the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 116 no 44 friday april 10 2009 all the lehigh news first salvaged governor's school looks ahead by kimberly osborn the pennsylvania school for global entrepreneurship a by-product of the pennsylvania governor's school is on its way to having its first success ful summer without funding from the state previously known as the pennsylva nia governor's school for global en trepreneurship the program has been hosted every year on lehigh's campus since 2001 the newly titled program will re main at lehigh however it will be paid for by the lacocca institute in stead of by the state the program will also be forced to charge some students to attend the pro gram for the first time sixty-four pennsylvania students and 12 international students plan to participate this year trisha alexy director of the pennsylvania school for global entrepreneurship said the student interest level was unaf fected by the change in the program she said each student will pay 2,950 to at tend the five-week program the cost will cover students food housing tuition activities field trips and in-program transportation alexy said the program will offer 10 scholar ships to students who cannot afford a scoop on senate b&wphoto by mattbreitel prospective student senators visited the cup to pick up nomination forms wednesday the students were treated to a free cup of ice cream gift committee forming for 2010 by john gilpatrick while the class of 2009 is spreading the word about the senior class gift the class of 2010 held an information session tuesday to find students interested in joining the next senior class gift committee the senior class gift was started by the class of 1928 as an endowed scholarship over the years some classes decided to stray from this and donate toward tangible things around campus such as lucy's cafe in linderman and the asa packer statue outside the alumni memorial building but the classes of 2009 and 2010 have decided to go back to creating an endowed scholarship in their names the goal of the endowed scholarship is to give future students the same opportuni ties we've had said class of 2010 president jack meehan the information session was intended to educate students about giving and find students who are interested in taking on a bigger role in the process next year about 10 students which will be the approximate size of the committee have expressed interest according to nancy merritt 04 director of student and young three local restaurants undergo major changes by rosemary saveri lindsay o'brien and anya bingler one local restaurant is being renovat ed another is set to open up soon while a third has closed down altogether the lehigh pub is on pace to open for business april 17 on the corner of new and fourth streets the former lo cation of bridge works restaurant the name change coincided with a change in ownership while bridge works was more of a restaurant the new owner aims to change the space to have a pub-like atmosphere the transformation in atmosphere and the pub's prime location could have the potential to become a popular night time hang out some students said they are very ex cited about the change i think it's great that the owner wants to create a place where the stu dents will enjoy themselves at night eric wasserman 10 said i hear a lot of complaints that there aren't enough things to do near campus and this will provide older students with a new bar and scene which will be a nice breather from the typical hang outs alex howie 09 said it's good for students to have somewhere to go that's so close to campus it sounds like the lehigh pub has the potential to become the new major bar for upperclassmen to attend she said students go green over earth week by liz martinez despite the official holiday falling on april 22 lehigh will be celebrating earth day all of next week spreading awareness about the environment through several events and initiatives organized by eco-conscious groups on campus events will commence tuesday with a three-mile earth day run beginning at 4:10 p.m in front of williams hall any student can participate by contacting the environmen tal initiative office said brenna bowman 10 free t-shirts designed by andrew dealmagro 10 will be handed out at the run president alice gast will sign the lehigh climate com mitment and give a speech on wednesday said dork sahagian professor and director of the environmental initiative rather than signing a generic vague commitment we designed our own tailored to lehigh sahagian said in the past he said lehigh has been reluctant to commit to the generic agreement president gast is really trying to move lehigh in a sus tainable direction sahagian said following the signing tables and vendors will be set up on the uc front lawn if it rains the event will be moved to grace hall from 11 a.m to 4 p.m said christina bianco 09 one of the week's coordinators students will showcase their projects concerning the environment and lehigh the band scott mckenna will be playing and the students will be able to vote in the environmental photography contest bianco said she encourages students to have lunch outside that day and to participate in the earth day activities green kleen a company that cleans cars without us ing water will set up a table and distribute recycled items they will also be collecting electronics to recycle them bowman said it is important for students to realize they are part of a greater community bowman said wednesday at 7 p.m lehigh will host the panel and lecture is there any hope for kenya's maasai in lin derman 200 several members of the maasai tribe will speak about the environmental changes that impacted their community even though they didn't create the issues themselves saha gian said there will be a showing of the film garbage in whita ker 303 thursday at 7 p.m which will depict how the ex cess of garbage has impacted the environment on friday bianco said there will be an earth week themed make-and-take in lamberton where students will be able to decorate flowerpots and plant seeds dining services will follow their own initiatives bianco said on monday they will promote an eco-container that is an alternative to the to-go foam containers jennifer see gift page 2 see
