the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 108 no 24 tuesday january 23 2001 all the lehigh news first 1 women prepare for sorority rush to begin by amanda gontarz news editor formal sorority rush or recruitment starts tonight as women from all classes prepare to meet and greet each other in order to determine who will be the new members of each sorority with the addition of chi omega nine sororities are participating in rush this year though there are a number of sopho mores and juniors mostly freshmen women will be participating marissa gold 04 plans on rushing but does not have a certain house in mind i am excited for it but a litde appre hensive just because i don't know exacdy what's going to happen gold said my plan is to go in with an open mind and if something seems to fit for me then great but if not it's definitely not the end of the world for me i am not going into rush hoping to be in one place or another because i really don't know enough about any of them to be able to make that decision gold said tonight the rushees meet and talk with sisters at four of the sorority houses this will continue wednesday when rushees will see the remaining five houses the new sorority on campus chi omega will be having its rush parties in the university center as it does not yet have a house to call their own becky burris 01 is the recruitment chair for chi omega i think that recruitment is going to be a lot of fun for all the houses but espe cially chi omega burris said all the new sisters are very excited about meeting the women interested in joining one of the sororities here christine donnelly 04 has mixed feelings about rush i'm a litde apprehensive about what rush will be like i'm not even sure it's for me yet donnelly said those women who continue to rush after the first round will attend up to seven parties between thursday and friday instead of just talking with sisters the these parties the women will participate in a philanthropy project each house will be making a different craft all of which will be donated to a certain charity on saturday rushees will attend up to four social events these include a night of dancing and skits performed by soror ity sisters b&wphoto by ryanucwinko sorority and rushing women are ready as the first round of formal rush begins tonight it will last until next tuesday when rushees will receive their bids bush sworn into office as clinton leaves by greg meyer george w bush takes presidency saturday in washington amid protesters and supporters assistant news editor we will reform social security and medicare sparing our children from strug gles we have the power to prevent bush said and we will reduce taxes to recover the momentum of our economy and reward the effort and enterprise of working americans another point that bush made was that he wants the people to take an active role in helping to better our country i ask you to be citizens citizens not spectators citizens not subjects responsible citizens building communities of service and a nation of character bush said at one point during the new presi dent's speech he paid gratitude to his former opponent i thank vice president gore for a contest conducted with spirit and ended with grace bush said bryan tomlinson 04 watched the inauguration but disliked bush's speech his speech seemed like it was direct george w bush was sworn into the office of the presidency in a relatively short ceremony that began at 11:30 a.m saturday after taking the oath which was administered by chief justice william h renquist the 43rd president of the united states delivered his inaugural speech which clocked in at just under 15 minutes the cold and wet weather in washington resulted in a much smaller crowd than expected the 30-degree temperature coupled with gusts of wind and rain caused the crowd to participate less than most past inaugural audiences when bush began to speak about policy issues however he was often inter rupted by loud cheering and applause ed toward people who didn't vote for him he wanted people to get over the election and put their faith in him tomlinson said in addition to the bush supporters that showed up for saturday's events there were also many protesters lining the parade route running down pennsylvania avenue according to cnn.com there were at least half a dozen arrests made before the oath was even taken those that were arrested were charged with disorderly conduct metropolitan police department spokesman joe gentile said one such incident occurred at the beginning of the parade route when both an egg and a tennis ball were hurled at the presidential limousine from the crowd that lined the street aside from these few incidents there were a number of groups staging non violent protests along the parade route signs could be seen that read such things as hail to the thief selected not elected and it is bad karma to steal an election chanting arose from one group at freedom plaza proclaiming hey hey ho ho that son of a bush has got to go some mainstream activist groups including the national organization for women and al sharpton's national action network announced that saturday was a day of resistance against what they called an illegitimate presiden cy based on the premise that it was decided by a divided supreme court to prepare for the overwhelming number of protesters the district of columbia metropolitan police department brought in 1,600 outside officers which more than doubled its existing staff
