the brown and white vol 116 no 39 lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 tuesday march 24 2009 all the lehigh news first survey shows hookah use increasing at local colleges by anya bingler an online survey sponsored by the bethlehem health bureau in partnership with the allentown health bureau showed an upward trend in hoo kah smoking on college campuses in the lehigh valley the two health bureaus are targeting the cam puses of lehigh university moravian college and muhlenberg college the survey included questions about the increase of hookah use level of addictiveness resulting harmful effects and use of other tobacco products hookah is a long water pipe usually used to smoke fruit-flavored tobacco unknown to many users smoking hookah is associated with several health risks according to a study done by tobaccofreeu.org hookah smoke contains some of the same contaminants as ciga rette smoke such as carbon monoxide nicotine tar and heavy metals the study also showed nicotine dependence can result from smoking hookah despite the com mon belief that it is not addictive the water mois ture from the hookah makes inhaling the smoke less irritating possibly confusing users about its effects before conducting this survey the health bu reaus had assembled two focus-research groups in november 2008 the purpose of this follow-up survey was to de termine prevalence rates knowledge and attitudes towards hookah use other similar studies have shown hookah use on college campuses seems to be getting more popular and widespread rejuvenated newman hall opens on carlton avenue by megan hanks newman hall the catholic student center has moved from its home on taylor street to a new location just off lehigh's campus and is open for student use on friday march 20 newman hall opened its doors at 417 carlton aye to several administrators including presi dent alice gast the building was recently renovated and stands on the grounds of the university parish of holy ghost although services are still held at lehigh's packard cha pel more masses have been added at the parish family of holy ghost scott wojciechowski 09 vice-president of social activi ties and membership for the newman council said the new hall is phenomenal student space newman hall is a space for all lehigh students regard b&w photo by christopher chew less of religion he said the building's formal opening will be late in april when the bishop of the allentown diocese bishop edward cul len blesses it the event will be followed with a reception newman hall was originally located on carlton avenue in south bethlehem but in the 1970s it was moved onto lehigh's campus where it remained until this year because of church closings in the area last summer the diocese consolidated 27 churches into 10 newman hall was moved back to its original location if lehigh had not moved to university parish of holy ghost the church likely would have been sold said rev wayne killian pastor at the parish family of holy ghost and director of the lehigh university catholic campus the newly-renovated newman hall is opened daily for student use located on carlton avenue the center offers a computer room a lounge area with a pool table and fireplace and a second-floor basketball court lehigh adds google features to offer more storage uses by rosemary saveri lehigh recently implemented google appli cations to its e-mail system allowing students faculty and staff access to google apps products such as google sites google docs google cal endar and gmail these multiple new features can be easily ac cessed by going to www.lehigh.edu/google and entering lehigh usernames and passwords tim foley director of lehigh's library and technology services said the partnership with google will allow lehigh students and faculty an easy way to share and store information after receiving requests from our clients for easy ways to share documents and information we looked into our options and after comparing a few chose google apps as they were simpler to use and easier to set up foley said a lot of schools around the country are using this google apps offers students access to mul tiple new features the e-mail application allows for an essentially unlimited amount six mega bytes of storage space for e-mail messages and other attachments students also have the abil ity to link their lehigh e-mail account to their gmail by forwarding their new messages even alumni have access to this feature after b&w design by christopher chew a screen shot of a google apps page shows how users can customize pages to focus on news class files or just the weather see hookah page 2 see newman page 4 see google page 4 students air their dirty laundry page 7 wrestling team places 28th at nationals page 16 check out b&w videos thebrownandwhite.com
