the brown and white a 11 the lehigh news first leh mackey reads in linderman by amanda macmillan vol 108 no 18 news writer accomplished poet critic and author nathaniel mackey read and spoke about his improvisational poetry monday for an audience of students and staff at linderman library mackey's reading was the second in a program called poetry and music lehigh visiting writers series that the english department is sponsoring with support from the mark twain lecture series fund and the africana studies department the focus of this series which pre miered last week with carl hancock rux is the intersection between poetry and music in the context of contempo rary african-american culture monday's session began with an intro duction by assistant professor of english seth moglen a personal friend and former student of mackey after welcoming the audience and declaring that poetry at lehigh is alive and well moglen gave a brief summary of mackey's accomplish ments and a description of his works improvisational experimental avant garde post-modern cross-cultural diasporic sensuous and spiritual both all of these seem to be descriptive words for nate's poetry moglen said also enormously ambitious in its scope and subject matter b&wphoto by laurenlustbader one of the principal occupations of nate's poems moglen added is the intent to record the traces of iden nathaniel mackey reads his poetry in linderman library as part of an english department series focusing on african-american poetry and music election exciting for viewers by katy dyer kara wetzel assistant news editor news writer and after months of anticipation students anxiously watched the presidential elec tion drama unfold tuesday night only to be left with no clear winner before the evening was through the country witnessed electoral college votes being given and taken away the popular vote shifting between candidates a winner being declared and then a deci sion that the vote was too close to call as of wednesday night vice president al gore led gov george w bush in the popular vote as well as the electoral college the election hinges on a recount of votes in florida which will give the candidate 25 electoral college votes and the presidency no matter which candidate students were rooting for most agreed that the excitement of the election was something they will always remember pj gill 01 stayed up until 1:45 a.m watching cnn to see the results come in i think it's awesome that the first elec tion that most of us could vote in turned out to be so close and so exciting gill said jorge couto 04 was surprised at how close the election turned out to be as a new voter the close race encouraged me to get involved couto said now i know that every vote really can make a difference clare cambria 04 also recognized the importance of voting following the close election i regret that i didn't get a chance to vote since it's such a close race she said election night yielded some confusion as several networks announced electoral college winners before even 20 percent of the votes were counted which is what hap pened with florida the networks gave florida to al gore early in the night leading many to believe he would be the sure winner only to recant later in the evening as bush gained more votes tim lyster 02 thought the election might change television news policies i think the networks have finally been taught they shouldn't try to predict everything he said lyster cited a washington state senate election in which the networks declared one winner then wednesday recanted and declared another the close election showed the impor tance in the difference in the popular vote and electoral college count if the popular vote were looked at gore would be the clear victor jackie stancu 04 thinks the mixed results show the inadequacies of the electoral process when the american people come out to vote their popular vote should be the deciding factor she said gill agreed i think that it's a system that's worked in the past but might need revision depending on the outcome he said the networks called the election shortly after 2 a.m declaring bush the winner gore conceded defeat but then changed his mind leaving the presidency undecided as wednesday came and went most students were left with the same question that jasmine foreman 04 wandered around her dorm asking she said so uh who's president project lewis underway by noelia cabrera news writer the new project lewis online reg istration procedures to facilitate easier registration started monday morning without any major computer glitches as of wednesday morning 2,066 seniors and graduate students were regis tered via the internet on the first day alone 1,460 seniors were registered registrar bruce correll said the new system seems to be working effectively any system with a transition will have start up problems along with com munication issues but through the first few days students and faculty have been incredibly cooperative to make sure the system has a chance to be successful and it will be correll said he added i really appreciate the cooperation and patience students and faculty have shown up to this point with the new system seniors have first priority and were able to register monday while juniors began registration on thursday sophomores will start on monday morning while freshman can begin on next thursday correll said it will be interesting to see how each group handles this new system and how the system handles the workload as well one source of confusion for stu dents so far has been the usage of two pin numbers the student identification code is the student's social security number not their four-figure e-mail name the first pin is created by the student the second given by the student's advisor which serves as the equivalent of the advisor's signature correll said students have misunder stood which code belongs in which spot he attributed this confusion to student neglect he said students have neither been reading the instructions online thor oughly nor the information given to stu dents two weeks prior to registration correll said that he has been updating the
