the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 108 no 11 tuesday october 17 2000 all the lehigh news first new housing strengthens ties with town by bevin milavsky senior news editor lehigh's board of trustees has approved a plan to build campus square at the intersection of new and morton streets to provide more on-campus student housing and integrate the univer sity more effectively into the south side bethlehem community the 23 million housing complex which will be funded by a bond will include single rooms clustered in apart ment-style residences to accommodate 250 students a 16,500-square-foot university book store will also be housed there along with some type of coffee shop or restaurant in addition a parking garage and surrounding area will provide parking for 400 cars a pedestrian plaza will be placed on morton street on the east and west sides of campus square at the location of the new street turnaround housing it will be three stones high in keeping with the heights of surrounding off-campus buildings housing will also be located in the third fourth and fifth floors above the bookstore and in the second third fourth and fifth floors above the retail shops and eateries according to lehigh's web page president gregory farrington said the goal of the new project is to close the gap between lehigh and the sur rounding business district and commu nity in bethlehem campus square will breach the asphalt moat separating lehigh university b&wphoto by ryan licwinko from the rest of bethlehem farrington said many universities have asphalt moats but lehigh is part of bethlehem it is part of the community farrington explained that the location was a crucial factor in fostering better relations between the university and bethlehem campus square will provide stu dents with another on-campus housing option but it will do more than that he said we are consciously locating this complex at new and morton streets because we think it will be a catalyst for downtown revitalization our goal is to blur the boundaries between university and town entice students off campus and be a magnet for students and resi dents to infiltrate and mix bethlehem mayor don cunningham said campus square supports efforts by the city and the university to design and create a business district surrounding lehigh's campus evalu ate traffic flow install attractive period street lighting create an incen tive grant fund to help restore south side building facades and install new sidewalks campus square will benefit resi dents and business owners on the south side it is a major step toward a much more vibrant south side business district and a downtown attractive to both lehigh students and local residents cunningham said lehigh hopes to break ground on the new project in spring 2001 and com president gregory farrington and bethlehem mayor don cunningham speak about bridging the gap between the university and the bethlehem community dance party benefits breast cancer fund by kara wetzel assistant news editor more than 9,000 was raised saturday night at the panhellenic council's second annual dance marathon to benefit breast cancer awareness entrants paid 5 to enter the event in lower grace hall which featured a dj for several hours and the band froggy style all of the money raised will be used to support the susan g komen foundation a breast cancer awareness fund the marathon lasted from 9 p.m to 4 a.m and had sorority members present for every hour each sorority was required to have 10 members at the marathon at all times in addition fraternity members and freshmen were encouraged to show their support the people in attendance varied throughout the night with the highest attendance during the hours that froggy style performed the lancaster pa band played ska covers of popular songs laura kirk 01 panhel's vice president of communications organized the event all in all it was a success i had a lot of help from sorority presidents and dele gates which was great kirk said panhel provided incentives to the greek organizations to get involved offering a free catered dinner to the soror ity that raised the most money delta gamma sorority which had already raised 1,100 before the event had even started raised the most funds and will be rewarded with the dinner kirk said the fraternity with the most members in attendance would receive 250 to go toward their non-alcoholic party that they are required to have despite the incentives the crowd at the marathon was overwhelmingly female derek rounds 02 a member of sigma alpha mv fraternity came to the event to show support and thought that more males should have been in attendance if the guys at lehigh were smart they would come here to pick up girls there's more girls here than anywhere else on the hill rounds said rho chis encouraged freshmen halls to attend the event as well the freshmen halls with the most atten dance the most money raised and the longest time spent at the marathon all received prizes jenn caffrey 02 alpha gamma delta sorority's panhel representative stayed at the marathon all night and was pleased with the results she said however that she was surprised at the low numbers of freshmen and fraternity members i'm disappointed there was not a lot of fraternity support caffrey said planning for the marathon started last spring kirk began the fundraising by sending letters to all sorority alumnae she said the response has been great almost 3000 has been raised from the former sorority members i check my mailbox every day and each time there are checks waiting for me kirk said we've gotten some for 5 and some for $ 100 they are a great resource to tap in addition to the sorority alumnae kirk sent letters to the mothers of fra ternity members appealing to them to encourage their sons to come to the event letters were also sent to local busi nesses during the summer to ask for see dance page 6
