abusive behavior because of alcohol in a program addition that went public early tuesday morning dean of students sharon basso released the new proposal in a mass e mail to the campus outlining the steps these steps have been designed as a response to the heightened hospital stays of first-year students at the begin ning of this semester seven freshmen have been taken to the hospital this year with an average blood alcohol content of 285 one student's bac was a 39 the program addition states that any alcohol offense a first-year student commits will result in having his or her rush privileges revoked this also includes ghost pledging and borders rights being revoked from the individual also as before two serious alcohol offens es will result in the suspension of the student and any officer has the right to ask for identification from a student at any event tom dubreuil associate dean of stu dents said this is a slight policy change for first-year students he said it will not depend on the severity of the alcohol offense but any infraction student affairs and certain sections of project impact have changed their subsidy policy in that they will pay for 50 percent of required event staff for regis tered parties until spring 2002 the old proposal had greek houses assuming 100 percent of charges for event staff next year in addition student affairs will be offering a reward system for houses that hold registered parties the houses will get one free night of event staff for registered parties and after four registered parties with the individual houses paying for 50 percent of event staff student affairs will pick up the next eight parties a house can have up to nine parties paid for by student affairs if a social policy is violated or an inves tigation is held the quota of registered parties is put on hold and houses are required to pay for half of the event staff if the outcome is positive the count is picked back up again if the house's social local area news writer the ben franklin technology partners of northeastern pennsylvania launched a new web site at the lehigh career fair in september designed to attract and retain highly skilled workers in the region where-to-be.com promotes northeast ern pennsylvania as a region known for its technology posting job listings of tech nology companies a young professionals bulletin board of activities and ideas links to activities and attractions in the region support for entrepreneurs profes sional education opportunities and lifestyle information laura eppler director of communica tions said one purpose of the where-to be.com is to point out entertainment oppor tunities in the area for young people the new web site also links pennsylvania companies with universi ties funding and other resources to help them based on goodman campus the ben franklin technology partners is funded by the state as an educator of technology market ing and other professions lehigh was seen as a prime location for the launch of the web site the ben franklin technology partners of northeastern pennsylvania recently asked some of their client companies if they would be interested in working col laboratively to present career opportunities in small and medium-sized companies at the career fair twenty companies displayed employ ment opportunities available in the lehigh valley hoping to promote growth in the labor field the staff set up the booth to increase student awareness of not only the large companies but also the smaller and medium-sized companies more than 1,200 lehigh students from an array of disciplines attended the career fair of the 1,200 students who attended the career fair 120 resumes were given to the ben franklin staff a large number of students were later interviewed and offered jobs eppler said we want to encourage students to visit where-to-be.com and inform them of the opportunities because many client companies of the ben franklin technology partners have cited labor shortage as a major obstacle eppler feels it is important to attract and retain technology employees and recent college graduates one goal of the site is to educate workers around the country about the opportunities in the lehigh valley and to attract them to this region eppler said sometimes what you are looking for is in your own backyard and you don't know it earlier this month an article entitled asahi shimbun appeared in a daily tokyo newspaper the article cited the lehigh valley as an emerging technology hot bed similar articles have appeared in the wall street journal the new york times and the washington post the recognition of international papers signifies that this is the real thing eppler said the company is charged with high technological development in northeast ern pennsylvania the company works with start-up firms as well as established manufacturers to encourage technological innovation for the purpose of strengthening the regional economy see
