the brown and white vol 108 no 9 tuesday october 3 2000 all the lehigh news first indian new year celebrated through light by sarah goldman news writer lehigh's indian student association celebrated a night of tradition symbol ism and cultural reflection by honoring diwali saturday in baker hall diwali's the festival of lights symbol ism is different throughout various regions in india every state celebrates diwali in its own way showing unity despite intra region diversity in all of the different beliefs the one underlying factor is good triumphing over evil in some places it is believed to cele brate laxmi the goddess of prosperity and wealth another tradition is celebrating diwali to mark the victory of lord ram over the evil ravan diwali celebrated in october is held on the darkest night of the year lights are lit for symbolic reasons darkness is representative of ignorance and light helps to wipe it away the holiday is con sidered to be the indian new year this year's festival had many acts showing the rich indian culture imbed ded in lehigh's campus the first act had many dances showing examples of indian life the brown sugar girls demonstrat ed through interpretive dance how to get what they want from men ruth aa gayee re another dance sequence rep resented the changing of seasons in indian culture deval joisher 01 and parag gupta 03 performed works from inspirational indian movies produced by bali-wood the second act gave glimpses of indian life throughout the entire country the north south east and west regions were each represented through fashion shows and dance enrique mancillas 02 felt the show was a good way to represent indian culture a lot more cultural clubs should put on performances like this one he said it is a good way to show students and community members other cul tures on campus assistant dean of students michelle samuels spoke to the audience urging them to embrace culture and take some thing away from this performance anil trindade 01 thought the diwali festival was worthwhile the diwali show was a fabulous demonstration of the immense talent and culture that is inherent in the lehigh population trindade said it was great to see students work hard to display their heritage monica malhotra 02 president of the indian student association felt the program was a success before this year lehigh was not cul turally diverse but we pulled together and put on a good show despite the numbers malhotra said this was a good start to show how strong we are on b&w photo by ljndseyfuchs campus and an effective way to show good things to come this year's performance was spon sored by the office of multicultural affairs the office of the dean of students global union and the mustard and cheese drama society students celebrated diwali the indian new year saturday in zoellner arts center with symbolic dancing fashion shows and representative lights williams captivates crowd with talent by paul kaser news writer musician keller williams smooth voice and unique style captivated the audience for two hours wednesday at the stage door students started to arrive around 8 p.m to kick back after a long day of classes some of them enjoyed a pizza from pete's arena while others sat back and talked with their friends williams took the stage around 9 p.m dressed in an old blue t-shirt and gray sweatpants his bare feet touched an old carpet covering the stage - scattered with many lit candles many students found this setup unusual and inviting ivy schultz 03 said i think he has a great stage presence he alternated between playing three guitars and a drum while singing using his extensive sound equipment he recorded a melody on a guitar then put it on loop while he played another instru ment along he was truly a one-man band in some songs such as johnny b goode he would record a full melody and voice over it a few times to give the effect that there were backup singers paul johe 01 was impressed with william's musical abilities he's got a lot of control over both the instruments and the sound effects johe said throughout the evening williams performed a wide variety of music on a wide variety of topics from singing oldies to a song about breast implants he had the crowd's full attention all night ryan overberger 02 tried to catego rize the music of williams i would say it is eclectic folk he said you can tell he listens to the radio he mixes pop music with his own songs while he was performing williams entertained the crowd with his comical mannerisms by juggling during songs and even encouraging them to sing along there was a large number of students in attendance who had seen williams perform before james shondel 03 has known of the performer for about a year the show is great shondel said i've followed him he's amazing...a one man show - very talented i am real excited that he is here overberger was also a big fan of keller's music he's terrific overberger said i heard him here last fall and since then i have tried to get all the tapes of him that i could overberger thought the students that attended had fun probably half of the people here are fans overberger said but it looks like everybody is enjoying themselves the concert sponsored by university productions drew more than 75 students a large number for the stage door it is a very good turnout a little more than we thought said music co-chair a.d smith 02 smith thought that part of the appeal was that williams was able to sound like a whole band this was also the first planned event for the up music committee there wasn't a concert during welcome week so this is the first one for freshmen smith said that is one of the reasons why this is so big the freshmen want to come and see what university productions is all about at the end of the performance most of the audience was still in attendance attesting to williams ability to keep audi ence members interest after the final song which included a large sing-along that the audience gladly participated in williams received a standing ovation h hawks stay perfect speaker jim matthews garner important against ivy league by discusses dangers of interviewing tips defeating cornell in alcohol use see page 9 football see page 20 see page 4 sports 15-20 news 1-6 business 9-11 men's soccer 18 college briefs 2 career corner 10 field hockey 19 ed o'brien 4 look who's investing 11 i human teeth are almost as hard as rocks source www.sbt.bhmedia.com
