the brown and white vol 108 no 4 friday september 15 2000 all the lehigh news first 1 fair offers programs for adventure seekers by enrique luna news writer students gathered monday on fairchild-martindale lawn to learn about study abroad programs offered through lehigh those attending the fair were given information about the available options for international academic programs there are a wide variety of interna tional study opportunities approved by the university courses are offered on several conti nents including africa asia europe and australia many students felt that studying abroad would be one of the most important and enriching experiences of their college career douglas coburn 04 feels lehigh does not emphasize enough the rewards offered by international experience lehigh should stress to a larger extent the value of studying abroad since it shows there's an entire world outside the u.s.a which we hardly know and can learn from he said while most students were excited about the chance to travel and learn about foreign countries some were dis couraged by what they felt was a lack of academic options i think this program is too limited and has only weird science and arts courses christian troost 03 said engineering students can't really find anything useful for them in the course listings while there is an interest from us to study abroad this winter lehigh is offering a 19 day seminar in the west african country of ghana this program will focus on ghanian history and cultural traditions and count for three credits students will also learn about issues affecting ghana today one student tempted by the trip to ghana is ricardo rodriguez 03 i've been waiting all my life to visit africa so studying in ghana is really going to be a great experience for me he said maybe i can even go on a safari the university is also offering a 45 day summer seminar in london during which students take one political science course worth three credits they are also given internships in british companies for which they must do 125 hours of work and receive three credits study abroad programs are also avail able for longer periods of time students can spend an academic semester or year in san jose costa rica participants will have a four week culture immersion session in the history and traditions of costa rica they will then enroll in courses at the university of costa rica the university offers these programs through the school for international training sit sit is an accredited u.s education al institution which specializes in inter national educational opportunities b&w graphic designed by stefanie ellstein and christopher mindrum according to the lehigh web site sit offers lehigh approved interna tional programs and seminars in many countries including botswana mali kenya brazil mexico china australia and tanzania interested students have a multitude of options for international study lehigh-approved programs and seminars exist for countries on six continents new professors enjoying life on south side freshman faculty members excited to participate in school's academic community events by janell vantrease news writer lehigh has welcomed new professors to each of its colleges this semester in the college of arts and sciences kathy olson joined the department of journalism and communications three weeks into the semester olson already feels at home i knew right away that lehigh was a good match for me olson said i felt comfortable right from the start although she is excited to be an active member of the arts and sciences school she doesn't want to be confined by her department i'd like to become more of a part of the lehigh community to get out past my building and explore all aspects of college life here she said olson received her bachelor's degree at northwestern university and her ph.d at the university of north carolina at chapel hill elaine chew joins the college of engineering this year as a visiting assistant professor of industries and manufacturing systems she received her b.a at stanford university in music performance and computational mathematics and her ph.d at the massachussets institute of technology at mit she participated in field studies that explored music and indus trial engineering the college of business and economics also has several recent employees david myers is a new member of the finance and law department myers earned his bachelor's degree from wesleyan university he also received an m.b.a at new york university and a ph.d from the university of washington myers is only teaching graduate stu dents but he expects to offer classes to undergraduates next semester i'm looking forward to meeting undergraduates in the spring and bring ing my business background into the classroom he said also joining the college of business and economics this year is john li a new accounting professor li has high aspirations for the upcoming year i hope to foster my capabilities to be a first-rate teacher he said li studied at washington university in st louis which he compares to lehigh both schools are private and elite with an emphasis on teaching and research he said myers also compared lehigh to his undergraduate experiences i like the feel of lehigh because it reminds me of my experience at wesleyan he said both are small schools with a close-knit faculty olson however sees differences between contemporary life at lehigh and her college experience the biggest difference between when i went to school and now is the abundance of computers and the internet she said we didn't even use computers to type papers until my senior year of college ihh 9hh is lehigh faces upenn planned parenthood summer internships 9qb bb tomorrow in
