the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 116 no 24 friday december 5 2008 all the lehigh news first aids awareness b&w photo by all echelman the aids quilt on display in the linderman library rotunda from monday through friday was sponsored by lgbtqa services in honor of worlds aids week changes in sorority rush aiming to ease tensions by emily iwan sororities are eliminating the need to make cuts in an effort to make the rush process less stressful the new process called mutual se lection will match potential members and sororities by requiring both parties to rank their preferences instead of re quiring participants to cut houses or women said rebecca long 09 presi dent of kappa alpha theta this year right after the rounds are over girls who are rushing will rank their preferences of houses then-and there long said rae williams 10 president of alpha chi omega sorority said she believes instituting mutual selection will be a positive change to the recruitment process mutual selection will be better for both sides during rush because now neither sorority houses or rushees will have to cut anyone she said the impression i got is that this will create more options and a more positive re cruitment experience long said panhel the oversight body of all sororities on campus made the decision to institute the mutual selection into rush this year a lot of other colleges do this because they have found it to be beneficial to both sides she said like williams long said she thinks these changes will improve the rush process and lessen the stress girls feel during rush hopefully this will provide girls an opportunity to be themselves and get to know the girls without worrying if they messed up their first impression long said i think this process will help girls make a better decision about what houses they really want it will cut down on gossip and rumors which used to happen during the hours of down taylor gym adds new equipment by allie rolnik the welch fitness center in taylor gymnasium will be updated over winter break with the addition of four tread mills two stationary bicycles and a weight training machine according to a press release by douglas strange director of fitness fifteen new spinning ma chines have also been pur chased with hope to expand the indoor spinning program according to the press release new dumbbells were also purchased we need some freshness and increased opportunities at the gym strange said this is part of our short term priorities to get some excitement back and let folks know we're ad dressing their concerns all machines are made by the star trac fitness company and will be ready for use by jan 12 the first day of classes of the spring semester accord ing to the press release these training units offer user friendly options and com bined smooth functional move ment the press release said human sport the weight training machine is a new model by star trac the ma chine is a collection of six dual-function cable-based ma chines according to the press release strange said the new ad ditions to the gym were pur chased mostly for the students benefit so they would continue to use the facility however they will be available to fac ulty staff and registered welch fitness center members as well students faculty and staff will enjoy the opportunity of new and evolving fitness tech nology the press release said which they can implement daily for better health b&w photo by all echelman students faculty and staff will have access to new equipment in taylor gymnasium in the spring grad student beaten robbed by elaine hardenstine a student was attacked and robbed of his wallet debit card and cash in brodhead park ing lot around 9 p.m on nov 28 according to lehigh police reports mark s.jones 25 of allentown allegedly punched a graduate student in the face and demanded he hand over his wallet phone and money according to a witness the student suffered multiple strikes to the face according to the police affidavit and was sent to st luke's hospital for medical care jones and anthony e young 19 of bethle hem allegedly planned to rob the student ac cording to the affidavit as the men fled the student waved down a passing police car and identified the alleged robbers after searching the men police found the stolen wallet in jones left pocket according to the affidavit jones said he found the wallet on the ground and ran be cause he heard the victim screaming jones is charged with robbery conspiracy to commit robbery aggravated assault conspira cy to commit aggravated assault and receiving stolen property according to the affidavit after failing to post the 100,000 bail he awaits his hearing in northampton county prison young told police he had nothing to do with the incident he is charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and assault he was also cited for underage drinking after the arresting officer smelled alcohol on his
