowers fully realize the fact that coach austin tate's starting team aided by five late substitutions bat tered and fought down practically three fresh lafayette elevens coach herb mccracken sent in streams of substitutes in the second third and fourth periods to try to stem the spirit of this slowly weary ing band of brown and white uni formed warriors whose neat white jerseys at the beginning of the game now told the story of the fierce ness of their struggle chick halsted hurt lehigh hopes took a severe jolt as chick halsted coach tate's triple threat halfback was injured on the first play after the opening kickoff he was not forced to leave the game but his ball carrying ability was considerably cut down and not as effective as in former games his accurate pass to cap tain allan ware paved the way for lehigh's touchdown which kept the brown and white forces ahead during the first half the throng of 12,000 spectators had hardly settled in their seats be fore captain ware-gathered hal sted's pass into his arms on lafay ette's 20-yard line and then zig zagged his way through the leo pard secondaries to push over a touchdown a feat equalled only by colgate this season against coach mccracken's powerful defensive machine ware kicked the extra point making the score lehigh 7 lafayette 0 before the game was five minutes old phil bugen and al soco low did the scoring for lafayette the former a reserve fullback plunged o,ver from the two-yard marker reuter had partially block ed short's kick and the leopard's powerful drive was started from lehigh's 18-yard line six plays took the ball to lehigh's two-yard line and the following play gave lafayette its first score after hav ing trailed behind for three quar ters socolow scores for lafayette al socolow did quite a bit of damage throughout the fourth quar ter substituting for wilcox the diminutive halfback squirmed his way through lehigh's forward wall numerous times for nice gains he finally crossed the brown and white goal line thus raising la fayette's score to 13 points after cook's placement kick went wide it would be useless to attempt to pick out lehigh's outstanding per former the type of game turned in by stein clark rauch hirshberg and halsted was clearly indicated by their exhausted condition when removed late in the fourth quarter demarest suvalsky and baker fin ished the game turning in stellar performances notwithstanding the fact that an average of three fresh men had been opposing them all af ternoon doering short and ware form ed the trio of unsubstituted lehigh backs while ike gormley took hal sted's place in the closing minutes of the game their work contrast ed with that of the 10 backs by lafayette clearly shows a distinc tion paul short reeled off numer ous substantial gains after twist ing his way past the leopard for ward wall captain ware played a brilliant brand of football in the safety position when the ends were down too close and the ball taking all kinds of bounces the lehigh leader made no mistakes in trying to scoop it up at other times he made running catches of punts run ning them back sometimes as far as versity at the first part of last year 46.66 went to the unemployed otherwise known as student labor forty-three dollars and seventy eight cents was spent for 1972 en velopes one for popper one for sonny and one for the head of each of the 38 living groups the inserts cost 29.01 the clerical work which was done by the regular office force cost 2.50 while the professors re porting cards cost 4 this year the system of getting out valentines was changed lit stead of betting with the students and printing the valentines when they are needed the registrar's of fice has changed its side and has printed two envelopes for every student assistant registrar schwartz expects to save money under this plan with less loss by having the work done while the of fice force is normally idling valentines cost university 125 largest item is student labor for the welfare of her students lehigh university pays out approx imately 125 by sending out valen tines according to assistant regis trar schwartz for the first semester last year 2,015 valentines were distributed to 967 worthy students these way ward boys which were 63 per cent of the total enrollment of the uni versity cost their almo mater exact ly 125 95 at that time this fig ure does not take into considera tion the time spent by professors and instructors nor the supervision of the registrar's office by certain advanced mathemati cal reasoning known only to en gineers it has been estimated that the cost of sending a student a val entine is approximately 13 cents it makes very little difference if.a man receives one or seven valentines of the 125.29 spent by
