robert w hall pre medical society at its meeting held on wednesday evening dr estes is a graduate of the university of west virginia and has been in ac tive service at the st luke's hos pital for 45 years in his address to the society dr estes gave a detailed account of the developments in surgery practice that have taken place during his life time he stated that the antiseptic methods of surgery which prevailed at the time he entered the profes sion were noted for their high de gree of mortality in these methods the outstanding principle was to ap ply an antiseptic to everything that was used in connection with an op eration the air in the operating room was continuously sprayed with carbolic acid as was also the actual wound itself the effect of this acid on the body tissues in the wound was to cool the flesh and materially reduce the temperature of the patient this cooling taxed the heart and made the blood cir culation system sluggish the ex tra strain on the heart often proved fatal to the patient this source of fatalities was the greatest drawback in antiseptic surgery is leader in surgery dr estes has been a leader in the development of the aseptic methods of surgery which have al most entirely replaced the older an tiseptic methods he continued this is the method which grew out of the work of such men as koch and pasteur the postulation and growth of the germ theory is the basis on which dr estes has built his development work on as eptic surgery in this method the instruments and materials to be used in an operation are thorough ly sterilized and made germ free by heating or some other means this dispenses with the constant need for an antiseptic in the wefund and has done much toward cutting down the high mortality that was previously experienced colonel tomlinson at the meet ing of scabbard and blade thurs day evening in packard laboratory spoke of the functions of the so ciety at lehigh captain russell burk opened the meeting and in troduced the colonel mr mansback who is very much interested in scabbard and blade enlarged on the topic of activities and a r baldwin 32 gave a short resume of what scabbard and blade was going to do about activities during the coming year the meet ing was held previously to get all the advanced military science and tactics students together for a short meeting to discuss the purpose of the military society at lehigh lafayette tickets coming events as a result of the haircuts which six freshmen received at the hands of the sophomore council on wed nesday evening hamel reidy one of the victims obtained permission to speak in chapel yesterday morn ing he called the freshmen's atten tion to the fact that the dean and the upper classmen were against the disciplinary actions of the soph omore council and suggested that the frosh organize a protective committee for their own good rei dy was subsequently nominated and elected chairman of the committee in his further remarks he started a movement on the part of the frosh to disregard any future outrageous demands made by the sophomore council a meeting of the freshmen was scheduled to be held after cha pel on friday morning to follow up the matter seven freshmen were hailed be fore the council and six received punishment of a gratis haircut the seventh was released with apologies when it was found that his black tie had slipped down under his sweat er incidentally he knew his songs and cheers when quizzed the kind of punishment for the chief offender occasioned much bit ter debate he was found guilty of not knowing his regulations songs or cheers not carrying matches wearing black sox with white clocks and for walking into the council meeting with his hands in his pockets when clipping his hair was first proposed as a punishment fitting the crime many sophomores demur red on the plea that it was too strict upper classmen too inter fered as they said that the action was unprecedented and beyond the powers of the council an actual vote however disclosed that more favored than opposed the motion when the first man had had his hair clipped the result was so lu dicrous that all present were car ried away by trie spectacle and the council voted unanimously for vis iting the same punishment on the remaining five despite protesta tions almost tearful in some cases where the unlucky freshmen had already invited a girl to the senior prom the committee carried out its artistic work on the guilty heads large l's will be the most popular sartorial feature in the dis obedient frosh's dress for the next few weeks although the sugar bowl haircut popularly attributed to inhabitants of the more countri fied districts will be a close second in order to display the talents of the sophomore barbers more effec tively the frosh must wear their dinks tied around their necks with big bows the council stated that this dras tic punishment was initiated at this meeting for the purpose of stamp ing out the laxity of the freshmen in observing the regulations laid down for their good as long as we have rules for their benefit they said they must be properly enforced if these ex amples do not curb the slothful ten dencies of the freshmen in regard to their duties we will continue the punishment until the class of 35 recognizes the fact that they must be obeyed carothers speaks at chapel as cyanide pledges five undergraduates wishing only cheering section seats for lafay ette game will not make applica 1 tion but present the lafayette game coupon in athletic book at the athletic office in drown hall after nov 14 and receive cheering section ticket in return undergraduates wishing seats outside of cheering section must make application on the regular card these are now available at the athletic office follows changes made in met ropolitan papers new headline type more modern and more attractive than that for merly used makes its first appear ance in this issue of the brown and white the new type was adopted after several weeks consideration by the executive council of the brown and white upper and lower case letters are being used instead of all upper case letters which were formerly used many of the daily newspapers of the country have also made this change recently the entire new system of head lines is modeled after that used by the new york herald tribune which is considered the best auth ority on newspaper typography the latter paper made an exten sive study of headlines several years ago and decided that upper and lower case letters in newspaper headlines were more legible and more attractive a silly and outrageous business was one of the terms used by dean c m mcconn in describing the hair-cutting exploits of the sopho more council wednesday evening the dilemna of the sophomores is a real one he believes which can only be solved by abolishing the whole system which belongs to the gay nineties rather than to the twentieth century pres c r richards expressed surprise when he heard of the action of the sophomore council the pre sident thought that lehigh students were above such boyish pranks i am shocked and surprised at this af fair he declared john k beidler president of the sophomore class feels that the ac tion on the part of the council was taken because they have been egged on by upper classmen and the cri ticism of the brown and white - the action was taken he declar ed to see if the upper classes were really in favor of more drastic ac tions by the council frosh to ignore council after the action of the sopho more council remarked hamil reidy one of the victims and chair man of the freshman committee the freshmen will in the future ig nore all demands on the part of the council to apear before that body reidy insisted however that the freshman class had no wish to dis regard freshman regulations plans for the immediate organization of a freshman governing body are being formulated the abolition of the sophomore council because of their incompen tency is advocated by c b peck president of the junior class said he the belief that freshmen are fresh and that they must undergo hazing and regulation to curb this freshness is purely a myth he also was of the opinion that the brown and white editorials were greatly responsible for the ac tion of the sophbmore council \ the full text of the dean's state ment follows i have discussed wednesday evening's hair cutting exploit of the sophomore council with several seniors who are angered by it and i agree with them that it is a silly and outrageous business sympathizes with council on the other hand i have dis cussed the matter also with mr beidler president of the sophomore council and can't help sympathiz ing somewhat with the situation in which the council finds itself we have this series of more or less ri diculous freshman regulations and the council is by tradition supposed to enforce them it is constantly urged by some upper classmen and even prodded by the brown and white to do so so they feel they have to do something what can they do i had asked them to abandon the practice of dressing men up in outlandish cos tumes thereby making the univer sity appear like a prep school they felt they had to find some kind of penalty and couldn't think of any thing effective except the haircut ting it seems to me that the dilem na of the sophomore council is a real one which can only be solved by abolishing the whole system which belongs to the gay nine ties rather than to the twentieth century abolition of council this would mean abolishing both the freshman regulations and the sophomore council which i am sure the faculty would gladly do on the recommendation of the ar cadia it will be remembered that omicron delta kappa in the plat form which it proposed last year has already recommended the abo lition of the sophomore council if freshman regulations should be abolished it seems to me we might well keep in the freshman handbook a simple request to the freshman class to wear the fresh man cap if the present regulation on this point should be changed to a mere request there would prob ably be this year and next year a number of freshmen who would dis regard the request but i believe that within two or three years the mere custom or fashion of wearing the freshman cap would prove to be more effective in inducing all freshmen to wear it than any regu lation with penalties attached can be friday oct 30 8 p m sigma xi meeting 446 packard laboratory prof adel bert ford head of the depart ment of psychology will speak on the evolution of learning 10 p m to 3 a m senior ball taylor gym saturday oct 31 2 p m varsity football vs muh lenberg taylor hall 9 p m dance for dormitory and town students masonic temple neil carothers head of the col lege of business administration gave a short talk at the chapel ex ercises wednesday oct 28 when five men were pledged to cyanide junior honorary society a parked car — a red ticket — a requested visit to the dean's office and then ... a jail term not as long as dean c m mcconn is judge of lehigh traffic law viola tions the first time a man is brought in explains the dean he gets a reprimand but the second offense brings him before the disciplinary committee and his car is barred from the campus should he persist in bringing the car onto the cam pus he would probably be expelled it seems to me that we get good cooperation from the students says dean mcc6nn and i hope that this cooperation will continue to be improved so that we may all enjoy the use of our cars on the campus the dean adds a warning note by observing that the board of trustees can close the campus and sayre park to motor traffic at a moment's notice should the traffic problem ever become acute in such a case it would be necessary for both the dean mcconn is lenient judge to offenders of traffic rules faculty and students to walk the presence of prepared post holes in most of the university drives adds a material touch to this statement " faulty parking is th^ahmost ex clusive cause for arrest by the cam pus police few if any reports of reckless driving are recorded with in the last three years only three cars have been ordered from the campus and the owners made no attempt to drive them back again there are spots on the campus where no parking signs have not besn erected and any student who parks his car in such a place is given a courtesy card which ad vises him of his error but does not place under arrest the lehigh campus is patrolled throughout the day and night by harry t klase roland w bauer and thomas f malone motorcy cle police who work in eight hour shifts to keep the roads open to traffic watch for incorrectly park ed cars and prot|ct the university property several houses to hold combined dances at clubs entertainment will include le high-muhlenberg game at taylor stadium tomorrow approximately 650 girls arrived this afternoon and evening to at tend lehigh's opened the meeting and in troduced the colonel mr mansback who is very much interested in scabbard and blade enlarged on the topic of activities and a r baldwin 32 gave a short resume of what scabbard and blade was going to do about activities during the coming year the meet ing was held previously to get all the advanced military science and tactics students together for a short meeting to discuss the purpose of the military society at lehigh lafayette tickets coming events as a result of the haircuts which six freshmen received at the hands of the sophomore council on wed nesday evening hamel reidy one of the victims obtained permission to speak in chapel yesterday morn ing he called the freshmen's atten tion to the fact that the dean and the upper classmen were against the disciplinary actions of the soph omore council and suggested that the frosh organize a protective committee for their own good rei dy was subsequently nominated and elected chairman of the committee in his further remarks he started a movement on the part of the frosh to disregard any future outrageous demands made by the sophomore council a meeting of the freshmen was scheduled to be held after cha pel on friday morning to follow up the matter seven freshmen were hailed be fore the council and six received punishment of a gratis haircut the seventh was released with apologies when it was found that his black tie had slipped down under his sweat er incidentally he knew his songs and cheers when quizzed the kind of punishment for the chief offender occasioned much bit ter debate he was found guilty of not knowing his regulations songs or cheers not carrying matches wearing black sox with white clocks and for walking into the council meeting with his hands in his pockets when clipping his hair was first proposed as a punishment fitting the crime many sophomores demur red on the plea that it was too strict upper classmen too inter fered as they said that the action was unprecedented and beyond the powers of the council an actual vote however disclosed that more favored than opposed the motion when the first man had had his hair clipped the result was so lu dicrous that all present were car ried away by trie spectacle and the council voted unanimously for vis iting the same punishment on the remaining five despite protesta tions almost tearful in some cases where the unlucky freshmen had already invited a girl to the senior prom the committee carried out its artistic work on the guilty heads large l's will be the most popular sartorial feature in the dis obedient frosh's dress for the next few weeks although the sugar bowl haircut popularly attributed to inhabitants of the more countri fied districts will be a close second in order to display the talents of the sophomore barbers more effec tively the frosh must wear their dinks tied around their necks with big bows the council stated that this dras tic punishment was initiated at this meeting for the purpose of stamp ing out the laxity of the freshmen in observing the regulations laid down for their good as long as we have rules for their benefit they said they must be properly enforced if these ex amples do not curb the slothful ten dencies of the freshmen in regard to their duties we will continue the punishment until the class of 35 recognizes the fact that they must be obeyed carothers speaks at chapel as cyanide pledges five undergraduates wishing only cheering section seats for lafay ette game will not make applica 1 tion but present the lafayette game coupon in athletic book at the athletic office in drown hall after nov 14 and receive cheering section ticket in return undergraduates wishing seats outside of cheering section must make application on the regular card these are now available at the athletic office follows changes made in met ropolitan papers new headline type more modern and more attractive than that for merly used makes its first appear ance in this issue of the brown and white the new type was adopted after several weeks consideration by the executive council of the brown and white upper and lower case letters are being used instead of all upper case letters which were formerly used many of the daily newspapers of the country have also made this change recently the entire new system of head lines is modeled after that used by the new york herald tribune which is considered the best auth ority on newspaper typography the latter paper made an exten sive study of headlines several years ago and decided that upper and lower case letters in newspaper headlines were more legible and more attractive a silly and outrageous business was one of the terms used by dean c m mcconn in describing the hair-cutting exploits of the sopho more council wednesday evening the dilemna of the sophomores is a real one he believes which can only be solved by abolishing the whole system which belongs to the gay nineties rather than to the twentieth century pres c r richards expressed surprise when he heard of the action of the sophomore council the pre sident thought that lehigh students were above such boyish pranks i am shocked and surprised at this af fair he declared john k beidler president of the sophomore class feels that the ac tion on the part of the council was taken because they have been egged on by upper classmen and the cri ticism of the brown and white - the action was taken he declar ed to see if the upper classes were really in favor of more drastic ac tions by the council frosh to ignore council after the action of the sopho more council remarked hamil reidy one of the victims and chair man of the freshman committee the freshmen will in the future ig nore all demands on the part of the council to apear before that body reidy insisted however that the freshman class had no wish to dis regard freshman regulations plans for the immediate organization of a freshman governing body are being formulated the abolition of the sophomore council because of their incompen tency is advocated by c b peck president of the junior class said he the belief that freshmen are fresh and that they must undergo hazing and regulation to curb this freshness is purely a myth he also was of the opinion that the brown and white editorials were greatly responsible for the ac tion of the sophbmore council \ the full text of the dean's state ment follows i have discussed wednesday evening's hair cutting exploit of the sophomore council with several seniors who are angered by it and i agree with them that it is a silly and outrageous business sympathizes with council on the other hand i have dis cussed the matter also with mr beidler president of the sophomore council and can't help sympathiz ing somewhat with the situation in which the council finds itself we have this series of more or less ri diculous freshman regulations and the council is by tradition supposed to enforce them it is constantly urged by some upper classmen and even prodded by the brown and white to do so so they feel they have to do something what can they do i had asked them to abandon the practice of dressing men up in outlandish cos tumes thereby making the univer sity appear like a prep school they felt they had to find some kind of penalty and couldn't think of any thing effective except the haircut ting it seems to me that the dilem na of the sophomore council is a real one which can only be solved by abolishing the whole system which belongs to the gay nine ties rather than to the twentieth century abolition of council this would mean abolishing both the freshman regulations and the sophomore council which i am sure the faculty would gladly do on the recommendation of the ar cadia it will be remembered that omicron delta kappa in the plat form which it proposed last year has already recommended the abo lition of the sophomore council if freshman regulations should be abolished it seems to me we might well keep in the freshman handbook a simple request to the freshman class to wear the fresh man cap if the present regulation on this point should be changed to a mere request there would prob ably be this year and next year a number of freshmen who would dis regard the request but i believe that within two or three years the mere custom or fashion of wearing the freshman cap would prove to be more effective in inducing all freshmen to wear it than any regu lation with penalties attached can be friday oct 30 8 p m sigma xi meeting 446 packard laboratory prof adel bert ford head of the depart ment of psychology will speak on the evolution of learning 10 p m to 3 a m senior ball taylor gym saturday oct 31 2 p m varsity football vs muh lenberg taylor hall 9 p m dance for dormitory and town students masonic temple neil carothers head of the col lege of business administration gave a short talk at the chapel ex ercises wednesday oct 28 when five men were pledged to cyanide junior honorary society a parked car — a red ticket — a requested visit to the dean's office and then ... a jail term not as long as dean c m mcconn is judge of lehigh traffic law viola tions the first time a man is brought in explains the dean he gets a reprimand but the second offense brings him before the disciplinary committee and his car is barred from the campus should he persist in bringing the car onto the cam pus he would probably be expelled it seems to me that we get good cooperation from the students says dean mcc6nn and i hope that this cooperation will continue to be improved so that we may all enjoy the use of our cars on the campus the dean adds a warning note by observing that the board of trustees can close the campus and sayre park to motor traffic at a moment's notice should the traffic problem ever become acute in such a case it would be necessary for both the dean mcconn is lenient judge to offenders of traffic rules faculty and students to walk the presence of prepared post holes in most of the university drives adds a material touch to this statement " faulty parking is th^ahmost ex clusive cause for arrest by the cam pus police few if any reports of reckless driving are recorded with in the last three years only three cars have been ordered from the campus and the owners made no attempt to drive them back again there are spots on the campus where no parking signs have not besn erected and any student who parks his car in such a place is given a courtesy card which ad vises him of his error but does not place under arrest the lehigh campus is patrolled throughout the day and night by harry t klase roland w bauer and thomas f malone motorcy cle police who work in eight hour shifts to keep the roads open to traffic watch for incorrectly park ed cars and prot|ct the university property several houses to hold combined dances at clubs entertainment will include le high-muhlenberg game at taylor stadium tomorrow approximately 650 girls arrived this afternoon and evening to at tend
