the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 115 no 34 tuesday february 24 2009 all the lehigh news first author shares experiences with writing and success by phil jaseph john grogan best-selling author of marley and me and the longest trip home reflected on his books and his experiences with writing thursday in packard auditorium grogan said while he was waiting for a new writing studio to be built he discovered linderman library and begin writing his second novel the longest trip home with its soaring ceilings stone fireplaces wrought-iron balconies and leaded-glass windows it looked like some thing out of a harry potter movie grogan said about linderman library on his blog it was a place meant for quiet study and yet i could be surrounded by students and teachers deep in their own work b&wphoto by mattbreitel grogan said he was approached by the friends of the lehigh libraries asking if he would speak at lehigh gro gan said on his blog he felt he needed to give back to the university grogan said when he was a columnist for the philadel phia inquirer he considered writing a book but could not find a suitable subject to write a book you really need to love your subject matter and i just wasn't feeling it grogan said he said he found his topic when he remembered his dog marley whom he described as a catalyst in his marriage marley was just under 100 pounds of unbridled energy and the little brain couldn't control the body grogan said marley and me author john grogan speaks at packard auditorium thursday grogan talked about his books his writing method and his famous yellow labrador retriever after the lecture grogan answered audience questions entrepreneur program bold interactive by alyssa cadue lehigh's entrepreneurial leadership residency program held its first event at the victory firehouse wednesday despite the bad weather students faculty and members of the community gathered in the fire house's indoor basketball court to discuss the details of the new program the elr program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to work alongside companies from the lehigh valley for a total of six sessions students will be grouped with the entrepreneurs and then meet together to share ideas at the victory firehouse at 205 webster st on select wednesday evenings each group of students and business owners will make a pitch for funding to a panel of venture capi talists at the end of the april the presentations will be conducted at the vic tory firehouse in a style known as open court with buzzers sounding when the groups are out of time lauren berenato 09 a student in the engineer ing leadership minor is working on the elr pro gram with robert gustafson an instructor of leader ship development it's a completely innovative program that's not academic berenato said anyone from any school can participate and contribute to product development the original concept came from gustafson and dale falcinelli professor of practice and director of ventureseries at lehigh it's helping entrepreneurs to communicate their business to investors and what better way than with students falcinelli said it's a very interactive pro gram that will deliver insight through involvement the only way you can learn entrepreneurship is to experience it an addition to the team is mike gausling the events aim to expose sudanese crisis by liz martinez a series of events aimed at educating students about conflicts in the sudanese region of africa will be held this week eva gathura 12 a lead organizer of the week's events said she hopes students can learn something they didn't know before as americans we can't be ignorant about any thing that happens elsewhere because somehow it will eventually affect us gathura said ana arteaga 12 helped gathura plan the events arteaga took an international relations class where she said she learned about the conflicts in sudan pro pelling her to become part of the planning committee for sudan awareness week basically i feel like it's a topic worthy of public knowledge she said the week began monday with a showing of the documentary invisible children rough cut in sin clair auditorium invisible children inc is the umbrella organiza tion of schools for schools a group that encourages schools to compete and raise money for schools in uganda gathura said president of schools for schools at lehigh the documentary exposes the lives of thousands of people who are subjected to the atrocities of the lord's resistance army a group of guerrillas in northern uganda uganda a refuge for people fleeing genocide in the sudan has recently become a recruiting ground for child soldiers gathura said the screening will be followed up with a workshop today in the multicultural room the screening will provide information about schools for schools and other related organizations to any student interested in helping or contributing to the cause on wednesday three speakers who have wit nessed first-hand the lord resistance army's oppres sion in uganda and who now travel across the coun try raising awareness about the invisible children will speak in lamberton's great room they will screen a short documentary called go updating the current situation in uganda the last event of the week held in packard audito rium will be hosted by the
