the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 116 no 23 tuesday november 25 2008 all the lehigh news first lehigh 31 lafayette 15 by reggie hall mountain hawks beat lafayette college on the road after four-year losing streak b&w photo by christopher chew lehigh players coaches and fans got to rush fisher field to celebrate for the first time in eight years saturday after a 31-15 victory the mountain hawks victory was sealed in the last minutes of the fourth quarter when sophomore cornerbackjohn kennedy returned an interception 94 yards for a touchdown the hawks and leopards played in front of a sold out crowd of 15,908 in the 144 th meet ing of college football's oldest rivalry lehigh went into halftime up 17-12 and never relinquished the lead lehigh sophomore quarterback j.b clark was named the most valuable player of the game after completing 12 out of 22 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns clark playing in the first lehigh-lafayette game of his career is the first lehigh sopho more quarterback to win the mvp award since hall of famer marty horn won the award in 1983 b&wphoto by steven balter senior wide receiver nick johnson runs for the ball in the endzone in the second-quarter for a touchdown event aims to snuff out smoking deaths by shana bellin students tried to spread awareness about the dan gers of nicotine and hosted an outlet for others to share stories on smoking-related dis eases wednesday at the great american smokeout members of colleges against cancer posted pam phlets in lehigh's dining halls stating the ingredients used in cigarettes the ingredients were presented in a menu style made to stay consistent with the theme in dining halls said paige malinowski 09 cac education chair flyers were also hung in the dining halls that detailed the relationship between smoking and lung cancer and listed the effects both have on a user's body members of cac also drew outlines of bodies on memori al walkway to remind students the number of deaths smoking causes each year malinowski said in a joint effort with the health center cac handed out cold turkey sandwiches to anyone who made a pledge not to smoke for an entire day or to help a friend not smoke for the entire day this was meant to symbolize the best way to stop smoking quitting cold turkey said sam gold stein 11 who is the cac ad vocacy chair there are a lot of ways people can help you gold stein said we're trying to promote why you affect everyone you're around by smoking that was the point we were trying to get across today goldstein said she was af fected by cancer in her senior year of high school when her grandfather passed away from six different forms of the ailment he was an inspiration to me in every way she said when i heard about cac i realized cancer affected me and my family so much i joined the club and became a big part of it colleges against cancer tries to attack the addiction before any long term disease can be developed malinowski said the earlier someone de cides to quit smoking the better the chance that he or runners face south mountain for 54th annual turkey trot by jessica chu lehigh students faculty staff members and alumni faced bitter cold thursday to run in the 54th annual turkey trot one of the oldest spirit week events the race which is approxi mately 2.5 miles starts in front of packer memorial church and winds through campus to the top of the hill and ends at the u.c front lawn the turkey trot is part of the lehigh-lafayette tradition it began as a race done before thanksgiving and the winner would receive a free turkey dinner jane josephson tur key trot coordinator said the turket trot has changed over the years jo sephson said adapting to road construction and now the construction site of the new steps building but it's not the course that encourages students to race she said it takes the lehigh com munity to bring the tradition to the turkey trot joseph son said and as times have passed the turkey trot has changed with everything josephson recalled the sto ry of a man who graduated a years ago who flew from flor ida just to run in the turkey trot and when he finished running he went right back to the airport josephson ended up mailing him a t-shirt she said running in the turkey trot is one of those proud statements you would say during lehigh-laf said barb turanchik club sports director it's because of the tradition and people want to be a part of the lehigh experience jim mcsweeney 11 and runners start strong beginning the uphill leg of the turkey trot outside packer memorial church see the rivalry page 15 see smokeout page 6 see turkey trot page 2 the new napster wtlfh m wrestling beats check online for textbook piracy f\fl f o michigan breaking news page 7 ——' j page 16 thebrownandwhite.com
