velopment of football in america mr okeson who is head of the eastern association of football of ficials began his address by tell ing of the game called football that was played in the middle ages in england in this game the male population of one town was match ed against the male population of another the field at that time con sisted of the mileage between the two cities the game was frowned upon by the church and the state the american game developed from that played by the famous english public schools rugby in 1826 the first run with the ball was made previous to that time the ball was kicked no credit was given for touchdowns as we know them today only kicked goals counted in the scoring in 1876 the first concerted at tempt to organize football in the american universities was begun a conference was held at spring field mass when the union rugbj rules were adopted th development of the game continued rapidly and in the early eighties interference for players was instituted to george woodward former president of the yale alum ni association belongs the credit for revising the game upon which modern football rests according to mr okeson mr okeson who served as an of ficial for a number of years is men tioned in a series of articles now running in the saturday evening post by mike thompson called that's my story lehigh students win legion circus prizes edgar a holds initiation for seven the university policy of instruc tion in moral and religious philoso phy was outlined yesterday to the bethlehem ministerial association by dr claude g beardslee profes sor of moral and religious philoso phy professor beardslee's invitation to speak before the society is be lieved to have resulted from his statement that no religion was to be favored at lehigh that even athe ism would be taught to those inter ested . his statement as reiterated to the association yesterday was if the student considers himself an atheist and wishes to study philoso phy of that sort he will be ac quainted with essential arguments for and against atheism although some individual criti cism was made the association ex pressed no opinion as a body ac cording to the rev c a meiliche chairman of the committee of pub licity there was no time for a vote yesterday and that any further ac tion will be taken at a later date frank discussion held neither professor beardslee nor the officers of the association would definitely state the attitude of the meeting however the official press statement of the association as re leased by the rev w i welden mentioned that afterward there was a free and frank discussion professor beardslee said in part lehigh university requires every undergraduate as a prerequisite to graduation to receive instruction in moral and religious philosophy the reason for the requirement is found in the increasingly acute clashes between conflicting ethical and reli gious ideas and in the resultant de mands upon educated men for spir itual as well as technical leader ship it is the purpose of such instruc tion to acquaint the student with what may impartially be considered the best thought in this field in or der that they may be enabled criti cally to construct clarify and en rich a philosophy of life of their own there is no attempt to force a religious mood upon the student university directory out early week delayed letter gave some of le high's harder football opponents walter e okeson treasurer of the university and commissioner for the selection of eastern football offi cials disclosed recently this was revealed when he and j g petrikin graduate manager of athletics were asked to explain the university's policy on scheduling football games despite the mediocre success of this year's team lehigh has already announced the addition of columbia in 1932 and harvard in 1933 no further information as to our opponents will be given at present by the board of control of ath letics although the schedule for 1932 is believed complete and that of 1933 almost so we feel that is is better for the other colleges to announce the games mr petrikin explained mr okeson further clarified his explanation of some of the games on lehigh's schedule take columbia for instance he said when we first started ne gotiations with them last year they were not really out of our class they had been defeated and no one expected them to be strong enough to defeat dartmouth 19-6 as they did this season brown too was an exception at the time of the inception of the gates plan last year athletics at the university of pennsylvania were in a ferment with no one in real authority uncertain as to whether we could arrange a game with them for this season we were forced to schedule brown to insure a good team for that section of the schedule finally perm also arrang ed a game and were were left with two hard games in succession mr okeson further admitted that lehigh scheduled more big-college teams than almost any other school of its football caliber in this sector j g petrikin graduate manager of athletics stated that it is my personal opinion that the members of the football squad would rather lose a creditable game to one of the bigger colleges than defeat a small college whose reputation means nothing to lehigh students or to the public in general although we are certain that the alumni approve our present ratio of hard and easy games we realize that student opinion is the most important factor in the selection of our opponents this from mr pet rikin he also pointed out that even by scheduling easier teams lehigh could not be assured of winning i cannot think of any college which has at least one-third of le high's enrollment of which we can be absolutely sure of beating mr okeson also subscribed to this statement explaining that the general average of college football was higher in pennsylvania than in any other state in the country lehigh's graduate manager also pointed out that the financial end must be considered if our gate re ceipts dropped very much he stat ed it might be necessary to drop some of the sports for which foot ball is largely paying newtonian society has four speakers professor stocker is club's new faculty advisor the newtonian mathematical so ciety held its first meeting of the semester last night at 7:30 o'clock in room 208 is believed by some to be the largest women plat form speaker in the east the delay of an important let ter in a small connecticut post of fice gave princeton university a distinguished graduate who later became its president according to family napers recently discovered the graduate and recipient of the letter was the rev ashbel green eighth president of princeton the documents revealed that the late president green wrote to a friend in new haven conn for in formation about yale he waited patiently for the reply and after several weeks abandoned hope meanwhile a friend of the family proposed princeton which was ap parently pleasing and young green matriculated at nassau hall two weeks after he had left home the letter from new haven arrived it had been lying in a country post office for three weeks after becoming the president of princeton reverend green referred to the peculiar manner in which he had chosen his college in a letter to his son he explained it thus had i received the letter sea sonably i certainly would have chosen yale all of which goes to prove my pomt — that my entire life has taken its complexion and its course from the university which i attended and later became so inti mate with god often assigns our allotment in this world not only without our contrivance but even in opposition to it and the disappoint ment of our fondest hopes prof john dewey of columbia university who delivered the com mencement address here last june and is author of numerous books on ethics and social problems believes tat for the first time in history there is a promise that universal education will become a fact and not a dream on paper dr dewey told this to listeners of weaf sunday evening in his address second of the men of america series the columbia professor is a recognized education al authority believing education to be the basis of civilization dr dewey said unless education undergoes great transformations and prepares citizens to deal effectively with pre sent-day and anticipated problems our civilization may collapse schools he said must meet new forces which may wreck us unless they are intelligently regulated and employed cites growth of schools the philosopher after citing the phenomenal growth in schools and school registration in the past gen eration warned great as have been the changes in our educational sys tem in the past 100 years and es pecially in the past 30 s they are nevertheless slight in comparison universal education no longer dream says columbia professor with those which must be undertak en in the next generation how dr dewey asked can education stand still when society itself is rapidly changing under our very eyes the sense of unsolved social problems is all about us criticizes schools criticizing the schools as back ward and devoid of initiative dr dewey said " they have fought shy of adopting into their aims and methods enough of the new forces the forces which determine our life to fit individuals to cope with them mechanical things have sur passed the human mind in develop ment during the past generation ac cording to the columbia professor he said our mechanical devices and processes have gotten far ahead of our capacity to plan and to en joy — ahead of our minds in short although asserting that educa tors must wake up to the trend of present civilization and take cog nizance of the deplorable state of backwardness which characterizes our present system professor dew ey held out some hope and gave some encouragement to the few schools attempting to rouse them subject was the de velopment of football in america mr okeson who is head of the eastern association of football of ficials began his address by tell ing of the game called football that was played in the middle ages in england in this game the male population of one town was match ed against the male population of another the field at that time con sisted of the mileage between the two cities the game was frowned upon by the church and the state the american game developed from that played by the famous english public schools rugby in 1826 the first run with the ball was made previous to that time the ball was kicked no credit was given for touchdowns as we know them today only kicked goals counted in the scoring in 1876 the first concerted at tempt to organize football in the american universities was begun a conference was held at spring field mass when the union rugbj rules were adopted th development of the game continued rapidly and in the early eighties interference for players was instituted to george woodward former president of the yale alum ni association belongs the credit for revising the game upon which modern football rests according to mr okeson mr okeson claude g beardslee profes sor of moral and religious philoso phy professor beardslee's invitation to speak before the society is be lieved to have resulted from his statement that no religion was to be favored at lehigh that even athe ism would be taught to those inter ested . his statement as reiterated to the association yesterday was if the student considers himself an atheist and wishes to study philoso phy of that sort he will be ac quainted with essential arguments for and against atheism although some individual criti cism was made the association ex pressed no opinion as a body ac cording to the rev c a meiliche chairman of the committee of pub licity there was no time for a vote yesterday and that any further ac tion will be taken at a later date frank discussion held neither professor beardslee nor the officers of the association would definitely state the attitude of the meeting however the official press statement of the association as re leased by the rev w i welden mentioned that afterward there was a free and frank discussion professor beardslee said in part lehigh university requires every undergraduate as a prerequisite to graduation to receive instruction in moral and religious philosophy the reason for the requirement is found in the increasingly acute clashes between conflicting ethical and reli gious ideas and in the resultant de mands upon educated men for spir itual as well as technical leader ship it is the purpose of such instruc tion to acquaint the student with what may impartially be considered the best thought in this field in or der that they may be enabled criti cally to construct clarify and en rich a philosophy of life of their own there is no attempt to force a religious mood upon the student university directory out early week ed the scheduling of some of le high's harder football opponents walter e okeson treasurer of the university and commissioner for the selection of eastern football offi cials disclosed recently this was revealed when he and j g petrikin graduate manager of athletics were asked to explain the university's policy on scheduling football games despite the mediocre success of this year's team lehigh has already announced the addition of columbia in 1932 and harvard in 1933 no further information as to our opponents will be given at present by the board of control of ath letics although the schedule for 1932 is believed complete and that of 1933 almost so we feel that is is better for the other colleges to announce the games mr petrikin explained mr okeson further clarified his explanation of some of the games on lehigh's schedule take columbia for instance he said when we first started ne gotiations with them last year they were not really out of our class they had been defeated and no one expected them to be strong enough to defeat dartmouth 19-6 as they did this season brown too was an exception at the time of the inception of the gates plan last year athletics at the university of pennsylvania were in a ferment with no one in real authority uncertain as to whether we could arrange a game with them for this season we were forced to schedule brown to insure a good team for that section of the schedule finally perm also arrang ed a game and were were left with two hard games in succession mr okeson further admitted that lehigh scheduled more big-college teams than almost any other school of its football caliber in this sector j g petrikin graduate manager of athletics stated that it is my personal opinion that the members of the football squad would rather lose a creditable game to one of the bigger colleges than defeat a small college whose reputation means nothing to lehigh students or to the public in general although we are certain that the alumni approve our present ratio of hard and easy games we realize that student opinion is the most important factor in the selection of our opponents this from mr pet rikin he also pointed out that even by scheduling easier teams lehigh could not be assured of winning i cannot think of any college which has at least one-third of le high's enrollment of which we can be absolutely sure of beating mr okeson also subscribed to this statement explaining that the general average of college football was higher in pennsylvania than in any other state in the country lehigh's graduate manager also pointed out that the financial end must be considered if our gate re ceipts dropped very much he stat ed it might be necessary to drop some of the sports for which foot ball is largely paying is believed by some to be the largest women plat form speaker in the east the delay of an important let ter in a small connecticut post of fice gave princeton university a distinguished graduate who later became its president according to family napers recently discovered the graduate and recipient of the letter was the rev ashbel green eighth president of princeton the documents revealed that the late president green wrote to a friend in new haven conn for in formation about yale he waited patiently for the reply and after several weeks abandoned hope meanwhile a friend of the family proposed princeton which was ap parently pleasing and young green matriculated at nassau hall two weeks after he had left home the letter from new haven arrived it had been lying in a country post office for three weeks after becoming the president of princeton reverend green referred to the peculiar manner in which he had chosen his college in a letter to his son he explained it thus had i received the letter sea sonably i certainly would have chosen yale all of which goes to prove my pomt — that my entire life has taken its complexion and its course from the university which i attended and later became so inti mate with god often assigns our allotment in this world not only without our contrivance but even in opposition to it and the disappoint ment of our fondest hopes prof john dewey of columbia university who delivered the com mencement address here last june and is author of numerous books on ethics and social problems believes tat for the first time in history there is a promise that universal education will become a fact and not a dream on paper dr dewey told this to listeners of weaf sunday evening in his address second of the men of america series the columbia professor is a recognized education al authority believing education to be the basis of civilization dr dewey said unless education undergoes great transformations and prepares citizens to deal effectively with pre sent-day and anticipated problems our civilization may collapse schools he said must meet new forces which may wreck us unless they are intelligently regulated and employed cites growth of schools the philosopher after citing the phenomenal growth in schools and school registration in the past gen eration warned great as have been the changes in our educational sys tem in the past 100 years and es pecially in the past 30 s they are nevertheless slight in comparison universal education no longer dream says columbia professor with those which must be undertak en in the next generation how dr dewey asked can education stand still when society itself is rapidly changing under our very eyes the sense of unsolved social problems is all about us criticizes schools criticizing the schools as back ward and devoid of initiative dr dewey said " they have fought shy of adopting into their aims and methods enough of the new forces the forces which determine our life to fit individuals to cope with them mechanical things have sur passed the human mind in develop ment during the past generation ac cording to the columbia professor he said our mechanical devices and processes have gotten far ahead of our capacity to plan and to en joy — ahead of our minds in short although asserting that educa tors must wake up to the trend of present civilization and take cog nizance of the deplorable state of backwardness which characterizes our present system professor dew ey held out some hope and gave some encouragement to the few schools attempting to rouse them
