reorganization meeting at 4 o'clock this afternoon in the reading room packard laboratory the society plans to arrange sche dules with radio societies of other universities in order to get new ideas in regards to the operation of a proposed local radio station the society formerly had its of fice in the physics building at that time the society operated a short wave length radio station w3aeq since the fire in the physics building over a year ago the society has been inactive two members of the faculty c i knutson instructor in electrical engineering and e c easton graduate assistant in electrical en gineering have volunteered to aid the society the electrical engineering de partment has offered the society a place in packard laboratory masts have been built to facilitate the en tire rebuilding of the old transmit ting apparatus and sufficient power is available for the operation of a powerful broadcasting station membership in the radio society is not restricted to electrical engin eering students anyone interested in radio work is eligible to join lettermen favor plan despite rumors to the contrary no definite action has been taken on the matter of a uniform l award statements from the board of con trol of athletics disclosed yester day however undergraduate mem bers of the board are now deter mining whether student opinion has crystallized since the matter was dropped by arcadia last spring the student members will present their findings at the january meet ing of the board and definite action will be taken at that time unless the suggestion is passed in january it may be four or five years before it is again discussed j g petrikin graduate manager of athletics declared we believe the alumni and fac ulty to be generally in favor of the proposed abolishment of distinction between major and minor letters but we realize that student opin ion after all is the most important factor heretofore student apathy has prevented us from accurately determining their perference but we hope to do so before the jan uary meeting a uniform l for all athletic awards has been suggested re peatedly by alumni during the past five years according to mr petri kin when referred to arcadia last year the question was tabled with out action however a vote of all major l wearers showed them to be decidedly in favor of abol ishing the distinction between sports this vote came so late in the year that no action could be taken there is no particular hurry necessary this year in making a de cision mr petrikin stated even if passed it would be impossible to put the change into effect until next year so that our decision in jan uary will be in plenty of time another suggestion which has been received according to mr petrikin is the awarding of a dis tinctive sweater to team captains for example a brown sweater with a white l would be awarded to captains and all other lettermen would receive a white sweater with a brown l new refrigerator is prod uct of the york mach inery corporation the new 10,000 refrigerating unit of the packard laboratory received its preliminary tests last friday and is to receive its final acceptance tests today this plant is one of the principal units of equipment in the laboratory the machine is a pro duct of the york ice machinery corporation the installation consists of two compressors with a capacity for five tons of refrigeration each that is each machine can produce five tons of ice in 24 hours the com pressors condense carbon dioxide and ammonia gases which are sent to the coils of the cold box this box is made up of a vestibule and the cold box proper both of which are insulated by cork in the cold box whose capacity is i,ooß'cubic feet the temperature can be maintained at 50 degrees be low zero fahrenheit for an inde finite interval of time in the imme diate future this low temperature will be used for tests on the freez ing of concrete and the quick freez ing of foods prof m c stuart acting head of the department of mechanical engineering stated that the refrigerator can be used for all work necessitating low tempera tures and that the plant is available to all departments for the execution of their research work he further stated that he hopes other depart ments will use the machine iron arc welds tested in lab union collects used clothing book by harris now published donations will be distributed among bethlehem's needy treats with factors other than intelligence in stu dent grades research fellows investigate high current carrying electrodes prof edward n rockwell head of the civil engineering department at lafayette will speak on the classic engineering failure in an open lecture at 8 p m thursday in packard auditorium the lecture will deal with the failure of the quebec bridge and the ethics of professional engineer ing professor rockwell was graduat ed from worcester polytechnic in stitute in 1890 and has been asso ciated with tufts college rutgers university and lafayette college as well as having had practical exper ience with ten firms on over 20 ma jor construction jobs he is a mem ber of phi beta kappa sigma xi lambda chi american society of chemical engineers american as sociation of engineers and four other promient engineering associa tions the lecture is sponsored by the civil engineering society refresh ments will be colleges were also pre sent the dances will be continued regularly every friday evening the advantages of the new light ning - proof transformer recently developed by the westinghouse electric and manufacturing com pany were enumerated in detail by h c putnam manager of the westinghouse transformer engin eering department at the regular monthly meeting of the american institute of electrical engineers approximately 100 members con vened in the main dining room of hotel altamont in hazleton according to mr putnam it is practically impossible to damage the transformer by lightning pro vided it is properly installed and coordinated with the transmission line the feature of the design is to eliminate surface leakage in the insulation and provide for a uniform distribution of surge voltage throughout the windings other types of transformers had a great deal of surface leakage as a result of which the insulation was destroy ed when lightning struck it mr putnam concluded his talk by describing to the society various tests which the westinghouse com pany had performed on this new type of transformer for the con solidated light and power com pany of baltimore md in its experimental shops located at sha ron pa describes tests the tests were conducted on the transformer by means of an arti ficial lightning generator capable of delivering 2,500,000 volts a bolt of lightning varies in intensity from 10 to 15 million volts but by the time that it reaches the trans former it is greatly reduced should it strike the transformer directly which is seldom the case it would do serious damage this artificial lightning generator simulates nat ural lightning as is indicated by means of a oscillagraph officers in the society for the coming year include the following morland king lafayette chairman n s hibshman lehigh vice chairman and s s seyfert lehigh chairman of meetings and letters - the lehigh men at the meeting included profs n s hibshman and a r miller and electrical in philadel phia the university of pennsylvania has donated the use of franklin field for the contest decision to play a post-season game was made by the players themselves last thursday and perm state was selected as the op ponent late yesterday president richards feeling that the players should not be required to give up their thanksgiving va cation unless they so desired in sisted on the team's approval before allowing the game to be scheduled shortly after walter okeson had outlined the plan on thursday the players went into a huddle and un animously voted in its favor will aid relief plan post-season charity games have been suggested as means of secur ing funds for unemployment relief by owen d young chairman of president hoover's relief commis sion numerous other colleges have or are making arrangements to play games similar to the le high-penn state contest mr okeson said that arrange ments to play perm state are com pleted and that president gates of the university of pennsylvania had offered franklin field to president richards free of charge this offer will doubtless be accepted mr okeson went on to say the min or details are not yet completed owing to the short notice but the game will probably be popularly priced with the majority of the seats unreserved to be sold for about 1.00 the proceeds of the game will be split two ways half going tp the president of each insti tution to be donated as he sees fit lehigh's portion of the proceeds will probably go to the unemploy ed in bethlehem this quick decision of the lehigh players means that the students on the team must forego their thanks giving vacation the team will be forced to remain at the college and keep training tate satisfied with game coach austie tate when inter viewed last evening made the fol lowing statement i'm very much pleased that lehigh is to play perm state at the post-season game because the athletic policy in force at peun state is exactly the same as at lehigh and the match is very fair the lehigh perm state games in the past were bitterly fought battles and both teams fought to the last minute it was not uncom mon for the losing team to leave the field crying the sportsmanship of the perm state men was always of the best and it is going to be a good battle when asked wheth er he thought lehigh would win he replied that although the team is showing gradual improvement they must do better than they have done in past games to bring victory to lehigh although lehigh and perm state have not played foot ball in a number of years they have been opponents in other athletic contests president richards declared that he had nothing to say but he re marked that i am pleased and proud to see my boys respond so quickly and so unanimously in such an emergency faculty dramatists to read field god the field god by paul green will be read by the faculty dra matic club tomorrow evening at the home of prof and mrs j l graham 37 e church street electrical engineer ing department previously the highest current for any arc has been only 30 amperes higher currents than this burning the electrodes away too quickly to make their use practical e c eas ton james ward packard research fellow in electrical engineering and f b lucas henry marison bylessby research fellow are now able to pass a current of 200 am peres between iron arcs without burning them away momentary shots of current make this possible this experiment is being carried on at the request of the american institute of electrical engineers which has asked the electrical en gineering department to investigate as thoroughly as possible the tran sient phenomena in welding genera tion at the present time the graduate students of the department outnum ber the seniors taking the electrical engineering course there being only 12 seniors compared to 18 gradu ate students in the department sydney m brown professor of european history spoke on feu dal society in medieval difficult for anyone not accustomed to them to pronounce so the moravians short ened the name to lecha this word is still prevalent in the con versation of the pennsylvania dutch english change to lehigh when english speaking inhabi tants arrived in this district the name lecha had no greater ap peal to them than the longer indian name lechauwekink had to the early moravians the english set tlers adopted the smoother word lehigh this name in its present form is unfortunately a corruption or an abbreviation of the original indian name and conveys no spe cial meaning asa packer one of the richest men of jiis time who made his for tune on the lehigh canal and the lehigh valley railroad favored the adoption of this name when he ap propriated money for the founding of a university in the lehigh val ley lehigh is from indian name a corruption of lechauwekink does the name lechauwekink ' mean anything to you or does the pennsylvania dutch expression lecha signify anything further perhaps not but both have a direct bearing on the derivation of the word lehigh lehigh was first adopted by english speaking settlers who pre ferred this to the moravian expres sion lecha which had been adopted earlier in preference to lechauwekink used by the del aware indian tribe years ago even before the found ing of bethlehem dec 24 1741 by moravian settlers delaware in dians in their journey through their country were forced to cross the river now known as the lehigh from the river bank many trails forked to the north and west and so the delawares called the river lechauwekink would be impossible to put the change into effect until next year so that our decision in jan uary will be in plenty of time another suggestion which has been received according to mr petrikin is the awarding of a dis tinctive sweater to team captains for example a brown sweater with a white l would be awarded to captains and all other lettermen would receive a white sweater with a brown l new refrigerator is prod uct of the york mach inery corporation the new 10,000 refrigerating unit of the packard laboratory received its preliminary tests last friday and is to receive its final acceptance tests today this plant is one of the principal units of equipment in the laboratory the machine is a pro duct of the york ice machinery corporation the installation consists of two compressors with a capacity for five tons of refrigeration each that is each machine can produce five tons of ice in 24 hours the com pressors condense carbon dioxide and ammonia gases which are sent to the coils of the cold box this box is made up of a vestibule and the cold box proper both of which are insulated by cork in the cold box whose capacity is i,ooß'cubic feet the temperature can be maintained at 50 degrees be low zero fahrenheit for an inde finite interval of time in the imme diate future this low temperature will be used for tests on the freez ing of concrete and the quick freez ing of foods prof m c stuart acting head of the department of mechanical engineering stated that the refrigerator can be used for all work necessitating low tempera tures and that the plant is available to all departments for the execution of their research work he further stated that he hopes other depart ments will use the machine iron arc welds tested in lab union collects used clothing from the surrounding colleges were also pre sent the dances will be continued regularly every friday evening the advantages of the new light ning - proof transformer recently developed by the westinghouse electric and manufacturing com pany were enumerated in detail by h c putnam manager of the westinghouse transformer engin eering department at the regular monthly meeting of the american institute of electrical engineers approximately 100 members con vened in the main dining room of hotel altamont in hazleton according to mr putnam it is practically impossible to damage the transformer by lightning pro vided it is properly installed and coordinated with the transmission line the feature of the design is to eliminate surface leakage in the insulation and provide for a uniform distribution of surge voltage throughout the windings other types of transformers had a great deal of surface leakage as a result of which the insulation was destroy ed when lightning struck it mr putnam concluded his talk by describing to the society various tests which the westinghouse com pany had performed on this new type of transformer for the con solidated light and power com pany of baltimore md in its experimental shops located at sha ron pa describes tests the tests were conducted on the transformer by means of an arti ficial lightning generator capable of delivering 2,500,000 volts a bolt of lightning varies in intensity from 10 to 15 million volts but by the time that it reaches the trans former it is greatly reduced should it strike the transformer directly which is seldom the case it would do serious damage this artificial lightning generator simulates nat ural lightning as is indicated by means of a oscillagraph officers in the society for the coming last thursday and perm state was selected as the op ponent late yesterday president richards feeling that the players should not be required to give up their thanksgiving va cation unless they so desired in sisted on the team's approval before allowing the game to be scheduled shortly after walter okeson had outlined the plan on thursday the players went into a huddle and un animously voted in numerous other colleges have or are making arrangements to play games similar to the le high-penn state contest mr okeson said that arrange ments to play perm state are com pleted and that president gates of the university of pennsylvania had offered franklin field to president richards free of charge this offer will doubtless be accepted mr okeson went on to say the min or details are not yet completed owing to the short notice but the game will probably be popularly priced with the majority of the seats unreserved to be sold for about 1.00 the proceeds of the game will be split two ways half going tp the president of each insti tution to be donated as he sees fit lehigh's portion of the proceeds will probably go to the unemploy ed in bethlehem this quick decision of the lehigh inter viewed last evening made the fol lowing statement i'm very much pleased that lehigh is to play perm state at the post-season game because the athletic policy in force at peun state is exactly the same as at lehigh and the match is very fair the lehigh perm state games in the past were bitterly fought battles and both teams fought to the last minute it was not uncom mon for the losing team to leave the field crying the sportsmanship of the perm state men was always of the best and it is going to be a good battle when asked wheth er he thought lehigh would win he replied that although the team is showing gradual improvement they must do better than they have done in past games to bring victory to lehigh although lehigh and perm state have not played foot ball in a number of years they have been opponents in other athletic contests president richards declared that he had nothing to say but he re marked that i am pleased and proud to see my boys respond so quickly and so very difficult for anyone not accustomed to them to pronounce so the moravians short ened the name to lecha this word is still prevalent in the con versation of the pennsylvania dutch english change to lehigh when english speaking inhabi tants arrived in this district the name lecha had no greater ap peal to them than the longer indian name lechauwekink had to the early moravians the english set tlers adopted the smoother word lehigh this name in its present form is unfortunately a corruption or an abbreviation of the original indian name and conveys no spe cial meaning asa packer one of the richest men of jiis time who made his for tune on the lehigh canal and the lehigh valley railroad favored the adoption of this name when he ap propriated money for the founding of a university in the lehigh val ley lehigh is from indian name a corruption of lechauwekink does the name lechauwekink ' mean anything to you or does the pennsylvania dutch expression lecha signify anything further perhaps not but both have a direct bearing on the derivation of the word lehigh lehigh was first adopted by english speaking settlers who pre ferred this to the moravian expres sion lecha which had been adopted earlier in preference to lechauwekink used by the del aware indian tribe years ago even before the found ing of bethlehem dec 24 1741 by moravian settlers delaware in dians in their journey through their country were forced to cross the river now known as the lehigh from the river bank many trails forked to the north and west and so the delawares called the river lechauwekink
