lehigh will be scene of intercollegiates mike dorizas speaks at sunday y m c a meeting house party week end big success price five cents wrestling matches between the eastern teams will be held here in march college conferees urge disarmament noted athlete delivers an inter esting illustrated lecture on present day holy land full program of enjoyable social events delights a goodly num ber over the week-end easton eleven is poor match for team work of brown and white eleven score 5-0 representatives at the princeton conference decide against armament expansion brilliant run of 65 yards by larkin following a forward pass makes victory possible score 21-14 many entertained freshmen and sophomore dan es university and tea dances provide amusement brown and white plays good game thruout hardy shows fine work at quarterback the intercollegiate wrestling as sociation meeting in new york last week approved of lehigh as the scene of the annual intercollegiate wrestling championship the dates named were mar,gti 24 and 25 the lehigh varsity wrestlers will start work in a few weeks in prep aration for the championships and for the dual matches meanwhile several of last year's varsity men have been working out daily with the freshman matmen about thir ty first-year men are out every day working under the direction of as sistant coach j l bertolet be ginning next week the varsity coach will instruct the yearlings re maining until the first-team candi dates call his attention the fresh men have already scheduled a dual match with cornell 1925 and will take on either the columbia year lings in new york or perm in phil adelphia the new men have been showing up quite well and coach bertolet is pleased with the ma terial on band however more men are needed and all freshmen who have any ability are urged to come out for practice it has been announced that five freshmen and five sophomores will wrestle at the big smoker on the night before the lafayette game and with this incentive the 25 men are working hard hoping to atone for the defeat of one of their num ber at the hands of a sophomore during the w and j smoker scrub eleven loses to mercersburg academy the lehigh scrubs lost a hard fought game to mercersburg acad emy at mercersburg on saturday by the score of 14 to 0 the mercers burg team was out for blood and regained its former stride by wip ing out last week's defeat at the hands of the perm state freshmen it was the fifth victory of the cur 1 rent gridiron season for coach me j cormack's cumberland valley j squad heath and walsh were the outstanding stars of the mercers burg team while johnson and springsteen played best for the i scrubs johnson and bueckley of the scrubs are both former mer cersburg men lehigh kicked off in the first pe riod and although both teams made substantial gains neither side scor ed before the first quarter ended j mercersburg broke the tie in the second quarter when after books j had gained ten yards a brilliant pass dignan to heath netted thirty j yards for a touchdown during j this quarter bueckley of the scrubs intercepted a forward pass and ran | thirty yards to within five yards of the mercersburg goal-line but the scrubs lacked the punch to carry the ball over the line mercersburg added its second and final count in the third period when walsh who substituted for hughes at quarterback plunged through le high's 1-yard line for a touchdown books again kicked the goal after this the scrubs threatened to cross the mercersburg goal-line several times but were always held for downs by the strong defense of the opponents continued on page three ' mike dorizas the university of pennsylvania's heavyweight wrestler of a few years ago and now holding the position of assist ant professor of economics at his alma mater delivered an interest ing address on syria and pales tine at the y m c a meeting sunday evening mr dorizas spent twenty months in france at the front and at the cessation of his tilities was appointed a member of the american commission to inves tigate conditions in the near east as a member of this commission mr dorizas spent considerable time near and in the holy land and his lecture consisted in a concise review of existing conditions in that part of the world his talk was illus trated by several hundred colored slides all photographed personally which vividly portrayed rural life in and around palestine views were also shown of the cities of nazareth bethany and damascus and of the surrounding country in cluding the dead sea and the moun tains of judea living conditions and general characteristics of the nomaui ixi'j , were illustrated in the course of his talk mr dorizas traced the history of the turk dur ing the last several hundred years and emphasized the fact that the near east would never be safe for christans until turkey is thorough ly wiped out he recounted the great german dream previous to the war of the berlin to bagdad railroad and of establishing a pro mohammedan empire which would embrace the whole near east in his concluding remarks mr dori zas stated that the only salvation j for armenia and the other chris tian nations in that part of the globe lay in american intervention and that the turkish atrocities would continue until some action is taken by the united states at the conclusion of the address mr dorizas was warmly thanked by a r little 22 the president of the y m c a gym notes delegates from 40 universities and colleges of the east representing more than 100,000 students took a decided stand on the coming wash ington conference at the intercolle giate conference on the limitation of armaments at princeton on oc tober 26 three very definite ex pectations were set forth by the res olutions adopted by the conference : first a settlement of the far east ern question ; second an agreement to suspend all present programs for naval construction and to undertake no further expansion ; and third to reduce substantially the present na val strength of the nations con cerned the conference gave assurance of proving of practical worth when the assemblage endorsed the student friendship fund under the leader ship of john r mott which has for its purpose the aid of students in foreign lands hampered in their pursuit of education by lack of food shelter clothing and books the delegates are to actively work for the fund on the return to their re spective institutions this action the conference felt will bring be fore the washington conference a practical example of the fact that world fellowship is the best moral equivalent for war telegrams from president hard ing and secretary of state hughes commending the student movement were read at the conference my very cordial greetings wrote pres ident harding to the college con ferees at princeton gathered to dis cuss the problem incident to § inter national agreement on limitation of armaments knowing as i do the sincerity of our american purpose free from every phase of national selfishness it is most gratifying to know that the college thought of the republic is being exercised helpfully to commit the sentiment of our coach unable to get started until finally the forward line worked the ball up the field and bonnemaison lo cated the net on a pretty pass from fernandez this seemed to give the brown and white some real enthu siasm and after that the visitors were kept busy with lehigh's at tack toward the close of the half fernandez broke through the de fense and when the goal-tender came out to meet him he dribbled past and shot into an open net the half ended with the score 2 to 0 in lehigh's favor the soccer team bad little trouble in defeating the keystone f c of eastor saturday afternoon before the football game by a 5 to 0 score the visitors were outplayed during the entire contest and lehigh's fast passing game had them completely bewildered country and the world to real a chievements a great service to this generation may prove vastly greater to generations yet to come secretary hughes's message was as follows the state department welcomes the aid of public-spirited citizens in furthering the objects of the conference on the limitations of armament and keenly desires to facilitate all who are engaged in the effort to give accurate information and to develop sound opinion literal disarmament said ma jor general john f o'ryan at the evening mass meeting is of course a dream nations will not turn all their war implements into ploughs but a definite limitation of anna continued on page three playing their best game of the season lehigh won from the big heavy west virginia mountaineers by a 21 to 14 score saturday after noon on taylor field although greatly outweighed and consequent ly out-rushed coach glick's little gang won by a sparing and oppor tune use of the forward pass two of their touchdowns were made pos sible by judicious use of a pass the third was made on a recovery of a fumble the contest was featured by start ling plays which kept the large crowd on edge but the feature play came when larkin caught a short pass on his 30-yard line and ran 65 yards through the west virginia team to his opponents 5-yard line during his run he escaped being tackled several times by clever side stepping and np.tr the goal-line he turned to the left to avoid several tacklers and was downed from be hind two line-bucks by cousins carried the ball over and the game was won the faults which were conspicu ous in the state and w and j games were lacking and the brown and white played the best football they have shown this year and this in spite of the fact that several of the best players are out of the game with injuries hardy at quar ter was a great improvement ; un der his direction the plays went off better while his judgment of the plays was also good the fumbling which marred earlier games was ab sent and the lehigh players fol lowed the ball closely several times recovering fumbles by the oppo sition lehigh again showed that the for ward pass is its best weapon by making two of their touchdowns possible by this route completing a number of passes for good gains some large gains were also made through the line but here the brown and white was outweighed and at times outplayed it would be difficult to say which of lehigh's players did the best work but bessemer greer and har dy all played well in the backfield and read did some neat tackling around end the halfbacks backed up the line wel,l when the w va players broke through continued on page four the statistics show w ya made 12 first downs to 5 for lehigh but this advantage was offset by le band dance pre-medical society meeting the past week-end was a big suc cess socially as well as athletically almost half of the fraternities held house parties and a large number of fair visitors enjoyed the many dances and athletic events the west virginia game was attended by a host of feminine enthusiasts and the dances claimed the largest attendances of t*he season on friday night the annual soph omore cotillion was held in drown hall while at the same time the freshmen held their dance at the delta tau delta house on sat urday afternoon everyone went to the football game with west vir ginia and immediately following this the tea dance in drown hall was the attraction saturday even ing a college dance was held in drown hall which completed a full program for the entire two days of the week-end the sophomore cotillion was a most brilliant affair fully up to the standard of former years sherbo's orchestra of new york furnished the music which was well above the average dance music the chap erones were mrs w l estes mrs j l stewart and several other la dies of the faculty drown hall elaborately decorated for the occa sion represented a barn on hallow e'en the ceiling was strung with black and orange streamers while corn-stalks and pumpkins were placed about the hall a many colored spot-light was frequently used during the evening for spot light dances amid a glow of soft lights and the strains of catchy music the class of 1925 inaugurated its social sea son last friday night at the delta tau delta house the annual freshman dance was a complete success from the first burst of the ( rchestra at 8.30 until the notes of home sweet home died out at 2 o'clock in the morning the fraternity house was taste fully decorated with autumn leaves and with orange and black lamp shades the prevailing colors being those of hallowe'en the billiard room was set aside as a lounging rooon and was itself beautifully ar ranged the large table in the mid dle was decked with an array of autumn leaves flanked by lighted jack ()' lanterns the honey hoy orchestra of allentown fur nished music that was full of life about one hundred couples filled the large house to overflowing re freshments were served at mid night professor and mrs f v larkin were the chaperones and dr em ery and major lang were among the guests after mid-night many came from the sophomore cotillion and swelled the already large num ber to greater proportions immediately following the foot ball game the tea dance took place in drown hall the best possible music was furnished by cohen's or continued on page three the lehigh band will hold a dance in drown hall on saturday november 5 for the purpose of raising money to buy new sweaters the band is short of funds at pres ent and takes this opportunity to give the students of lehigh a good time and also to deck itself out in new uniforms the students can count on excellent music and a splendid time lacrosse men at work in practice about forty men are working steadily every day under the super vision of coaches lattig and estes in preparation for spring lacrosse although it is only fall practice the squad gives every promise of keep ing up lehigh's championship stan dard despite the loss of six varsity men by graduation there is a lack of freshman candidates and all men wishing to report for the team should see manager l l drew it is compulsory that all candi dates for assistant manager shall report for fall practice or they will not be recognized next spring the schedule is at the present time merely a tentative one and the dates will be settled upon at the in tercollegiate lacrosse conference which will be held in new york during the winter the teams to be played will be practically the same as those of the season of 1921 consisting of the following new york lacrosse club st john's rutgers stevens army swarth more univ of penna and johns hopkins the pre-medical society will hold its first meeting on friday night at 8 o'clock in drown hall the date for the meeting was pre viously set for thursday but this has been changed by the executive committee an interesting pro gram has been arranged including an original surprise dr rice will deliver an address on pathology the other speakers will be dr em ery dr hall and professor more assistant professor of physical training bartlett has issued the first call for fencing team candidates all men experienced in fencing or those who would like to learn should see mr bartlett in taylor gym classes will be held twice weekly candidates for the gymnasium team report every afternoon at 3.00 o'clock this class is under the di rect supervision of mr bartlett and although newly-established has been a decided success thus far the faculty gymnasium class meets wednesday afternoon at 3.30 and friday morning at 10.30 this class is very popular and the ma jority of the faculty are enthusias tic participants all men who are physically un able to participate in the regular athletic program are urged to at tend mr bartlett's class in special exercises preparation for spring lacrosse although it is only fall practice the squad gives every promise of keep ing up lehigh's championship stan dard despite the loss of six varsity men by graduation there is a lack of freshman candidates and all men wishing to report for the team should see manager l l drew it is compulsory that all candi dates for assistant manager shall report for fall practice or they will not be recognized next spring the schedule is at the present time merely a tentative one and the dates will be settled upon at the in tercollegiate lacrosse conference which will be held in new york during the winter the teams to be played will be practically the same as those of the season of 1921 consisting of the following new york lacrosse club st john's rutgers stevens army swarth more univ of penna and johns hopkins the pre-medical society will hold its first meeting on friday night at 8 o'clock in drown hall the date for the meeting was pre viously set for thursday but this has been changed by the executive committee an interesting pro gram has been arranged including an original surprise dr rice will deliver an address on pathology the other speakers will be dr em ery dr hall and professor more assistant professor of physical training bartlett has issued the first call for fencing team candidates all men experienced in fencing or those who would like to learn should see mr bartlett in taylor gym classes will be held twice weekly candidates for the gymnasium team report every afternoon at 3.00 o'clock this class is under the di rect supervision of mr bartlett and although newly-established has been a decided success thus far the faculty gymnasium class meets wednesday afternoon at 3.30 and friday morning at 10.30 this class is very popular and the ma jority of the faculty are enthusias tic participants all men who are physically un able to participate in the regular athletic program are urged to at tend mr bartlett's class in special exercises
