the brown and white vol 108 no 10 friday october 6 2000 all the lehigh news first large investment to further academics by brooke herman editor in chief president gregory c farrington announced monday that lehigh's board of trustees has approved a groundbreak ing investment of 75 million toward its academic excellence over the next five to seven years the largest investment in the univer sity's 135-year history will be used to strengthen undergraduate programs including computer science bioscience and biotechnology develop market sensitive graduate programs to attract the most competitive national and inter national students and to obtain the finest faculty the school hopes the funds will help in the matriculation of the best students distinguish itself in critical academic areas and give scholarships to potential students the initiative's funding will come from reallocations of funds internal savings investments of the trustees and designated gifts according to farrington the plan will not be financed by raised tuition the venture is hoped to be a propeller of lehigh's thriving status we're living in very good times for very good universities that is especial ly true for lehigh university farrington said the university has never been more competitive but good times are exactly the wrong time to sit back and relax acknowledging that the existing faculty has needs and ideas farrington announced that he and provost ron yoshida will accept faculty proposals we recognize that our faculty has many ideas he said we're going to be calling on them through an open process and we will pick the best and most creative proposals will be judged based upon six criteria the goals compared to the university's college and departmental pri orities strong leadership well-defined metrics and accountability good finan cial planning for program creation and permanence strong faculty commitment and the extent to which they redirect and steer existing resources and attract new external support in a memo to faculty tuesday yoshida announced meetings set to begin next week to discuss the proposal process and answer questions at the announcement everybody was very excited bill johnson lehigh spokesman said everybody's very anxious to see what ideas emerge using this faculty-assisted plan a few projects have already been decided a humanities center proposed by gordon beam associate professor of philosophy is in the plans for the next couple of years it will be a machine for bringing people who have an interest in human ities together beam said it will be a learning house for events and a place to display research progress steven sametz professor of music is organizing a summer choral arts work shop scheduled for june groups are being assembled for the visual and candidate par ticipated in the first presidential debate tuesday night the debate mediated by veteran pbs newsman jim lehrer took place at the clark athletic center at the university of massachusetts-boston under the commission's ground rules green party candidate ralph nader and reform party candidate pat buchanan were excluded from partici pating in the debate because of their insignificant standings in polls this debate was a defining moment in the campaign because it was the first time that the candidates have been side by side in such a close race according to abc newsman peter jennings gore answered the first question of the debate he said he has not questioned bush's experience as lehrer's question asked but that he has ques tioned bush's proposals he spoke about many of his ideas to explain why he feels he is a better candidate than bush gore gave some of his own proposals which include balancing the budget every year paying down the national debt putting medicare and social security in a lockbox and tax cuts for middle class families gore said i will make sure that we invest in our country and our families and i mean investing in education health care the environment and middle class tax cuts and retirement security that's my agenda and that's why i think that it's not just a question of experience bush has different ideas than gore about how to deal with the budget surplus he wants to take half of the surplus and dedicate it to social security one-quarter of the surplus and dedicate it to important projects band the other quarter of the jack to the people who pay the bills mt everybody who pays taxes to sir tax rates cut bush said candidates had a lengthy about social security gore said plan for privatization would drain 1 trillion from the system and lead to benefit cuts while bush said there would be no cuts for seniors and that younger workers want more say in how their payroll taxes are invested bush said he is willing to work with both republicans and democrats to get some positive things done when it comes to treatment of senior citizens we need somebody who can come up to washington and say look let's forget all the politics and all the finger pointing and get some positive things done on medicare and prescription drugs and social security bush said throughout the debate bush accused gore of trying to frighten people into voting for him the man's running on medicare trying to frighten people in the voting booth bush said bush referred to gore as a man of numbers and accused gore of spitting out
