the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 116 no 3 tuesday september 9 2008 ah the lehigh news first student groups look to register voters by julie stewart with this year's presidential election less than two months away supporters of both candi dates are looking to make sure college students are registered to vote both the camps of sen barack obama and sen john mccain are looking to register new vot ers to throw the election in their favor but they're also running out of time oct 6 is the last day to register to vote in pennsylvania before the nov 4 election so both sides are ramping up their efforts for the obama campaign that means bringing in celebrities such as kal perm best known for his role as kumar patel in the harold and kumar movies the focus now i guess is to make sure that all students know they can register to vote on their campus perm said on wednesday chris hughes co-creator of facebook and perm both supporters of barack obama participated in a call-in interview to explain how the obama campaign hopes to get college students involved in the november election fewer than 20 percent of pennsylvania college students voted in the 2004 presidential election perm said because many don't realize that they can sayre park now houses south mountain college students by hannah allen students in the south moun tain college including freshman have moved to sayre park vil lage this year the members of the program were housed in taylor residen tial college last year south mountain college is a residential and academic pro gram that began last year ac cording to its web site sayre park has traditionally housed upperclassmen and could previously be obtained only through high lottery numbers although sayre is beneficial to the goals of south mountain college the use of one of the buildings provides less op portunity for upperclassmen to get sayre through the housing lottery during the upperclassmen housing lottery the first resi dences chosen are the apartment style suites of campus square trembley park brodhead house and sayre park students with lower lottery numbers usually end up living in the dorm style living provided by taylor and drinker houses these dorm residences pro vide a similar living experience to that of living in a freshman dorm some older students think that the arrangement for students in b&w photo by chris chew the south mountain college to have an opportunity to live in the more popular residence is unfair greg james 11 went through the housing lottery and is cur rently living in drinker he said he believes it is unfair that fresh men in south mountain college are being allowed to live in sayre while there are upperclassmen living in dorms getting to live in sayre is a treat james said some of the best parts of freshmen year were in the dorm they are not getting the full freshman experience zeitler said south mountain college is not trying to steal sayre park village the housing community that used to be reserved for upperclassman now devotes one of its buildings to the students of south mountain college including freshman lafayette senior found dead jeremy saxe 21 died of unknown causes a lafayette college senior was found dead thursday after noon in his off-campus home police said jeremy saxe 21 of orange conn was found dead on 638 monroe st at 1:18 p.m by an other student who then called police officials said lafayette president daniel h weiss said the cause of the death is still unknown and that it will be investigated by campus police the northampton county coroner and the easton police department saxe's parents were notified of his death before his name was released weiss said my thoughts are with them and other family members and also with our community i ex tend to his family and to all those who knew jeremy my heartfelt condolences weiss said a gathering in colton chapel at the college was held last night at 6 p.m according to the ex press times about 200 people showed up at the vigil where counselors were available saxe was a philosophy major and a member of delta kappa epsilon fraternity according to the fraternity chapter's web site - staff reports suspected prowler arrested off-campus near student homes by gabriela saade a 49-year-old man was arrested on aug 24 for prowling on the 100 block of east fourth street police said hipolito santana vasquez was charged with suspicion of loitering and prowling police said earlier police had entered the off-cam pus house of two female lehigh students in search of a suspected prowler accord ing to the two students police arrested vasquez on aug 24 the house located on east fourth street belongs to danielle diamond 09 and dana wasilewski 09 diamond said the police spotted an open window in their home and entered under suspicions that the prowler may have been in the house the two women were startled when the police entered their home yelling that they were bethlehem police diamond said it made us feel safe that the cops were in the area and went through the trouble to make sure we were ok diamond said they were active in the area for people that were prowling after lehigh houses after entering the women's home the police took down their names and phone numbers both women may have to ap pear in court to confirm that the suspect was not authorized to be in the area diamond said she thinks other streets such as east fifth street may be better for students living off campus in general i think there are safer ar eas than fourth street she said it's a really busy street so there is a lot of noise and townies walking around the street diamond said she and her room mates were naive about taking safety precautions in their home she advises off-campus students to make sure that all the windows and doors are closed and locked students should travel home with someone else because there are people out there that aren't good news dia mond said liz covich 09 who lives on east fifth street and was not involved in the incident said she has taken many safety precautions in her home against break-ins covich said she has three locks on her bedroom door and put a mirror above her bed to make sure robbers are not un derneath her bed she also installed flood lights outside the house so that it is not dark when she is walking home at night covich said i think that the only safe area is the first two blocks of east fifth and hillside street covich said anything after that is definitely not safe see register page 5 see college page 6 exhibit displays flea «■[ football team beats check online for photographer's work \^? wh race ""^ breaking news page 16 page 16 www.thebrownandwhite.com
