the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 108 no 6 friday september 22 2000 all the lehigh news first tear awaits hayes on new mtv series by gina montana news writer andrew-kelly-hayes 03 was picked up at his house by an mtv crew on wednesday to appear in fear mtv's new raw-reality show fear is a reality show which tests how individuals cope with terror in allegedly haunted surroundings the first episode of fear found six contestants spending the weekend in an allegedly haunted house the group is left to fend for them selves in the scary environment while facing dares and challenges orchestrat ed by mtv right now my impression of fear is blair witch project meeting road rules hayes said hayes was given little information as he embarked on his journey mtv called to inform hayes that he would be picked up at his house 224 warren square at 3 p.m he did not know who was picking him up where his final destination was or what he would be faced with when he arrived mtv did suggest to him that a possi ble location for his adventure could be an abandoned condemned prison hayes initial contact with mtv's fear was during the summer hayes was working construction in boston mass when he heard a radio advertisement for tryouts what the hell i have nothing better to do nothing to lose hayes remembers thinking life is about having fun and that is what i'm here to do hayes left work early that day to wait in a three-hour line for his chance to be interviewed mtv asked hayes to keep the details of his interview confidential to avoid revealing the particulars to the viewing public and his fellow interviewees despite the strict secrecy hayes said the interview was conducted in a nonchalant fashion mtv encouraged all interviewees to just be themselves during the sessions hayes followed mtv's instructions and did not alter any aspect of his per sonality for the interview hayes viewed the interview for fear in a positive confident manner listen mtv i'm doing the inter view you're going to love me and you don't have a choice but to select me as a contestant hayes said to himself going into the meeting at the end of the interview mtv asked hayes to return the following day for a second round of interviews following hayes second interview mtv staff said they would notify him by august 29 if he was chosen for the show it was not until last friday however that mtv informed hayes he had been b&w photo by ryan ucwinko selected as a contestant for fear and that he would be picked up wednesday he received no additional information from the network andrew-kelly-hayes 03 left wednesday to participate in mtv's fear the show tests how a group copes in a scary environment facing mtv challenges nato's role evolves by jessica steinitz news editor nato supreme allied command officers discussed partnership expan sion global security issues and peace keeping efforts at a brown bag lunch sept 18 in the university center commander lee olson a submarine warfare officer in the u.s navy and lieutenant colonel peter reynolds chief of public relations for the service section of the u.k army spoke at the lunch nato's role has changed according to olson with the collapse of the soviet union and the transformation of the european political environment the alliance has been adapted to the changing security environment wel coming new members and developing new types of partnerships with non nato members in 1999 poland hungary and the czech republic were added to nato according to olson these three newest members were added because of the strong democratic control in their governments he added however that nato is cau tious about over-expanding membership any action taken by nato requires the full consensus of all 19 members explained olson for this reason a large membership would be inefficient and impair nato's ability to take action olson said that despite limiting its membership nato has strengthened its relations with non-nato members he cited partnership for peace and the euro-atlantic partnership council as examples these organizations focus on political and security matters such as arms control defense economic issues and civil emergency planning reynolds discussed nato's peace keeping operations in kosovo admitting that problems facing the war-torn society are difficult to solve with military force reynolds said there are simply not enough people in the world to police a sit uation like that that's the harsh reality entrepreneurial author gives advice sarah goldman news writer students from all areas of lehigh's academia came to hear author and busi nessman james chan speak monday about starting their own businesses chan emphasized how difficult entre preneurship can be running a business is only for people with courage who are foolhardy roman tic and a bit of a gambler he said he supported his warning with data statistically 50 percent of all new businesses fail at the end of the first year he said over 80 percent fail at the end of the fifth year fifteen percent of every body who starts a business succeeds chan also discussed how the new global economy can affect the establish ment of a business he focused on business relations with asia and asian traditions ryan yokel 02 feels international business is something of which all stu dents should be aware with the ever-increasing importance of china japan and other asian nations in the global economy it is only logical that business relations with the eastern part of the world be important he said yokel praised chan's attention to the problems of cultural differences in busi ness relations this lecture made me think about not only asian business practices but busi ness practices in general he said mr chan also
