waiting in line for hours in many cases to be shut out of desired classes news writer lehigh students experienced long lines closed class sections and course conflicts as the 2000/2001 fall semester kicked off with registration last monday many students said they found this semester's registration process to be more problematic than prior semesters students were forced to stand in line for many hours in many cases only to be told that another signature was needed to make any change official lines were so long that many students were still trying to iron out their sched ules after classes had already started brian marvin 02 was one of the many students who waited in line for more than an hour both monday and tuesday 1 don't understand why the registrar does not open for registration more than one day before classes start if they did students would not have to be rushing to get registration material fin ished while classes have already started marvin said bruce correll the registrar and indi vidual in charge of registration proce dures and development agreed that this semester's lines and waiting times were substantially longer and student roster conflicts were extensively greater the normal hour-and-a-half waits at our office increased up to three hour waits correll said we even kept the office open until 7:30 p.m on monday night in order to accommo date as many students as possible with schedule conflicts correll associates this semester's extensive problems with the simultane ous development of a new web-depend able registration system lehigh is testing he assures there will never be another semester with the same degree of confusion and stress once the system is executed this is a transition year between physical registration and our new web system registration correll said he explained that much of the confu sion and schedule conflicts occurred because this was the first semester in which students with drop/add requests could choose their preferred section as long as it was not full in order to change a section for a par ticular course students schedules had to be approved by their advisors and be free of any conflicts after the section change a chain reaction of problems and headaches occurred at the registrar's office as students presented section change and drop/add forms without first verifying that the change would not con flict with already existing courses and that the new section or class did not have a closed class list shannon o'malley 02 experienced a lack of communication between faculty members and the registrar's office when she attempted to switch times for a course section o'malley received permission from her professor to switch section times for a particular class however when she arrived at the registrar's office she was notified that the section she wanted was already at its maximum capacity after verifying with both her advisor and professor that the section was indeed still open o'malley returned to the registrar's office although the section was supposed to be full she was able to assure them that her professor approved her schedule change the entire process of waiting over an hour in line to just get a section time changed and then running back and forth from the registrar to my professor was frustrating and very time consuming o'malley said many freshmen said they had a great deal of difficulty getting the specific english 001 section lor which they had pre-registered some students even see princeton page 4 see register page a '-. spt^l mountain hawks rodale grant
