night in the packard laboratory mr burns is the testing engineer for the mack international motor truck corporation whose main as sembly plant is located in allen town it is at this plant that the large mack trucks and buses are assembled trend toward large units in comparing the automotive electrical units with the larger pow er station units mr burns said the present trend in electricity is to large units modern hydro-elec tric developements are utilizing gen erators of the highest practicable capacity an inspection of the pres ent day power station finds the ma chinery clean and accessible and receiving the best of intelligent care in contrast with these ideal con ditions under which the power sta tions function note the things which automotive electrical apparatus must be built to withstand the generator in the automobile must be compact it must work under high temperatures and under coa ditions of vibration where it is ex posed to dirt oil gasoline and wa ter it must perform its duty of charging the cars storage battery notwithstanding the wide variations in speed to which it is subject the manufacturing of machines to op erate under these adverse conditions includes the use of the best mater ials and such proportioning as will allow them to do their work in the smallest possible space slides illustrate lecture slides and diagrams of various sorts were used to illustrate the lec ture pictures were shown of the various types of buses built by the mack international company start ing with the earliest type and end ing with the very latest develop councilor field god by paul green will be discussed at first meeting explanation of the x-ray meth od of determining 7 the authenticity of pictures and paintings used in the research laboratory of the lou vre museum in paris was recently offered by dr h m ullmann head of the department of chemistry this laboratory which opened wednesday is the world's first lab oratory for the scientific study of painting it's a great thing said profes sor ullmann commenting on the method originated by fernando pe rez argentine ambassador to italy and dr carlos mainini professor of biology at the university of beunos aires this research work is wel worth while an oblique ray is directed at the picture in question and the painting is photo graphed such oblique lighting commonly used to examine the sur face of metals reveals the techni que and therefore the psychology of the painter this method will be a great help in establishing the authenticity of pictures manuscripts are examined suppose someone offered an or iginal volume of shakespeare for sale professor ullmann contin ued if there's some doubt as to its authenticity it could be inves tigated in this way loss of thou sands of dollars could be avoided the new x-ray method shows the way the artist uses his brush the choice he makes of colors and how he achieves the effects of chia roscuro it also brings forth the ar tists fingerprints by use of biolo gical chemical photographic spec troscopic and radioscopic methods the exact date of the pictures and whether they have been restored may be determined experiments were conducted on 1,300 canvasses of old and modern artists and the results were pre sented to the directors of the lou vre who established the laboratory o.d.k lists called for seniors seeking election to omi cron delta nounced that the annual fall elec tion of three men to the society should take place within the next ten days arcadia will vote on the reform bill at its next meeting it was found that in last year's publication of the reform measures several items were omitted and others were stated in an ambigious manner the resolution omitted was that a new organization to be known as the l club be or ganized consisting of all the letter men in the university so that the abolition of the in terfraternity council and the result ing duties imposed on arcadia should not be misunderstood by th student body omicron delta kap pa revised this section of the re form recommendations politics ruled out the society points out that cer tain articles in the bill have been included to spread the various du ties vian college for women the sen ior class of liberty high school and nurses from both st luke's and allentown hospitals strong men have taken to weep ing like babies heartbroken moth ers toss their infant children from housetops and why like a bolt out of the blue comes an announce ment from people who should know people who count people who think and it is an announce ment to the effect that beautiful women are not dumb never since santa claus was shown up as the hireling of a progressive depart ment store has such consternation seized the ranks of our upper set . . . not to mention our college men and from the same source of infor mation comes another batch of ni troglycerine ministers sons say they do not as a rule go wrong nor are brilliant persons especially subject to nervous breakdowns and you can't attract a person's at tention by gazing at the back of his or her head as a matter of fact experiments at stanford col lege reads the report have shown that the concentrated gaze of a hundred persons on another person has failed to affect that person no less an authority than albert edward wiggam is responsible for the assertion that beautiful women are not dumb a fallacy which has been in the public mind for many years keeness of mind and beauty ac beautiful girls not dumb declares albert wiggam cording to this authority very oft en go hand in hand and because a girl stands in the second row of mr carrol's pulchitrudinous display current at one of the new york theatres it does not mean that she cannot add up the cost of a fur coat and a diamond necklace ex periments have proved this to be true although such experiments were not carried out by mr wig gam if reports be correct just as it is difficult to tell a book by its cover so it is impos sible to judge a person's character by his face mr wiggam goes on to say in speaking of the current practice of large concerns of hir ing personnel managers to judge applicants for positions the report says there are thousands of men employed by large corporations who try to judge the character of employees by studying their faces it has been proved conclusively that a man's character has nothing to do with his face on a recent casion 88 such character readers were asked to judge a group of col lege students male and female all the subjects were clad alike only three of the 88 experts could tell which was a young man and which was a young women and every one of them disagreed on what charac ters the faces showed how does lehigh news get to the metropolitan papers what form of grapevine telegraph enables john smith 87 to learn in 24 hours every item of importance that oc curs on the lehigh campus the answer to both questions is it's a system and it's a system as thor oughly organized and as carefully watched as any department of the entire university most of the lehtgh news eman ates from an office on the second floor of the administration building an office with which most lehigh students are not as yet familiar in this office and occupying a large part of it is the lehigh news bu reau presided over by john max well a lehigh graduated and form er editor in chief of the brown and white it is mr maxwell's job as public relation's counsel for the university to prepare and distribute any items of news concerning le high which he deems of interest to outsiders and alumni working with him is a staff of six girls who at tend to all the routine matters of preparing the stories or copy as the newspapers call them daily this copy is sent to more than 200 newspapers on the atlantic sea board sometimes the stories are accompanied by photographs of prominent men on the campus prominent athletes or well-known visitors to the university papers get lehigh news through bureau's system mr maxwell's job is not an easy one he must know just what sort of news is best suited for each of the papers with which he corres ponds a newspaper of one type will be most interested perhaps in athletics a second in scientific de velopments a third will want only news of students local to their cir culation during the football sea son mr maxwell must work on schedule allowing so much time each day to the various tasks which must be done he is to be seen al most every afternoon on the foot ball field snapping pictures of the team in action getting individual poses of some recent sensation or photographing some player whose hometown newspaper believes him a wonder and who played on the local high school team but mr maxwell is not respon sible for all the news which reaches the newspapers some of the largest metropolitan dailies retain their own correspondents in this vicinity whose business it is to inform them of what is going on and who are subject to the call of those news papers when anything of excep tional importance occurs news of this type differs from news sent out by mr maxwell in that it is usally wired to the papers whereas mr maxwell with his imposing list of 20q to take care of must be content to mail his copy brown and white bethlehem pa friday october 16 1931 penn tickets on sale until 9 a m saturday smith ballew signs to play at senior the field of electricity are constantly cantributing towards the enchance ment of electrical systems used in automotive vehicles was stressed by mr g a burns in his lecture to the electrical engineering society meeting held last night in the packard laboratory mr burns is the testing engineer for the mack international motor truck corporation whose main as sembly plant is located in allen town it is at this plant that the large mack trucks and buses are assembled trend toward large units in comparing the automotive electrical units with the larger pow er station units mr burns said the present trend in electricity is to large units modern hydro-elec tric developements are utilizing gen erators of the highest practicable capacity an inspection of the pres ent day power station finds the ma chinery clean and accessible and receiving the best of intelligent care in contrast with these ideal con ditions under which the power sta tions function note the things which automotive electrical apparatus must be built to withstand the generator in the automobile must be compact it must work under high temperatures and under coa ditions of vibration where it is ex posed to dirt oil gasoline and wa ter it must perform its duty of charging the cars storage battery notwithstanding the wide variations in speed to which it is subject the manufacturing of machines to op erate under these adverse conditions includes the use of the best mater ials and such proportioning as will allow them to do their work in the smallest possible space slides illustrate lecture slides and diagrams of various sorts were used to illustrate the lec ture pictures were shown of the various types of buses built by the mack international company start ing with the earliest type and end ing with the very latest develop ments after his lecture mr burns dis played various pieces of apparatus and demonstrated the practical use of these appliances he also an swered numerous questions which were asked research laboratory of the lou vre museum in paris was recently offered by dr h m ullmann head of the department of chemistry this laboratory which opened wednesday is the world's first lab oratory for the scientific study of painting it's a great thing said profes sor ullmann commenting on the method originated by fernando pe rez argentine ambassador to italy and dr carlos mainini professor of biology at the university of beunos aires this research work is wel worth while an oblique ray is directed at the picture in question and the painting is photo graphed such oblique lighting commonly used to examine the sur face of metals reveals the techni que and therefore the psychology of the painter this method will be a great help in establishing the authenticity of pictures manuscripts are examined suppose someone offered an or iginal volume of shakespeare for sale professor ullmann contin ued if there's some doubt as to its authenticity it could be inves tigated in this way loss of thou sands of dollars could be avoided the new x-ray method shows the way the artist uses his brush the choice he makes of colors and how he achieves the effects of chia roscuro it also brings forth the ar tists fingerprints by use of biolo gical chemical photographic spec troscopic and radioscopic methods the exact date of the pictures and whether they have been restored may be determined experiments were conducted on 1,300 canvasses of old and modern artists and the results were pre sented to the directors of the lou vre who established the laboratory o.d.k lists called for seniors at the phi delta th«ta fraternity to round out the measures for presentation to arcadia besides discussing the reform bill the society decided that the orn^cron delta kappa by-laws be revised in the near future and an nounced that the annual fall elec tion of three men to the society should take place within the next ten days arcadia will vote on the reform bill at its next meeting it was found that in last year's publication of the reform measures several items were omitted and others were stated in an ambigious manner the resolution omitted was that a new organization to be known as the l club be or ganized consisting of all the letter men in the university so that the abolition of the in terfraternity council and the result ing duties imposed on arcadia should not be misunderstood by th student body omicron delta kap pa revised this section of the re form recommendations politics ruled out the society points out that cer tain articles in the bill have been included to spread the various du ties of arcadia among more men and thus eliminate the chance of politics swaying that body also the activities of each man will be so limited that too much power will not be concentrated in the hands of a few the abolition of phi club and cy anide will leave sophomores and juniors without distinction except that gained in athletic or publica tion lines to relieve this situation the l club has been proposed this will provide suitable recogni tion for all men winning a letter in a varsity sport «> new society proposed the brown key society would also fill an important place in ath vian college for women the sen ior class of liberty high school and nurses from both st luke's and allentown hospitals strong men have taken to weep ing like babies heartbroken moth ers toss their infant children from housetops and why like a bolt out of the blue comes an announce ment from people who should know people who count people who think and it is an announce ment to the effect that beautiful women are not dumb never since santa claus was shown up as the hireling of a progressive depart ment store has such consternation seized the ranks of our upper set . . . not to mention our college men and from the same source of infor mation comes another batch of ni troglycerine ministers sons say they do not as a rule go wrong nor are brilliant persons especially subject to nervous breakdowns and you can't attract a person's at tention by gazing at the back of his or her head as a matter of fact experiments at stanford col lege reads the report have shown that the concentrated gaze of a hundred persons on another person has failed to affect that person no less an authority than albert edward wiggam is responsible for the assertion that beautiful women are not dumb a fallacy which has been in the public mind for many years keeness of mind and beauty ac beautiful girls not dumb declares albert wiggam cording to this authority very oft en go hand in hand and because a girl stands in the second row of mr carrol's pulchitrudinous display current at one of the new york theatres it does not mean that she cannot add up the cost of a fur coat and a diamond necklace ex periments have proved this to be true although such experiments were not carried out by mr wig gam if reports be correct just as it is difficult to tell a book by its cover so it is impos sible to judge a person's character by his face mr wiggam goes on to say in speaking of the current practice of large concerns of hir ing personnel managers to judge applicants for positions the report says there are thousands of men employed by large corporations who try to judge the character of employees by studying their faces it has been proved conclusively that a man's character has nothing to do with his face on a recent casion 88 such character readers were asked to judge a group of col lege students male and female all the subjects were clad alike only three of the 88 experts could tell which was a young man and which was a young women and every one of them disagreed on what charac ters the faces showed how does lehigh news get to the metropolitan papers what form of grapevine telegraph enables john smith 87 to learn in 24 hours every item of importance that oc curs on the lehigh campus the answer to both questions is it's a system and it's a system as thor oughly organized and as carefully watched as any department of the entire university most of the lehtgh news eman ates from an office on the second floor of the administration building an office with which most lehigh students are not as yet familiar in this office and occupying a large part of it is the lehigh news bu reau presided over by john max well a lehigh graduated and form er editor in chief of the brown and white it is mr maxwell's job as public relation's counsel for the university to prepare and distribute any items of news concerning le high which he deems of interest to outsiders and alumni working with him is a staff of six girls who at tend to all the routine matters of preparing the stories or copy as the newspapers call them daily this copy is sent to more than 200 newspapers on the atlantic sea board sometimes the stories are accompanied by photographs of prominent men on the campus prominent athletes or well-known visitors to the university papers get lehigh news through bureau's system mr maxwell's job is not an easy one he must know just what sort of news is best suited for each of the papers with which he corres ponds a newspaper of one type will be most interested perhaps in athletics a second in scientific de velopments a third will want only news of students local to their cir culation during the football sea son mr maxwell must work on schedule allowing so much time each day to the various tasks which must be done he is to be seen al most every afternoon on the foot ball field snapping pictures of the team in action getting individual poses of some recent sensation or photographing some player whose hometown newspaper believes him a wonder and who played on the local high school team but mr maxwell is not respon sible for all the news which reaches the newspapers some of the largest metropolitan dailies retain their own correspondents in this vicinity whose business it is to inform them of what is going on and who are subject to the call of those news papers when anything of excep tional importance occurs news of this type differs from news sent out by mr maxwell in that it is usally wired to the papers whereas mr maxwell with his imposing list of 20q to take care of must be content to mail his copy brown and white bethlehem pa friday october 16 1931 penn tickets on sale until 9 a m saturday smith ballew signs to play at senior
