the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 115 no 33 friday february 20 2009 all the lehigh news first cpa changes push students to overload by deanna mclafferty as of aug 1 2009 the state of new york will increase its require ment to take the certified public accountant exam from 120 to 150 college credits according to the cpa journal online due to the change an increased number of lehigh's accounting students who might otherwise have otherwise entered the job market after graduating are applying to the university's five-year master's program professor parveen gupta of the accounting department said stu dents should be alerted by the change because many students are from the new york area and hope to work at new york accounting organi zations upon graduation seniors can technically take the exam before august with a total of 120 credits but many professors do not advise this the problem for students aside from meeting the requirements of different states is to have mobility said james largay professor of accounting if you decide to move to a different jurisdiction and you don't meet the educational requirement you've got courses to take professor kenneth sinclair of the accounting department said he agrees with largay if students get transferred to new jersey at some point or they find a spouse in some other state in the country and that state has a 150 hour rule which is very likely because most do then they still have a problem sinclair said since gaining 150 credits in four years is difficult without overload ing many accounting students are forced to stay another year which may mean applying for the master's program the program admits despite career fair students still nervous by rosemary saveri those still struggling to land a job in the unstable market got an other opportunity with a career fair this week but some students said they were still skeptical the bth annual lehigh valley collegiate career expo was held on wednesday at the holiday inn conference center in fogelsville the lvcce specifically targets new graduates and students for internship opportunities volunteer opportunities part-time employ ment and/or full-time employment according to its web site the expo does not target one specific opportunity said mar cia mckay recruiting coordinator for career services it is gener ally broad-based it is listed in the program that you receive about what companies are looking for whether it be interns or permanent employees the event is held by colleges in the lehigh valley and the sur rounding area this year 15 schools including lehigh lafayette northampton community college moravian reading area com munity college and alvernia college hosted the event over 100 employers recruited at the expo searching for students from diverse backgrounds and fields the employers are there for students all across the board said donna goldfeder director of career services there are opportunities for students interested in business engineering marketing govern ment jobs and even non-profit organizations it should interest all stu dents across the board crunch time b&w photo by stephen jabaut several students study at a table in linderman library this past week both libraries on campus were packed as students crammed for their four o'clock exams housing lottery leaves some residents frustrated by katelyn hanna-wortley residential services released upperclassman housing lottery numbers monday creating ag gravation among some students ozzie breiner director of residential ser vices said he gets many calls from frustrated students and parents after the numbers are released they hate me he said i spend a lot of time talking to parents and students explaining to them that we're trying to be as fair as we pos sibly can be in providing housing for those who need it james fredette 10 said he received the very last lottery number last year i found out when one of my friends sent me a text message that said ultimate fail he said when i asked what he meant he told me that i had the very very last number the friend fredette had planned to live with that year also had a poor number so the two were uncertain about what they should do after we got our bad numbers we looked at off-campus houses and the houses we saw the ones that were left at that point were not good houses he said fortunately another friend paired fredette and his friend up with two other students who had good numbers and needed roommates so fredette was able to live in campus square this year many upperclassmen who receive bad num bers are not as fortunate as fredette and are forced to find off campus housing anne whitebread 10 said she also received a poor lottery number last year when we found out our numbers last year i was disappointed because i was hoping to live in campus square whitebread said but that definitely wasn't happening with our numbers we had to start looking off campus breiner said he sympathizes with the students it's tough breiner said we guarantee and require housing for first and second year students after that we do the best we can but we just don't have enough residences to keep everybody happy breiner said while plans do exist to build more residence halls they will not be imple mented for at least four years there is a realization that we could house more students on campus especially if we built something as popular as campus square that students tend to really enjoy breiner said it's in our long-term plan since there cannot be new housing immedi ately breiner said residential services does the best it can to keep students happy we're always looking to do things different ly or somehow better for the students he said breiner said about three years ago residen tial services experimented with moving the upperclassman lottery and housing selection to the fall this way if their numbers were bad students would have an easier
