dams were discus sed in the light of repent research done by the earths and founda tions committee of the american society of civil engineers by dr glenon gilboy asst professor of soil mechanics at massachusetts in stitute of technology he gave the lecture before an open meeting of the civil engineering society last evening in packard laboratory dr gilßoy has done extensive work in this field and now holds a promin ent position in his line of study the reason for failure in build ings he explained is that the build ing cannot adjust itself to deforma tion in the soil dr gilboy explain ed that we need more knowledge of the physical properties of soil so that we may determine the settle ment of a building the process known as consolidation was de scribed with special reference to clay soil clay introduces certain complications as it is almost imper vious to water the effects of a load on clay is a longtime adjustment dr gilboy illustrated by means of an analogy that the rate of consol idation depends upon the permeabil ity of the soil piles weaken foundations dr gilboy said the soil which you build on before^piles are driven into it is not the same after the piles are driven he illustrated by means of slides that a foundation is usual ly weakened by use of piles due to rupture of the sdil the importance of keeping soil in an undisturbed condition was emphasized the lecture was concluded by an explanation of some of the hydraul ics and soil qualities desirable in an ordinary earth dam continued on page four two students of journalism at lehigh university and founda tions and earth dams were discus sed in the light of repent research done by the earths and founda tions committee of the american society of civil engineers by dr glenon gilboy asst professor of soil mechanics at massachusetts in stitute of technology he gave the lecture before an open meeting of the civil engineering society last evening in packard laboratory dr gilßoy has done extensive work in this field and now holds a promin ent position in his line of study the reason for failure in build ings he explained is that the build ing cannot adjust itself to deforma tion in the soil dr gilboy explain ed that we need more knowledge of the physical properties of soil so that we may determine the settle ment of a building the process known as consolidation was de scribed with special reference to clay soil clay introduces certain complications as it is almost imper vious to water the effects of a load on clay is a longtime adjustment dr gilboy illustrated by means of an analogy that the rate of consol idation depends upon the permeabil ity of the soil piles weaken foundations dr gilboy said the soil which you build on before^piles are driven into it is not the same after the piles are driven he illustrated by means of slides that a foundation is usual ly weakened by use of piles due to rupture of the sdil the importance of keeping soil in an undisturbed condition was emphasized the lecture was concluded by an explanation of some of the hydraul ics and soil qualities desirable in an ordinary earth dam continued on page four two students of journalism at lehigh
