lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 116 no 5 tuesday september 16 2008 all the lehigh news first grey's anatomy actress registers voters at rathbone by julie stewart actress kate walsh of the abc network's grey's anatomy and pri vate practice visited lehigh saturday at rathbone hall to register voters and talk about why she supports sen barack obama in the upcoming presi dential election walsh portrayed addison shepherd on grey's anatomy before starring in private practice a spin-off of the hit show before arriving on campus walsh made an appearance at the obama campaign office on main street in bethlehem she explained to the crowd of obama supporters why she supports the senator i'm here because i love my coun try she said walsh said she was impressed by obama upon her first introduction to him she went to obama's web site to look into his ideology and realized his beliefs lined up with hers while on hiatus from her television work because of last season's writer's b&wphoto by christopher chew guild of america strike walsh fol lowed the progress of the election and decided to take an active role in the campaign really i got on board after lowa she said i was so inspired and excited walsh said she likes obama's plan to increase taxes for the wealthiest americans while retaining the tax cuts for the working class walsh said she grew up in a working-class home and kate walsh of abc's grey's anatomy and private practice registered voters outside of rathbone hall on saturday she also posed for pictures and signed autographs for fans during her appearance new bins won't require sorting of recyclables by sarah freeman lehigh is switching to a single-stream re cycling method that will allow all recyclable materials to be placed in one bin and eliminate the hassle and confusion of sorting said gary falasca director of facilities services and cam pus planning he said the transition to single-stream pro cessing will not be complete until the end of the fall semester and all new recycling recep tacles will be blue with the recycling logo and a sticker stating what materials can and cannot be recycled greenstar which will provide single-stream recycling for lehigh allows all recyclable mate rials to be collected together and then sorted at a plant recycling previously could only be taken in presorted groups such as a bin for paper and another bin for glass campus organizations including student senate and the environmental coalition pushed for a more effective recycling system last year tom marshall recycling director for the city of bethlehem allowed these plans to be put into action on campus falasca said richard benner assistant director of facili ties services and campus planning said lehigh will have 1,000 containers for offices 500 for classrooms 50 for use in dining services 100 for athletic and outdoor events and 200 for indoor public spaces twenty dumpsters will be re moved from campus in anticipation for the new recycling method falasca said lehigh's existing outdoor re cycling bins will have new lids with a larger opening to accommodate all types and sizes of recyclable materials facilities services also plans to educate lehigh about the new recycling method with new academic integrity sanctions begin in october by david craig a minimum sanction for academic integrity violations will go into effect in october pending approval by the board of trustees said officials involved in the decision chris mulvihill the assistant dean of students said the new guidelines suggest a minimum of one semester of disciplinary probation for a first offense of academic dishonesty and a minimum of four full semesters of disciplinary suspension for a second offense those sanctions were determined by a committee of students faculty and staff who came together to discuss what should be the future minimum sanctions mulvihill said the minimum sanctions which are only suggestive guidelines for disciplinary hearing panels were already being used but needed to be put into writing we needed to put these sanctions in place so that we can have an informed student body said mulvihill we also hope that they will serve as a deterrent to those students who would try to commit academic dishonesty hearing panels which rule over each individual case of academic dishonesty will not be restricted to following only these minimum sanctions but may also supplement the sanctions with other re quirements such as attending educational workshops completing work for no credit and issuing written apologies over the past five years lehigh has is sued 33 warnings to students for violations of academic integrity and has sentenced 89 to disciplinary probation according to the minutes of a faculty meeting during that period two students were expelled having penalties in place for academic fraud is just as necessary as having penal ties for financial fraud mulvihill said at institutions of higher education ideas are our currency mulvihill said if you're receiving credit for work that is not your own it is the same as receiving money you did not earn to reaffirm commitment to academic integrity from the student body the stu dent senate issued a statement on aca demic honesty that had to be signed by all incoming freshmen during their orienta tion said student senate president divya nayar 10 these sanctions show lehigh's seri ous stance toward academic dishonesty nayar said they need to be in place be cause if everyone cheated then our univer sity would lose its academic standing justin remsen 09 said he thinks defin ing minimum sanctions is the right thing to do to uphold the university's integrity but he also thinks the minimum sanctions should not apply to every individual case i think lehigh should have a strong position against academic dishonesty but if you're only copying someone's home work then your punishment shouldn't be that serious
