the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 116 no 15 tuesday october 28 2008 all the lehigh news first speaker targets muslim student associations by katelyn hanna-wortley the muslim student association a national student group that has chapters at many colleges including lehigh is linked to islamic terrorist groups a speaker said thursday evening in pack ard auditorium my concern is that organizations like the msa pretend to be religious and cultural organizations that are re ally political organizations said david horowitz a conservative writer and activist just as there are good christians and bad christians and good jews and bad jews there are also good mus lims as well as bad ones horowitz said the good ones outnumber the bad ones but that doesn't mean we shouldn't talk about the bad ones horowitz said the national muslim student association is a part of the muslim brotherhood an organization that according to horowitz also creat ed al-qaida and hamas horowitz said the plan of the muslim brotherhood is to infiltrate america and take down western civilization horowitz said he does not know much about the muslim student as sociation at lehigh except that they would not sign a petition to reform a hadith a record of the teachings of muhammad that says muslims should kill jewish people this petition is en b&wphoto by chris knight dorsed by the american islamic forum for democracy and sponsored by the terrorist awareness project chapters of the muslim student association at other colleges did not sign the petition either horowitz said during his lecture horowitz also spoke about the israeli-palestinian conflict the palestinian cause is a geno cidal campaign against the jews said horowitz who is jewish the israelis are civil democratic people and the arab people are not they are bar baric he said this is a very sick culture — the author david horowitz expressed his view thursday night that muslim student associations have links to terrorist groups in packard auditorium he also discussed his opinion on the israel-palestine conflict student voters may overlook local candidates by dana anderson the number of voters undecided on a pres idential candidate has dwindled as campaigns debates and appearances have gone on for more than a year but the presidential ticket is just one check box on a ballot with multiple positions includ ing representative in congress attorney gen eral auditor general state treasurer and state representative many students have switched to pennsyl vania to vote but few are as knowledgeable about local politics as they might be about the issues in the presidential race elijah douglass 11 said although he is not aware of any candidates or issues on the ballot and probably won't research them he believes students should realize that their vote affects local people researching the candidates should proba bly be important because we are deciding who else the people around here get douglass said i never actually thought of that alissa perez 09 said she does not know any of the candidates on the ballot besides the presidential and vice presidential candidates but said she plans on doing some research be fore she votes perez said if a person is going to vote for local positions he or she should research the issues and candidates i think if people are going to vote for a particular person like if they decide to cast a vote one way or the other they should know why perez said students not from the area but who regis tered to vote in the area should know their votes could affect the local people even more than the students said bethany ashman 09 college republicans hold week of events by jennifer cohen lehigh's college republicans hosted a series of documentaries lectures and events as part of last week's paint the campus red week which is designed to promote conservative viewpoints the documentaries indoctrinate-u and obses sion were screened monday oct 20 and wednesday oct 22 respectively indoctrinate-u is a documentary chronicling the limitations on free speech imposed by america's col leges according to the film's web site obsession deals with global jihad and reveals an insider's view of the hatred the radicals are teaching their incitement of global jihad and their goal of world domination according to the film's web site conservative coming out day held tuesday oct 21 was designed to encourage campus conservatives to come out from hiding and be proud of their beliefs in the face of liberal professors and administrators said trevor drummond 10 the communications director of the college republicans conservative coming out day aimed to invite campus conservatives to dawn their conservative but tons shirts and other paraphernalia and celebrate the values and pride of their ideology drummond said paint the campus red week concluded thursday with a lecture by author david horowitz whose mis sion is to defend america's free society through edu cating the public to preserve traditional constitutional values of individual freedom rule of law private prop erty and limited government according to his web site the david horowitz freedom center horowitz also writes for frontpage magazine a right wing political magazine dedicated to bringing readers news they won't see elsewhere in the mainstream me dia according to its web site the magazine chron icles jihad and middle eastern conflicts as well as the united states foreign policy and domestic concerns the title of horowitz's speech was helping the enemy to win support for the jihad on american campuses and it was co-sponsored by the leader ship institute an organization whose mission is to train conservative leaders for work in politics according to its web site dan vari 12 a conservative and a mccain sup porter said people are very open about their conserva tive views on campus but the campus is predominately liberal a college has a young population he said young people are more liberal brendan hannon 12 said he holds conservative views disagreed the campus is not overwhelmed with liberals he said liberals are more outspoken so
