the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 115 no 48 friday april 25 2008 all the lehigh news first in pennsylvania primary lehigh goes to the polls by andrew hermalyn ■despite strong support by college students for barack obama hillary clinton wins pa primary hillary clinton and john mccain were victorious in tuesday's pri mary election in pennsylvania clinton beat rival sen barack obama earning 54.6 percent of the democratic votes while mc cain captured 72.7 percent of the republican's votes according to the pennsylvania department of state's web site in northampton county where lehigh is located obama won 40 percent of the democratic votes and clinton took 60 percent in preparation for tuesday's pri mary several student organizations worked for weeks to promote their candidates and to register students to vote student volunteers in support of obama went around to all the resi dential dorms tuesday to knock on doors and ask students if they were registered to vote and if they had voted yet volunteers also called students to remind them to vote while walking to class students passed over chalk messages and b&w photo by chris knight were offered shuttle rides from grace hall to voting booths mike pankey 10 said he en countered many people asking him if he was a registered voter everywhere i have been in the last week students have been ask ing me if i am registered to vote pankey said i voted in new jersey two months ago so i did not vote in tuesday's primary " lehigh students for obama is a student-run organization that has several goals getting students reg istered to vote mobilizing student democrats and advertising for vol lehigh students vote in electronic voting booths at a south side polling location during the presidential primary tuesday hillary clinton won 60 percent of the northampton county vote barack obama won 40 percent student groups zoellner space not adequate by allyson planders dan halle 08 a fifth-year undergraduate is the musical director of melismatics and a whole step up because he sings with two student a cappella groups he is constantly rehearsing however the groups he practices with often have trouble finding a room to use in zoellner arts center halle said often his groups are only sched uled two hours of practice time a week even though most need at least double the time finding a space is really tough he said halle said rooms have been allocated incor rectly for example one cello player will be practicing in a room that could hold an entire choir renting baker hall for performances is also a problem halle said because the groups can't raise the money required to perform it cost about 1,500 to rent baker hall for the melismatics and echoes to perform but each make less than 200 from the show halle estimated that most groups pay ap proximately 800 to use baker hall for a performance it's way too expensive to go on this way halle said several other student groups on campus said they also feel zoellner is inaccessible and hin ders the growth of their organizations zoellner scheduling manager mount allen acknowledged the demand for use of zoellner facilities has caused scheduling problems people's needs have just grown so fast he said allen said scheduling conflicts arise because the registrar allocates the rooms if the lessons are being taken for credit teachers tell the reg marchers call for an end to sexual assault by meg grant ■annual march addresses violence against women and sexual assault on campus and throughout the u.s students walked through campus advocating awareness for sexual harassment tuesday night in efforts to take back the night starting from look-out point on mountain drive north at 7 p.m students walked down the hill to ward the lower centennial dormitories throughout the walk participants were encour aged to unite and join in chants protesting sexual assault as the march passed by students on the hill and around the mcclintic-marshall dormitory looked on as marchers shouted chants calling for an end to sexual abuse the annual event run by the women's center and co-sponsored by theta chi fraternity is in sup port of those who have survived any form of abuse said michelle issadore assistant director of the women's center we want to show support for survivors and re claim space on campus issadore said upon reaching lower centennials students crowded in a half circle between the stevens and stoughton houses to listen to personal stories of stu dents and organizers as well as statistics about sexual abuse each year the rally concludes in this area in or der to remember jeanne clery a lehigh freshman in 1986 who was raped and murdered in stoughton dormitory event organizers commended the crowd for their support of their peers the organizers made a special point to recognize male participants since most sexual assaults are against women ninety percent of sexual assault survivors are women said chris morrin 08 also one in six women has been assaulted nationally these statistics make it likely that most know someone who has been sexually assaulted morrin said whether they have been told about it or not noelle amos 10 said statistics for college wom en are even higher college women are four times as likely to be as saulted she said morrin said there are simple things everyone can
