the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 116 no 37 tuesday march 17 2009 all the lehigh news first technology house to open in former fraternity this fall by deanna mcclafferty the vacant sigma alpha mv fraternity house will be transformed into the technology in society house beginning next year the technology in society house is the newest addition to the live lehigh program which includes global citizen ship green house healthy living music appreciation and substance free housing the new house will include 31 upcoming sophomores and two gryphons who all share an interest in technology carollynn goldenberg 12 will be living in the house next year we have some people that really like computers others that like robotics just new things that are out she said we thought that it would be a really good way to connect a lot of us together founder and community coordinator seth blumenthal b&wphoto by christopher chew 12 said the purpose of the community is to be a niche for people who would like to use either skill or passion for or with technology to make lehigh a better place to live blumenthal said he was surprised when live lehigh contacted him and told him about the decision to house the group in the former sammy house when this process started we didn't expect any sort of place other than a residence hall to live in blumenthal said i told people and they didn't believe me there will be 300,000 invested in renovations for the house blumenthal said the house can hold more occupants than the group's original 21 members they told us get more people to join or we're going to put in another group with you so we decided to recruit more said member samantha mason 12 the former sigma alpha mv fraternity house will be home to the new technology in society house next semester the 31 students and two gryphons who will live there share a common interest in technology governor's school cut by state picked up by lehigh by kim osborn the pa governor's school for global en trepreneurship at lehigh is no longer funded by the state of pennsylvania and has closed lehigh's lacocca institute has since taken over and renamed the program the pa school for global entrepreneurship nine governor's schools existed in penn sylvania each focusing on a different area of study until the department of education cut budgets and told the schools to shut down their programs the governor's schools were five-week summer programs for pennsylvania high school students who were in their sophomore and junior years the pa department of education provided the tuition for each of the students allowing people with various eco nomic situations to apply after a rigorous application process the most elite were accepted to attend their cho sen focus and school the pgsge web site said lehigh hosted and worked with the global entrepreneurship program to arrange classes for the students to take in the college of busi ness and economics the global entrepreneurship differs from the other schools in its integration of interna tional students into the program trisha alexy director of the pa gover nor's school for global entrepreneurship since august 2005 said there are many out standing aspects of the program that make it a unique learning experience pennsylvania students get to experience first-hand different cultures with the inter committee moves forward with globalization by matt stayman in a december 2007 report president alice gast and provost mohamed el-aasser introduced the lehigh com munity to a sweeping plan to globalize the university by 2013 now three semesters into its implementation global lehigh is making steps to work toward its extensive goals the report entitled getting to global lehigh out lined objectives such as recruiting more international students strengthening and expanding programs for inter national experiences abroad and creating a strong interna tional network through the establishment of international hubs in key regions around the globe one of the report's first and most significant impacts was to create the position of vice president for international affairs which was filled by provost mohamed el-aasser in september he will continue to serve as provost until the search for a replacement is completed el-aasser's new role has placed him at the head of the global lehigh steering committee because the goals of global lehigh are so far-reaching the committee's function is largely organizational el-aasser said the office of international affairs is really just provid ing leadership he said the committee includes faculty representing different colleges and departments they are the link between the office and the colleges frank pazzaglia professor of geology and chair of the department of earth and environmental science helped draft getting to global lehigh and is a current member of the global lehigh steering committee said he sees the committee's role as a central hub for ideas from all areas of the university ei-aasser's committee is vetting ideas pazzaglia said we hear from different faculty and say here is a good idea let's move forward with this the members of the committee include faculty from all areas of lehigh in order to increase its power as a uni versity-wide network pazzaglia said he said he is pleased with the enthusiasm with which professors have responded to the mission of global lehigh the process has been very organic he said some times ideas come from people on the committee but many times faculty members from the different colleges come to us bringing in more international students has been a ma jor success of the committee's efforts in its first few semes ters by increasing recruiting efforts
