foreign panel weighs in world would vote obama by lauren hanat five foreign journalists spoke tuesday about how they believe their home countries would vote over whelmingly the panelists said sena tor barack obama jaciel cordoba from wfmz-tv 69 news served as mediator to the crowd of about 75 students in whita ker auditorium germans are so madly in love with barack obama that when he gave the speech in berlin a few hun dred thousand people showed up said hannes stein a journalist from die welt newspaper in germany despite most germans support of obama he said he believes many would be disappointed when obama did not live up to expectations he said american presidential candidates are fascinating and inter esting a trait german politicians do not share erol avdovic who is a reporter for the jutarni list newspaper in cro atia said that american elections are still important half a world away i can assure you that people in the part of the world that i'm report ing to are watching listening and they have their own stakes in what's going to happen in the final day tuesday he said avdovic said he does not support gov sarah palm and said her com ments about alaska's proximity to russia were laughable palm was a national joke av dovic said george baumgarten ajewish news correspondent from israel said at first older jewish voters were hesi tant to vote for obama because he is black recent polls however showed obama making big gains with jewish voters vladimir kikilo from itar taas a news agency in russia said his country is generally supportive of obama and people are hopeful alleged burglars caught in chase at moravian by sarah freeman five men who allegedly burglarized a dorm room at moravian college were captured and sent to jail thursday after being pursued across campus by the victims and witnesses according to northampton county court records the suspects were charged with burglary theft defiant trespassing and receiving stolen property the suspects entered wilhem hall police said and broke into students joe cogliano and frank laconte's room residents of the building observed the suspects in the room which the suspects were not authorized to be in residents yelled hey get out of that room court reports said when cogliano and laconte returned to their room they noticed that a white imac notebook valued at 1,000 and an unidentified amount of money from a wallet next to the computer were missing the victims and other residents tried to re strain the suspects until police could be called but the suspects fled the building according to court records students pursued the suspects across campus until they were stopped by police and sent to northampton county prison two of the suspects were caught by a police of ficer on campus who was assisting moravian police with a noise complaint the officer noticed several males running from the center of campus a stu dent flagged down the officer and notified him of the situation after which the officer detained the suspects the other three suspects were caught by a police unit called to the scene according to court records ten moravian student witnesses and the vic tims provided statements to police implicating the suspects officials expand greek life beyond the hill by chris knight â– five chapters are competing for two open spots to become recognized non residential fraternities greek life will be expanding off the hill to include two non-residential social fraternities officials said with hopes to appeal to students who may not be in terested in greek life on the hill tim wilkinson director of fraternity and sorority affairs said the expansion is an opportunity to grow a new portion of the greek community normally expansion opportunities bring groups of students together who aren't normally interested in the current greek experience wilkinson said so it's the idea that a good greek community tries to grow and thrive the expansion marks the first time that social fra ternities will be opened off-campus at lehigh wilkin son said where all fraternities were also located on the hill the application process began in may after send ing out a call to the north american interfraternity conference that lehigh was expanding to which 12 greek organizations responded those chapters were narrowed down to five finalists all of which had pre viously operated at lehigh and have active alumni wilkinson said by next thursday members from those five final ists will have finished giving presentations in public forums the first of which began on oct 22 wilkinson said fraternity and sorority affairs ex pects to make decision on which fraternities will win the spots either in november or december but did not know an exact date non-residential fraternities which operate under the same rules as other recognized fraternities are relatively common across most northeastern colleges and universities but currently no recognized social fraternities at lehigh are non-residential wilkinson said the major difference between a residential and a non-residential social fraternity wilkinson said is that there is no central meeting place in response the university will work with the orga nizations to find places on campus that they can meet this is by no means about shifting groups off the hill or away from fraternity houses wilkinson said this is just an opportunity to grow the greek com munity knowing that the hill is not an experience everyone wants university recognition will have its benefits such as being allowed to host
