the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 116 no 38 friday march 20 2009 all the lehigh news first fashion friendly competition for charity b&wphoto by stephen jabaut last thursday delta gamma sorority and theta chi fraternity hosted fashion 4 a cure in lamberton the event raised money for breast cancer and featured a fashion show and a dance team performance hit-and-run leads to brief chase ruined student car by matt brichta both lehigh and bethlehem police responded to a hit and-run on a lehigh student's parked car on webster street saturday night witnesses said megan stoner 10 said in an e-mail that she heard a loud crash outside her bedroom window around 9:30 p.m saturday i first thought i hope that's not my car she said af ter my roommate told me my car had been hit i quickly ran down the stairs and outside to see what happened and to grab the license plate of the car stoner said her 2007 bmw x 3 was halfway on the sidewalk and on top of two parking meters and a lamp post when she came outside the rear side was completely smashed-in the front right side was damaged and the suspect's bumper was next to mine on the ground stoner said there was debris from my car all over the ground joe loguidice 09 said he heard the crash while he was relaxing with friends in a house nearby he and his friends also rushed outside we were unsure whether someone had broken into a car someone got shot or if there was a crash he said loguidice said in an e-mail that he and his friends saw a black jeep grand cherokee with no bumper riding on just the rim of his front right tire attempting to escape down van buren street i was on the phone with the 911 dispatcher at this point he said i was relaying the position of the car to the dis patcher who was repeating all my words to the bethlehem cops on the other end other witnesses at the scene of the accident reported the license plate of the vehicle and a description of its occupants the driver was a white male with a female passenger wit nesses said stoner said witnesses told her the grand cherokee was traveling at safe speeds when it suddenly jerked right and hit her car i called 911 immediately when i got outside she said first-ever spring career fair draws huge turnout by katie karasbz over 300 students attended the first spring career fair tuesday in grace hall although the fair was geared toward college of arts and sciences students looking for jobs in non-profit organizations healthcare and the arts the event was open to students of any major the career fair hosted by the career ser vices office was for all students on campus said christina diggs assistant director of career development whether you are a first-year student who wants to learn more about a particular industry a sophomore who wants to network a junior looking for an internship or a senior or graduate student who is seeking full-time employment a career fair has much to offer diggs said many organizations with positions in arts and sciences need to fill spots immediately and can not wait a few months for a student to graduate diggs said many students in majors such as the liberal arts natural sciences and marketing focus their job searching efforts during the spring semes ter she said the career fair does not only benefit lehigh students diggs said for employers it provides them with an op portunity to meet the bright talent that lehigh has to offer for current or future employment she said not only do the organizations meet with po tential employees but the companies also get an opportunity to network with one another and lehigh faculty staff members diggs said meeting with professors at lehigh allows the companies to make connections for potential research and programming opportunities police chief addresses campus safety by opeyemi akinbamidele edward k shupp chief of lehigh police spoke in linderman library on tuesday about the methods the police department uses to keep students safe lehigh's police department recently applied for a grant to install cameras around campus including near hillside and brodhead avenues lehigh university's police department is accredited by the state of pennsylvania out of the 1,330 police de partments in the state 52 are accredited lehigh is one of two universities in the state that re ceived the recognition in order for a police department to be accredited it must meet all standards set by the state of pennsylvania shupp said we have the best of the best shupp said we do this through training and our change and adapt program each police car has a wireless computer medical aid and a shotgun shupp said every officer is trained to respond to an emergency with a shooter shupp said shupp cited the virginia tech incident when a student shot and killed people on campus while police scrambled to react according to shupp the police couldn't respond in time because the gunman bolted all the doors shut shupp said lehigh police have equip ment in their cars so that no matter what the obstacle is they are prepared shupp said the past weekend at lehigh was the worst weekend he has seen in two to three years there should be no reason why nine people were sent to the hospital he said if we arrested everyone who drank under the age of 21 i'd have to call the troops in iraq to help us that is why we educate while we en force the law lehigh's police always follow up on students even if they are arrested off campus in order to reduce the num ber of repeat offenders shupp said because of the jeanne clery act i am abided by the law to post up crimes committed by the students he said parents don't like it too much but it is my job see crash page 6 see career page 2 see safety page 2
