chairman of the prom committee announced yesterday only 160 votes had been cast at the time the ballot was sche duled to close yesterday this action mr current stated is taken because we do not feel that 160 votes can truly represent the opinion of 1500 students perhaps greater interest will be shown by allowing more time for the stu dents to vote smith ballew with 57 votes and hay kemp with 40 were far head of any other of the nine orchestras on the ballot not a single vote was cast for the bands of charles dorn berger jack pettis or happy felton sixty-five now in lehigh band will draw from personal experiences in his talk to attend all football games except one with brown one of the main topics of discus sion at the first meeting of arcadia last night in drown memorial hall was the new victory song this song was officially repudiated by the body last spring but at this voting the decision fell the other way after some discussion the group voted 50 to prof t edgar shields to print a larger supply of the song to be distributed with an edition of the brown and white it was also decided that a freshman rally would be held to teach all of the new men the words and tunes of the song another interesting discussion was held on the matter of the sen ior blazers last winter there were many complaints as to the price and quality of the jacket and the cloth ing company had promised to im prove the quality and cut the price at this meeting of the arcadia however a suggestion was made and adopted to the effect that the arcadia should receive bids for the current contract to ascertain if the blazers could not be had for less money several smaller matters were also taken up at the meeting everyone received a copy of the o.d.k plan which will be discussed next month due to the paucity of returns the balloting for the senior ball orches tra will be held open until thurs day austy tate made a suggestion to the effect that each living group should endeavor to have its fresh men present at the station when the football team entrains for the brown and perm games the arca diad decided to discuss the letter awards at the next meeting the arcadia also renounced its backing of the founder's day hop which has been officially taken over by the lehigh union the new york lehigh club will entertain high school principals of the new york district thurs day oct 8 with a boat ride will meet later in the month for the purpose of revising the present rushing rules according to the present by laws of the council rushing cannot be discussed at the meetings until after april first many members felt the executive committee should suggest an amendment to this law prominent men received hon orary degrees on this anniversary tomorrow wednesday oct 7 the undergraduate body alumni pleasing personality endeared him self to all those with whom he came into contact the founder of the university died on may 7 1879 and in october of the same year was held the first memorial ceremony from which has grown the custom of celebrating the second wednesday after the opening of school as founder's day this ceremony has continued uninterrupted through the decades with the exception of 1918 when it was abandoned on account of the pressure of war work in recent years it has become the custom to set aside founder's day as a holiday at which time an ad dress by a prominent citizen is made to the assembled student body freshmen and sophomore honors are awarded and degrees conferred later in the day the freshman and sophomore classes vie with one another in football and other sports on founder's day in 1923 max mcconn a.m was installed as dean of the university at the same date william spnecer murray e e was awarder the honorary de gree doctor of engineering jose ramon villalon berry of baltimore dean of john hop kins university and horace mal com westergaard despite the fact that lehigh stu dents have continually criticized the selection of prom orchestras direct vote suggested by arcadia seems to have done little to awaken interest only slightly more than one per cent of the student body voted on the first ballot the students will be unable to grumble this year the prom chair man points out because they will select the orchestra themselves however we want enough of them to vote to make the selection a tru ly representative one ... juniors cast the greatest number of ballots in the first vote forty six of them voted with the other classes ranging from 36 to 40 smith ballew led in all the classes except the sophomore where hal kemp was far ahead of any of town to attend the funeral cer emonies at his father's deathtplace the art exhibit which opened saturday oct 3 in the art gallery of the library will continue until the 18th as announced by profes sor howland this exhibit contains 100 prints of the civil war period many of which are humorous and itneresting the originals of these prints were by currier and ives the prints were obtained after much difficulty by professor how land from the library of congress where the copyrights of them are kept an interesting fact is that when these were first printed they were considered commonplace and were put on the market at a very low price lately however antique collectors have gotten hold of these prints creating such a demand for them that they are only within the reach of the very wealthy fraternity initiates pi kappa alpha initiated the fol lowing men last saturday evening jerome whiteney john p dean edmund poggi and arthur web ber the initiatory ceremony was followed by a banquet at guthsville the band wagons are leaving the lehigh campus no longer are the roads graced with the mamouth cars which have been so evident in past years at least this is the con clusion to be drawn from owner's statements and data of automobile registration they're all leaving the campus you don't see any of the big cadil lacs around any more state carl e kirchman one of the few to re gister a stately old model this sem ester for practical commuting pur poses and real fun however kirch man owns a popular priced road ster he believes that the business depression has caused the more thrifty students to object to the gas consumption of the larger char iots the mighty daniels property of the coxe brothers had become al most legendary on the campus but it too became a victim of economy and was driven with due reverence to the junk yard we made about three to five miles on the gallon states nelson coxe so we traded it in as junk the records of the university seem further to indicate that the smaller and more economic cars are riding in on a wave of popular ity nine makes of the larger cars which were represented on the le students taking coures in english 43 reporting and english 46 copyreading were taken friday af ternoon oct 2 on a tour of inspec tion of the bethlehem globe times publishing co fourth street and brodhead avenue the men followed the progress of news from the city news room through the composing room stereotyping department and on to the press the mechanical process of news publishing was explained the students watched the mani pulation of the score board from to insure the arrival of the chapel special or to reduce oper ation expenses is yet to be deter mined the fact that the registration number of cars for the fall term lags somewhat behind the total of
