in final push before primary clinton makes bethlehem visit by elaine hardenstine as pennsylvanians head to polls tuesday for the primary sen hillary clinton wants voters to think about what type of president they want i'm offering leadership you can count on she said clinton addressed a crowd of le high valley residents many of whom were middle-aged women sunday at liberty high school memorial gym nasium in bethlehem pennsylvania gov ed rendell introduced clinton whose first discus sion was about the u.s.'s lack of fiscal responsibility don't spend money we don't have she said clinton played to her audience of small town americans by discussing the middle class and the tough job market america created and gave life to the middle class she said and it's the middle class that is under stress she said she wants to end tax breaks on exported jobs and to rewrite the tax code so it works for all citizens she said it is not fair that wall street analysts pay a lower percentage on their taxes than truck drivers from bethlehem clinton said investments would help the economy she wants citizens to buy bonds as they did during other wars such as world war 11 clinton who has made a recent push to be environmentally friendly proposed a clean renewable energy bill not only would the bill aim for a greener countryside but it would also provide an estimated five million new jobs she said the country that sent man to the steps building construction delayed a year by jaclyn weissman construction for the new science technol ogy environment policy and society build ing originally planned to begin this summer will not begin until a year from now at the earliest according to administrators anthony corallo associate vice president of facilities services and campus planning said the architectural design process is about 75 percent complete and should be finished by august bohlin cywinski jackson an architectural firm from philadelphia was hired to design the building in february 2007 we're hoping to have a cost on that 75 percent package by the end of may corallo said pending necessary funding corallo antici pates construction to be finished by fall 2011 at the earliest steps will be a certified sustainable build ing and is going to be built on the lawn outside of maginnes hall it will be designed in an l shape along packard avenue and vine street the wing along packer avenue will have a green roof when it does open the steps building will hold classrooms for the college of arts and sciences and the p.c rossin college of engi neering and applied science however the space won't be limited to only those colleges said anne meltzer dean of the arts college and chair of the committee for the steps project it is a building that will really serve the whole campus community meltzer said although the building will be used by many members of lehigh some students are disap sigma alpha mu wins appeal for new trial by gabriela saade â– sigma alpha mv and beta theta pi fraternities both appeal their trials committee rejects beta's appeal in an appeals process last wednesday sigma alpha mv fraternity was granted permission to undergo a new trial while beta theta pi fraternity was denied accord ing to presidents joe rosen 09 and andrew edmonds 09 respectively both fraternities were closed by the administration last month after being found guilty of hazing accord ing to the original sanctions beta can apply to reinstate in 10 years and sammy in four years charge against the fraternities came after two beta theta pi pledges were hospitalized with near-lethal bacs after a pledge event in february and sammy had a rush event where rushees drank alcohol and played drinking games sammy will have another chance to prove its posi tion to the committee of discipline in a new trial since its appeal was successful rosen said we were very pleased we were granted a new trial rosen said we are grateful for all the support we have gotten on campus beta was not granted a new trial edmonds said the fraternity members are very upset about the decision the university sent mixed signals about what they care about edmonds said it was the most incompe tent display of professionalism i've ever seen the fraternity is no longer recognized on campus and is withstanding a 10 year suspension edmonds said in reaction to what happened to sammy edmonds said he didn't believe the university was abiding by its code of conduct if it lessens the sanctions against sammy the code of conduct says any form of hazing that puts someone in as situation should result in a four-year minimum suspension of the organization edmonds said i don't see how that would not be followed i feel like the university isn't following their own code of conduct according to edmonds the brothers of beta will move off-campus next year but will remain active alum ni members through communication with other alumni and weekend reunions the university found beta responsible for hazing be cause alcohol was present he said edmonds said beta theta pi has positively evolved throughout his time at lehigh see steps page 2 see frats page 2 see clinton page 5 not
